On offense yes but on defense a different story.

Would rather have Cory Joseph and Gary Harris: that's actually an NBA talent level backcourt on offense and defense (not good NBA talent but these are two legit NBA players)

Gary Harris and Tristan Thompson would be my choice of potential buyout candidates (assuming we waive Bazemore and DJ).

But I have the feeling that the “Lakers shifting their focus to the buyout market” was just a PR thing to spin our lack of movement at the trade deadline.

Once the buyout market emerges, I think it will again shift to “There were no buyout candidates that we thought would improve the team, and we’re happy with our current roster”.

Not saying I agree with it, but I just don’t see ownership eating the money associated with cutting Bazemore/DJ, for marginal players in a season that’s essentially already lost.

And if they do… that’ll just make me more upset that they got cheap with Caruso.

No it isn’t, for me he isn’t some kind of savant manager that is leagues above everyone else. However I do have to give him credit for his ability to sign free agents and make big trades. He is certainly very active, whether that’s a good thing or not is debatable regarding continuity.

I thought this deal for Ben Simmons was a great outcome. Especially when people were using him as a punching bag for keeping Ben and not trading him for a package centered around CJ (this was terrible in my opinion). He got his guy.

    Agreed.
If they pay additional tax to add players other teams just dumped, in order to maybe win an extra game or two, our FO is much dumber than I thought. If we were actually in the mix to go all the way, then sure.

I’m in the camp that Morey is over rated.
Yeah, he’s made moves, but his favorite player is a stat stuffing, flopping, team destroying, selfish, win nothing loser of a player.

This is a really interesting trade for both sides.

Philly effectively had a free asset that wasn’t contributing on the court. So from the point of view of playing time and performance, they traded Curry and Drummond from their rotation for Harden. So we can assume they’ve gotten a whole lot better. The additional cost was Ben Simmons and two firsts - but we all know they’re in win now mode with Embiid’s health. So this makes perfect sense for them.

From the point of view of not letting your assets go to waste. Brooklyn did great. They traded Harden who was probably going to walk for nothing, for Simmons who can be their Draymond Green, a backup C and Seth who is a dead eye shooter plus two firsts. Great hall. But even better than that, they seem much more balanced, they have 3 legitimate shooters now in Curry, Mills, Harris to add to the Irving and Durant duo. They added a Swiss Army knife DPOY candidate who is a great play maker in Ben Simmons and should let him run the show and just set up all their shooters.

This is one of those rare trades that makes sense for both franchises. A lot is going to depend on whether Harden is declining or just not trying and whether Simmons and Irving are one too many head cases to be successful.

what are the things--besides the harden trade--that morey pulled that any warm body in a suit in the same context couldn't have? i just think his story is a triumph of narrative over substance.

and it was built on his manufactured credibility. gms that didn't have a devoted media/fan following would have been under much more pressure to make a deal than he was. again, his narrative created a context that others don't have.

he's a brilliant storyteller and an average manager at best.

Looking at teams we've talked to who want to come off bad money this summer, I think we should talk to Indy again but expand the deal to include Russ. I know it'll be really difficult for Rob not to make this a Buddy centered deal, but I don't want him at all. Instead, I target Turner (he's my golden goose at this point) and rumor is they'll look to come off Brogdon's deal, see if a bundle of expirings moves the needle for them.

Offer something to the tune of Russ, THT, Nunn, 2 1st round picks and the 2 Wiz picks for Turner and Brogdon.

They may very well say no and can get more if they move them separately but coming off $40m in salary, getting all expiring deals, plus picks (our unknown + Wiz sucking) isn't exactly an easy thing to do and both have some injury concerns that should prevent them from pricing us out of the conversation.

we need to wait patiently and pounce when mitchell gets out of there. same with luka situation. hang onto future assets, try to conjure up a couple more in the next two years.

honestly, i don't see indy doing jsm's deal, but that would accomplish some things despite losing picks. two useful nba players for one that's not very useful.

I'm not counting on it. I think a Knicks deal is more likely as they have more bad contracts there and are also in the dumpster fire boat with us. But this deadline showed me the market isn't as brutal as I thought or as the teams were making it seem in their media leaks. Considering you're paying a premium at the deadline too because of desperation, unless a dumb team completely resets the market this summer, I think we could have a shot at options like the Indy one.

We had the assets to be in the Turner discussion at the deadline (maybe a sweetener here or there) but after they moved Sabonis they shut everything down on the Turner front and most teams didn't want to deal for an injured Turner anyway. So then it's just a matter of do they think an expiring Russ, a 1st, 2 early 2nds, and wiping Brogdon's contract off the books is enough for part 2 of the deal. I think they would look to buy Russ out too, so they're not even on the hook for his full salary next year. That might not get us there, but I don't think we'd be far off if it didn't. These are the type of moves I want to see Rob trying. Instead of bringing DS back in or harassing Hield. Can he put a restraining order on Rob?... please.

Brogdon does get hurt. He was out earlier this year for an achilles issue.

I know his game pretty well. He's the archetype we need, and I have been begging for on this roster.

The biggest issue to deal with is Monk: if we can lock him up for next season, then I feel okay moving forward with: Johnson, Reaves, THT, LBJ, AD, and Nunn (if healthy).

Russ (want him gone) but if he's back, he has to take on a bench role. Period.

We have our 27th pick and some second rounders along with THT to use as assets.

I feel optimistic moving into the summer.

    I've written this season off.

Neither Jazz or Mavs will deal with us. These petty bastards will take a worse deal over helping us get another star.
    Just saying...

Yeah. The guy who torpedoed their super team (as originally constructed ... may wind up better now) .... speaks. And talks with the "We" tone as if he speaks for the team and organization. That said, yeah who couldn't see that coming and we'll see how it goes with the Beard and Embiid.
