It is on brand for us. We like stars. It's what got us here.

That's our challenge and its a big one. We need to put together a competitive team that gives us a chance to win now with LeBron and AD without completely crippling the future.

well, we WANT to compete now and not kill the future. i don't know if that's really possible. but again, it seems to me that our potential trade partners are almost helping us avoid killing the future by claiming what we have isn't enough. i realize some are doing that to try to get us to give up everything for something that won't help us compete now, but we've resisted that.

don't get me wrong, i'd keep burning up the phone lines, but if i'm rob, i'd call lebron and AD and tell them to make nice with russ, because we're likely starting the season with the guy you two demanded we bring in. make it work this time. and we're not firing ham.

This whole thing's been really tricky for me mentally.

I don't want to completely destroy our future, but I do feel like when have guys as good as AD and LeBron you should try to win with them as we just don't know what the future will hold for the team. Even a diminished LeBron is a top player in the league and replacing him will be tough IMO.

While that certainly slides in the column of being careful of about giving up draft picks, it also makes me feel like this is the last time the championship window will be open for a while. Even though that opening is small, it makes me lean toward trying to win now if we can.

I don't necessarily disagree with the thought that AD and LeBron should be trying to make it work Russ. I just a) honestly don't think they can and b) I think everyone wanted Russ since he's a big name. I think they all patted themselves on the back when that one went through and once it crapped the bed the blame game began. We're still big name hunting so no one has learned anything.

    Loud sigh.

So yeah, I'm all over the place on this.

Ultimately, I still think Russ has got to go though even though I have to concede that there is a very real chance of us digging a bigger future hole to make that happen given the way teams are trying to fleece us.

i think i've just accepted that our lebron window is already closed, and we need to be thinking about the AD window or the post-klutch window, depending upon how lebron reacts to his window being closed here.

the chance of winning a title next year even with irving is just really small, imo. so why be bad for a decade after that?

And then Lebron and Rich Paul get on the phone with Jeanie and tell her to fire Rob and make Rich Paul GM... someone hand me my coffee

i don't think they'd do it, but it would be grounds for shipping them all out, tbh.

You have to try and win this year with a puncher’s chance or the organization has a bunch of wusses running it. Period. :giggle:

They already did that supposedly. AD and Lebron reportedly reached out to Russ on the phone and said they were committed to each other. There were articles stating it.

I think Lebron still wants Russ gone (who doesn’t) but the Lakers and their stars and coach have been at least acting as if Russ is staying this year and that they are ok with it. I hope that doesn’t end up being the case and we are able to move him before the season but we’ll see. If the deals just aren’t there maybe they just give it a try with Russ and then attempt a trade again at the deadline when it inevitably fails to be a fit.

While this is all quite frustrating as fans, it takes two to tango and none of these teams are working with us so far. They are all demanding the unreasonable and hoping for our desperation to give them more bargaining power.

Russ HAS to try to do what’s asked of him or he totally kills his next contract worse than it’s already been killed.

That’s the good thing about the Lakers very public strategy so far. By hiring Ham he has put Russ on notice about how he wants him to play and what is expected of him. I don’t think anyone believes he will actually do it, but the expectations are clear and if Russ doesn’t fit it’s his fault not anyone else’s.

the dismissing of the 2020 title is kind of sad and desperate. i wasn't as into it as i wish i was due to *waves hands*, but it's pretty clear that had any team but the lakers won, it would be a BIG DEAL.

Im surprised at how little value THT has here on this forum. I still think he can be a very good player.

He's been awful offensively but we'll see if he bounces back with the ball in his hands more and with some shooters. (If here, hopefully no Russ)
