This one is a real head scratcher to me. If Reaves wasn’t part of your best 8 rotation then why did we play him so much. I sort of understand franks thinking - I’m a defence first coach and I’m going to play Bradley as the best point of attack defender I have. I just don’t understand freezing out Reaves who is solid on D.
Frank answered that question, he said Reaves has been in a slump, which is true, so he went with guys who have been there before in playoff games. What I don’t agree with is not playing Reaves at all, I’m sure 10 mins could have been found for him. All that said, it’s possible Reaves hit a big rookie wall, his shooting numbers have been very bad in this slump, he’s never played this many games with this many minutes, against players so strong, it was probably inevitable that he’d tire out at this point.
His shooting hasn’t been there, but his playmaking has been great recently and he has been solid on D. So I’m not sure I really buy the slump reasoning by frank. Frank tried to revert back to his defensive game plan starting Dwight and Bradley. But both aren’t what they use to be in 2020 and you’ve got Westbrook and Lebron who play little defence on their good days. This is one of my biggest gripes with Vogel, he clearly can’t adjust to his players.
It’s “defense,” not “defence.” I agree that Vogel has real issues with adjusting to his players. That being said, he wasn’t given many good players to work with this season.
this is a fair criticism of vogel: he can't just win with anyone. though i'm not sure i know of many coaches who can. i actually think he's more versatile than d'antoni, for example, who bends every roster to his will. he was ironically both the beginning and end of phx. at the front end, he made them more than the sum of their parts, but he couldn't figure out how to use joe johnson (who was perennial two-way allstar wing with size--a plug and play anywhere) and eventually even had trouble with stoudemire because he wasn't a long-range shooter. anyway, no, vogel wants to defend and defend a certain way, and we no longer had the parts to do it. my issue is that we could have gotten those parts and been more competitive. lebron and AD can play any kind of system on either end. canadian/british english has different spellings. i think svtzr may be swedish (?) and might have learned the queen's english.
LOL, ok! Abeer is spot on, I learnt the Queen’s English and she has a preference for S over C’s. What can I tell ya, languages are strange things.
This is a great point. There hasn’t really been a tonne of coaches who can adjust. I’ve seen Pop do it successfully with teams built for D initially and then moved to a dominant O in Duncan’s later years. I’ve seen Spo do it as well. Maybe like a handful have the ability. So I can’t play Vogel too much, but I do think his inability to adjust to this roster has cost us.
right; the list of coaches who have won playing dramatically different styles is short. i'd say carlisle won in different ways in dallas, too. but jerry sloan didn't in utah. i wouldn't put vogel in the d'antoni group, though--wherein you have to completely overhaul the roster to fit his needs, and he has trouble using very good players who don't do exactly the thing the system wants. to me, vogel can win if you give him guys who want to defend. that shouldn't be THAT tall of an order. but the FO (and the fans) freaked out over the 3pt shooting so much that we just loaded up on that to the detriment of the defense. we gave vogel a dantoni team, and not even an optimal one. give dantoni a vogel team, and he does even worse, imo. probably quits, lol. anyway, having a coach play the gm is generally bad, but so is basically not considering the coach when you make player personnel moves.
Suddenly benching Reaves was the thing that actually made me consider Vogel's in deep with the Mob. Hell: this team is sooo bad you find yourself actually thinking such things. You grasp desperately for answers. Which reminds me: However many points Vegas is giving the Lakers against the Suns, take the Suns. I haven't looked. It could be 35. Still: take the Suns. In around 9 hours as I type this, the Lakers will be put out of their misery. To quote Roy Orbison, "Mercyyyyyy."
season DONE AD can rest now since hes been so reliable all season gota make sure he can go into somewhat "regular" off season
nah, i'd rather miss the playoffs altogether than go through the heartbreak of losing in the finals like in 04 and 08
