The reason why we need pressure is simple. Across life, whether its grades, fitness, relationships or money - its far easier to achieve success once than to keep achieving it consistently. That's why Warren Buffet always says making money is easy, keeping it is the hard thing. We only have to look back to the years before Lebron chose to come here. We were in the wilderness as a bottom feeder for 6 years, there was a season where we only won 17 games and a 4 year stretch where we averaged 21 wins a season. That kind of performance over a sustained period of time harms a team, the amount of fans they have and their financials. And we didn't really have a way out of that - it could of easily been a 10 year period with no playoffs but Lebron saved us. Imagine a ten year stretch where we sucked and how many young kids growing up would of been rooting for the Clippers in the playoffs while we were having 22/60 seasons. Indirectly it does. When you own your own facility like they will (and the Warriors do), they'll be much more profitable than we are. Over time, that leads to more spending power and the ability to retain players, the ability go into the tax for winners, the ability to build the best facilities and spending a huge amount of money marketing to build your fanbase. These aren't the clippers of yesteryear. They've turned a corner under Ballmer, that's what happens when you have a 100 billion net worth owner I suppose. They lost Chris Paul & Blake Griffin and retooled in two years with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Ballmer will continue to keep his wage bill high - sometimes he'll overpay for good but not great players on short term contracts to have the ability to trade for disgruntled stars. The good players will allow them to continuously make the playoffs, and every so often he'll swing aggressively for the fences to trade for a Carmelo, Howard, Davis, Leonard, George, Simmons or Lillard. Same with the GSW. It's this continued level of excellence - in making the playoffs year in year out that develops a team and puts butts in seats. And I expect the GSW and Clippers to do that over the next 10-15 years consistently. To me it's clear that we can't compete with them financially (we don't have rich owners and we don't have our own stadium), so we have to compete with them in being the best in class in everything else.
I also want to make the point that I don't consider them a threat (or the rise of GSW recently), but I think it's stupid to laugh at and ignore competition. That's how Kodak, Nokia and Blockbuster etc got to where they got too. We have to make sure we're leading the pack, not resting on our laurels. And I don't mean in results - because they are the lagging indicator of years of hard work and building. I mean in all the little blocks that make up success, from facilities and staff to technology and big data.
I agree that the state of the art facility will help them with profitability whether through game or concert ticket sales. That doesn’t correlate to me being threatened by the Clippers. By Ballmer talking crap about other teams without being asked, that show me, he’s the one that is insecure.
which parts of staples exactly are you referring to? hard to believe that building is already 22 years old. haven't been there since before the pandemic, but it still felt like a state of the art facility to me all these years later
Dodger Stadium is pretty A Lot older and still beautiful. Updates can go a long way when they’re needed in specific areas, but am curious too when looking at the interior seating and playing area and luxury boxes at Staples …. what are things that would improve on that experience and look?
Where did our “Link needed” gif go? And what else would we expect if this is true from an owner that has a vulture for a mascot and acts the way he does in highly visible public life.
Edit .... seriously where did the "LINK?" gif go (with the Eagle most recently) that's seriously needed? Can't even find it now in the gargantuan Lakergifs library. Who's going to be our ridiculous looking, wiggling Gif Boy this year? Here's a bunch of renderings from a search, but which one did you see, @Khmrp? artist rendition new Clippers arena
yea those are it i saw one with sofi in the picture n didn't like but these other rendering looks better n fits with sofi futuristic look
Oh Jesus. The buffoon has dropped another one. https://news.yahoo.com/column-clippers-owner-steve-ballmer-103013025.html
again, is it professional for the author of the article to trash talk the lakers? are we really crowing about almost making the finals? in what way are they rigged for the future? a new arena? that's going to draw the next round of FAs? because their management in general hasn't blown me away, and they have no young talent nor much flexibility (despite claims to that). honestly, i think leonard was the first and last superstar to choose the clippers. i'm sure ballmer is sure i'm wrong, but i'm not certain what's transpired to change that.
Coming for Laker fans? We’re trying to win championships while you’re trying to be relevant in a city that has you pegged at what 8th on the sports team totem pole. But yeah, Plashcke has been a Laker hater forever, surprised it took him this long to get on Balmers payroll
