That’s a touchy subject, I dated a wonderful girl once with bipolar and she had high highs and low lows that felt like two completely different people. The differing ideas she came up with during each extreme were really jarring.

In Kyrie’s case, it’s always a shame to watch talent blow itself up like this. The ignorance and lack of perspective in how privileged he is compared to the 99.99% of people on this planet while still crying wolf about being mistreated is frankly frustrating. You’re getting paid tens of millions to play a game, it’s disrespectful to infer that that is a form of slavery when millions dream of a fraction of what he has been blessed with.

Edit: sorry, I said millions dream of it. More like billions.

Damn right, and it’s not making excuses if it’s true. And if so, it certainly is an explanation for his bizarre behavior. In addition, it wouldn’t be unrealistic, given his swings, that he goes through periods of not taking his meds.

Nick Wright is a (bleep) (bleep). (Bleep) him and the long faced horse he rode in on.

So... Ariza's hurt. Can we hop on Ennis's twitter/instagram again, see what he's up to?

Also, what is Wes doing these days?

i come from a family in which bipolar runs, and i'm a psychologist. it's no joke. and kyrie's behavior isn't shocking when viewed through that lens.

it's just unusual to see someone so successful dealing with it, so it's really stark. but it's not different from folks who, say, leave stable employment and their family to live in wyoming for no (ostensibly) good reason.

as a basketball fan: glad it's not my problem.

as a person/psychologist: that's too bad. as svtzr said, so many would love to have your choices.

    On a serious note:
I hope some day that Kyrie gets the help that he very clearly needs. You know, like learning that the world is round and doesn’t revolve around him.

    On a lighter note:
Thank God we never signed him. Can’t imagine what KD and Harden are thinking.

Didn’t know you were a psych. I absolutely loved my psyscolinguistics and bio-psych classes I took in grad school. Fascinating.

If Kyrie is indeed bipolar, and say he’s at a low point: does he have control of his ability to even appreciate all the choices and opportunities at his disposal? And is it safe to say a person who is bi polar is more prone to suffer from depression as well? If it’s the case, it wouldn’t be realistic to expect him to appreciate all the good things in life, would it? And it’s possible he posts the weird stuff when he’s at his low points, so this complicates things.

Is there actual real discussion about Kyrie being bipolar?? Does he have a mental disability or are some of us just in-house diagnosing his behavior? I have not read anything on him about it, so I really don't know if there is actual substance to this discussion.

The Lakers should take a look at picking up Sekou Doumbouya off waivers.

The kid was drafted in the first round only 2 seasons ago, is 21 years older and similar to THT showed flashes of potentially being a very good role player in the league.

He could give this Lakers team some youth while also filling a need of having a body capable of playing SF/PF.

He’s also a better player than anyone else available in either free agency or the G-League that the Lakers can pick up right now too.

Everyone has an "ailment" for every excuse. Some people are just aholes. But even that is subjective.

From what others have read or are aware of apparently it’s been out there he is. Maybe someone can clarify what’s known from where.

I agree. He checks a lot of boxes. I remember proposing a Kuzma trade to Detroit in exchange for Sekou and people were saying that Detroit would not do that deal. So, I guess he has really dropeed off or something. But, he checks a lot of boxes in terms of age, a big defensive wing with length, and athleticism.

full disclosure: my phd is in personality/social psych, not clinical, but i spent a lot of time in a clinically-oriented research lab in grad school.

depressive episodes are part of bipolar disorder, so no, not at all unexpected. i think it was slick that said he read somewhere that kyrie had that diagnosis. i honestly wouldn't have guessed it based on public behavior. a lot of time you notice the manic episodes (think leon smith or delonte west, who were both pretty obviously suffering from bipolar disorder), as they can result in destructive (self and other) behavior. but he could have hypomania and really infrequent episodes or something.

anyway, i don't know if that's what's going on with him, but he clearly doesn't operate under the same reinforcement contingencies as most people, which can lead to personal and occupational dysfunction. as go the old jokes/sayings, when you're rich, people can overlook a lot of things because they don't carry the same consequences. imagine kyrie works at best buy and does some of the stuff he's done (random two-week personal breaks, etc.). pretty quickly, he's homeless and/or in trouble with the law, which exacerbates the condition.

I don't think Kyrie has ever publicly acknowledged the situation like Kevin Love did. There are a few articles out there on the subject. The mood swing stuff has been going around for a minute. All the way back to the Cav's championship run.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.si...ng-mood-swings-story-covered-is-disappointing

I have to find it.. but it was Stephen A Smith commentary..either twitter or podcast where he gave the old " my sources tell me" Kyrie is on medication for this bipolar situation.
Around the same time he posted this

There is some other stuff from Richard Jefferson out there on video too. Jackie created a storm with her ESPN piece. but she and he have a bit of history with that "owned" by the teams stuff. The Kyrie mental state story has created a lot of chatter for the last couple of years. Again Kyrie has never publicly acknowledged it.

yeah, people appropriate the "bipolar" tag to cover just moodiness, but...it's not that. real bipolar disorder is much more like schizophrenia in terms of its properties (e.g., likely genetic predisposition, resistance to standard/softer behavioral interventions) than that. i won't comment further out a fear that i'm getting out of my depth.

ok...a little more irresponsible theorizing: kyrie always struck me as a borderline personality or something more along those lines. i'm going to be surprised if he's caught with a violin case full of guns at 4am on a wednesday in grand rapids, but not at all shocked that say, he stopped talking to his sister because of a dispute over the saltiness of gravy or something.

both can create serious problems for people, but only one can go relatively undetected/have few serious life implications (provided you're rich).

This is a really good take. I’d take a flyer on him as well. We have enough veteran presence guys. I’d love to get some youthful athleticism in the frontcourt.
