Zero sympathy for Reddick. He signed for relatively big money on a young NO team, what did he think was going to happen. He could have signed on the Lakers, Clippers, stayed in Philly, etc for a little less to win, but he chose what he chose. You also have to know if you’re him that Mark Cuban is always watching.

How about if you just can't have buyouts at all. You have to pay the player in full and keep that player on your team. You signed the contract, it is up to you to full fill it. You can't dump the player because you no longer want him, either you trade him or you keep him. Scroooo these guys, they want it both ways.

yep. i think he's saying griffin told him he wouldn't trade him to a non-NE team, and griffin went back on it. i get that fans of the lakers don't care about it. but players and agents should and will.

this is a very reasonable take. though again, we can't know exactly what was said. what we know is that redick said he lied, and griffin hasn't actually even said he didn't.

i've wanted rhj for 2 years now, but since everyone's passed on him multiple times, i guess i'll accept i was wrong.

I think the confusion stems from Redick thinking it was going to be a buyout situation whereas Griffin was referring to a trade instead. No Northeast NBA teams were offering much for Redick so Griffin couldn't get him to those teams. I think Griffin felt that since Redick's minutes were down and he wasn't going to be on a playoffs contender, trading him to Dallas made a lot more sense for Redick. I can understand why Redick is upset but it seems to be more of a miscommunication than anything. Griffin seems to be very professional unlike the previous Pelicans GM Dell Demps who was a total douche. I don't think that AD trade works out if Griffin wasn't the GM and he was also Cavs GM for some time during LeBron's 2nd run.

    This is his exact quote.

"Griff basically says to me, 'Come down for a month. If you still want to be traded, I give you my word, I'll get you to a situation that you like.' We had four subsequent conversations," Redick said. "Again, my agent talked to them. But I'm talking to Griff directly. Griff and I had a personal relationship. Obviously, he did not honor his word."

I find it doubtful that four subsequent, and direct conversations between 2 intellectual adults will lead to a miscommunication. Griffin knew exactly what Reddick wanted. He gave him his word and did not follow through. Again, that's all there is to this mini drama.

And these are Griffin's exact words:

When asked about the trade last week, Griffin said the front office tried to trade Redick to be closer to his family, but ultimately was unable to execute a move.

"We did spend a great deal of time trying to put JJ closer to home," Griffin said Friday. "When it became clear that the teams that were in the best position regionally for him were not necessarily the most aggressive in landing him, we did have conversations about the importance of immediately contending, as he's aging.

"I think we felt confident that JJ welcomed the better contending opportunity because we're not even at the play-in at this point. We felt it was the right thing to do for him and his family."

So the miscommunication comes from JJ thinking it was going to be a buyout but Griffin's proposition was to trade Redick to a northeast NBA team as long as the offers were available. Since there weren't any offers, he took the best one he got.

Again, neither of us know any more than what JJ and Griffin has said thus far but it seems to me that it's more of a miscommunication and Redick became upset at the heat of the moment.

Only a week to add a player. Lance Dance? Will AB be available? I think we need another ball handler. Teams press Alex and THT.

Not once did Reddick or Griffin mention a buy out in their transcripts, so you could throw miscommunication out the window.

Griffin assumed that a contender would be the next best thing to a northeast team, but Reddick never asked for that. It was clear between those two that Reddick wanted to be close to his family. Griffin may have done his due diligence in trying to accommodate, but he chose to ship him out west. It was undoubtedly the right move as a team GM, but on a personal level, he did not honor his word.

I'm not sure what you are reading.

Griffin said he spoke with Redick about joining a contender... It's all on the article. What we know is that Redick wanted the Northeast but weak offers from Northeast teams made it unreasonable for Griffin so he took an offer that would better suit Redick while making sense for the Pelicans. Who knows what their discussions were outside of what was mentioned? Maybe Redick was also upset about his playing time and how he didn't like his new role and that played into Griffin stating that Dallas was a better spot for him than the Pelicans for Redick... who will now have a chance to play in the playoffs in a better-suited role. Either way, for Redick to assume that the Pelicans intentionally did him wrong is his point of view while Griffin has his own POV. It's a miscommunication that Redick is sour about because he really wanted to be back with his family.

Here is the conversation about them talking about Redick being on a contending team:

"we did have conversations about the importance of immediately contending"

So maybe once they moved past the unlikeliness of Redick being on a Northeast NBA team, they considered the next likeliest scenario of Redick being on a contender.

Why do you think "we" means Griffin and Reddick? Reading that transcript it's quite obvious he's referring to the Pelicans personnel. They had conversations among themselves, making self-serving assumptions that would benefit their team only, all while justifying their decision as if Reddick would prefer a contender. He did not. He wanted to stay close to his family. That's been his request since November.

In fact, the latter half of his quote reveals all you need to know.

"I think we felt confident that JJ welcomed the better contending opportunity because we're not even at the play-in at this point. We felt it was the right thing to do for him and his family."

That's a lot of thinking and feeling for a man that supposedly communicated with Reddick about joining a contender. (he didn't) To me that sounds exactly like a man making excuses for why he chose not to honor his word.

This isn't even an important subject so I don't really want to push this further.

"Redick said he was under the impression that he would be bought out of his contract after not getting traded at the deadline, when he could then sign with the Nets. He said he will still join the Mavericks once he finishes rehabbing his injured knee, which he's doing in New York away from the team."

Redick thought he was going to get bought out when Griffin never implied as such.

This seems to be more of a playing issue than anything because if being next to his family was the biggest issue, no amount of playing time would have mattered for Redick. So obviously Redick was also unhappy with his role on the team which he had stated in the podcast.

As for the 'we', like I said, we're only reading paragraphed summaries of what happened. It's foolish to assume they didn't have discussions that went over the possible scenarios of Redick being on a contender since he wasn't playing for anything in the Pelicans considering their regular season seeding at this point. I'm sure Redick preferred playing on a contender rather than the Pelicans so that might have been discussed and Griffin sent him to a team that had a chance to make the playoffs and Redick would actually have a role there.

Honor his word? He said he was open to trading him to those Northeast teams but that the offers weren't appealing... He did his part. The other teams didn't want to make a trade that made sense. What was Griffin supposed to do at that point? Accept a bad trade and have players on the team roster who are locked in on bad contracts? C'mon, JJ has to be smarter than that. Griffin did his best and that's more than what most GM's would do. For JJ to come out and bash a GM who willingly did try to help him is pretty lame. Griffin doesn't owe JJ anything. The fact he would even offer it to JJ is in itself impressive.

    Agreed, this discussion is meaningless.

My point is that you shouldn't make empty promises, no matter the circumstance. That's why I rarely promise my employees anything. I make commitments, not promises that I can't keep. In the event that I can't keep my promise, I apologize and explain why. That's what a decent human being does, at least in my book.

tada's reading comprehension was on point:

griffin's careful phrasing supports jj's account: he knew what jj wanted, now he's trying to justify why he didn't do that.

what should he have done? not told him he'd get him where he wanted to go. after doing that dumb thing, he should have agreed to a buyout like everyone else does. pretty simple. he made his bed by telling redick he'd do right by him. had he been more honest from the beginning, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

    THT
    KCP
    Bron
    AD
    Trez

    With Kief and McLemore.

Doesn’t smell right. I knew Rich Paul would not let Rob trade Trez, KCP, Kief and/or THT.

May have limited his ability to move Dennis. Like a Dennis, KCP, Trez, THT and McKinnie for Lowry and Powell. Too many Klutch guys would have been mad about being shipped to Canada. Lol

But I think they'll wait til the playoff deadline to sign somebody. Most likely waiting to see if OPJ getting bought out.

Not a fan of Ben... Below average defender and he's basically going to be a Wesley+KCP type player. Lakers need a big wing 3/D player. If Ben's shot isn't falling, he's a huge liability out there.
