i agree and posted about it in response to some of the trade rumors.

feel like if he played for like, the kings, he'd be a trade target, tbh. "young player in a bad situation who might break out here"

one thing i'll be keeping an eye on--simpler than even production--is minutes.

one could argue that vogel played him because he was afraid he'd lose his job if he didn't (same with russ). i don't think ham will have a hot seat in year one, so if he's playing THT, numbers be damned, it means he's seeing something. if he's not, maybe THT really is just the dead weight everyone thinks he is.

i don't think so. he's got legit nba wing size (think sg version of pj tucker), reasonably quick feet on defense, a pretty good handle, decent vision, and some creative finishing ability. his shot doesn't seem unfixable to me, either.

    Lakers sign Jay Huff

Now we have 3 centers plus AD. Guess we're out on Myles Turner.

Well, I think 2 SRPs + THT is more than just a single FRP, I'd equate that in value easily to 2 FRPs. It's not throw-away garbage. I agree the offer is light for Kyrie but any offer would be and this is an unprecedented valuation for a super-star, I can't remember any like this exactly. There is no other suitor for the guy and that package is a whole heck of a lot better than just buying out Kyrie and letting him walk. I seriously doubt they will buy out Westbrook "IF" Durant is gone. They'd play him regardless of how bad a fit he is with Simmons. For now, their stance on Westbrook is to reject him while KD is still a Net. This is the real reason they want to wait for a KD trade. Not to "feel the market and available players" that's BS, no one else wants him and his 36 million.

Yes the order in which you sign contracts matter. As an example in the Philly case where Harden was open to a discount. They negotiated all the contracts with free agents first and then they knew how much of a discount they needed. When it came time to make these contracts official, it was Harden who signed first to open up cap space, followed by the free agents.

So in our situation we’d have the cap holds of 75m for Turner and Lebron, to negotiate with Kyrie for a max, we’d have to get a pretty big discount from Lebron. Then Lebron would have to sign first at about 10m per to actually cancel out his cap hold to open up the cap space for Kyrie.

Maybe, but if Turner comes and we need a roster spot I'm sure they would be willing to cut Huff to make room.

I really like this signing. It gives us interior depth and some flexibility. Out of our four bigs, three are stretch bigs who can play either 4 or 5, with only Jones being locked into the 5 spot.

Yay. We’re big in the front court again and Ham can mix and match strengths against opponents.

Wait …. is he signed signed or just exhibit - 10 signed? Written two ways above.

Don't matter. Roster sucks. LBJ is old. AD is Mr. Glass and the rest of the roster can't shoot.

Huff will likely be G-League material, too.

    Did I mention we suck?

He’s on an exhibit 10, it’s basically just a training camp contract. It gives us the ability to convert him to a 2 way, so that’s something if he isn’t kept on the roster on a regular deal. Doesn’t mean we aren’t interested in Turner, but I am glad to see we didn’t let him go elsewhere.

The problem is not THT. He will have a good career in the league and has an interesting ceiling.
He just doesn't fit with LeBron and if you had Russ he's actually useless
On top of that, he's our biggest asset for what he earns and...the fact that he has good potential. It's how you can improve the team

If we can trade Russ for good assets, there's some scenarios where he can be important if he stays

This is where I’m at too. I don’t think we win a championship with Kyrie next year either. Sure there’s a chance but it’s small. I’d be on board with giving it a shot IF we don’t plan on signing Kyrie to another 4 year contract. The chances of Kyrie not going off the rails for another 4 years is smaller than our chance of winning a championship next year. He has little value right now on the open market, I’d hate to be the team that is trying to get rid of him next summer with 4 years left on his contract. How many picks is that going to take?

Agreed. If we were to do a Russ/2 FRPS for Hield/Turner, I think we could see a big bounce back from THT. With more shooting/spacing, a role as a secondary or even (if LeBron is on the bench) primary ballhandler and no responsibility to be a primary wing stopper like last year, I think he's in a much better place to succeed.

I agree it’s a clunky fit. I’ve seen some post that he’s really not worth much and THAT’S the part I disagree with. He had a bad year but he’s got a lot of room to grow still.

The problem with THT is that he can’t shoot. Your value in the modern NBA drops dramatically if you can’t shoot, because most players can. His inability to shoot, same as with Russ, is what makes him a bad fit with LeBron and AD, so while he COULD be good someday, that will require him to be able to shoot. Until then the defense will sag off him and it will hurt his ability to drive which is his main skill, NBA defenses are smart and exploit your weaknesses in time. If we are trying to win it all now he likely has to go, because he’s one of our only tradable pieces, his contract helps make a deal get done.

I hear that the folks on the promotional side were called in for an important in-person meeting early next week. Rumors are circulating that it is related to restarting the Irving work. If true, it likely means there was a change in sentiment from Harris, since those efforts were paused after BKN reneged on their initial agreement.

Note that this is not a guarantee. As mentioned earlier, a mountain of such work was done in preparation for Leonard in 2019, and we all know how that turned out. However, it definitely signals an update. This could be a number of things, whether it was communication from Irving's camp, BKN reaching out to restart talks, or something related to Durant. I'll see if I can gather more insight.

Exciting stuff everyone! It's been amazing to see the LakersBall community stick things out and keep the optimism strong!!!
