eh, we'll see. i'm not sure that at full strength we need drummond more than we need marc. we only need one assuming everyone is healthy, and i tend to go with high iq players with size who have won big.

again, long term, if we can keep drummond, it makes sense to do all this. but if we lose gasol (mentally) this year and drummond and gasol next year due to this decision, it's pretty bad, tbh.

It would have made sense and am sure noted by Marc too, to have subbed in Marc when AD2 went down rather than asking Harrell to play with the Freak and Lopez both in there. As if he had a better chance to handle their size. IMO he probably felt pretty disrespected at that point and don’t blame him. Finally gets called on in 4th quarter, 2nd game back from serious bout with COVID and promptly made 5 or 6 meaningful plays. I think that was a WTF handling of the situation from Frank.

The business side of basketball can hurt feelings sometimes. But if it is solid decision making, it’s hard to argue with later. Literally nobody can say we didn’t score big time by landing Drummond from a buyout.

these situations have a way of working themselves out.

tor did the same thing to Marc during last yrs playoffs where he was abysmal in the bos series, he shouldn't be upset or surprised with the current situation

again, it isn't about starting/not starting, etc. it's about how the whole situation has been handled from the beginning--which we don't know now.

i think i related it to the redick thing in NO: that is a problem for that team.

sure, the casual observer just says: redick's cooked and can't play and they needed to move on. they couldn't get offers from teams he liked, so they took the best one and moved on. great. until redick and his agent tell other players and agents that david griffin promised him he wouldn't be moved in a deal like that, then turned around and did.

our brand is about being a destination of choice, and rob has gone a long way towards restoring that. let's hope this isn't a backslide.

Why are we even having this conversation? Has there been an indication that this is causing a problem? Has some TV sports writer said something about it?

things change, maybe Vogel didn't convey msg correctly and or forgot bout Marc during the course of the gm. Marc shat on the organization the last time he was a fa by not evening giving mgmt time of day, winning cures all, are we suppose to worry about everyone hurt feelings? Wes n Kieff were having similar issues earlier in the season so how come you n others weren't worried bout our rep with those guys?

I’m not going to get into the whole who promised what to whom but I have a problem with JJ asking to get traded back East in the first place. He went for the money from New Orleans and then it was HIS choice whether to move his family or not to NO. He choose NOT to. So he signed a contract for 2 years knowing he wouldn’t be living with his family and when it’s time to get traded, suddenly that’s the most important thing. It wasn’t that important when he signed the contract or he would have moved them closer or he could have easily took vets minimum and played for any team of his choosing. Again I’m not talking about whether he got promised something or not from the GM of New Orleans. My problem is that he’s saying that he should get traded to his choice team/general location because of his family and he was fine living apart from them when he signed the contract or he could have moved them.

that was my initial reaction, but focusing on just that is avoiding the main point--if people trust redick more than griffin, this will be a problem. if redick's agent has any pull in important places, this will be a problem. griffin could have chosen to say nothing or tell the truth, but he lied (unless you're arguing redick is lying about him lying, which i doubt, tbh).

i've thought about it, and i can't really see the sensible change to the buyout market. i guess you could limit teams like they did with the BAE: you can't pick up a buyout in consecutive years or something...but i don't think the players go for that, for several reasons. plus, as the article outlines: teams aren't really using it disproportionately nor benefitting tremendously.

also, it may actually be in the league's best interest for the bottom feeders to help feed the playoff arms race. i don't see why it should change soon.

Like I said, I’m not talking about what Griffin said or didn’t. If I was GM I would have told JJ the same thing I said above and tell him I was trading him to whatever team gave me the best deal. Players need to take into account their families when they sign a contract. This isn’t a case like Fisher were his daughter got sick and he asked to move back to LA for medical care. JJ went into this contract knowing he was signing for 2 years to play for NO. If he wasn’t ok with his family living in Brooklyn he shouldn’t have signed on.

The 'location' area for buyout candidates is a total joke. Two things being equal, of course they take the better location. But most buyout candidates go to the team that is a title contender which this year, happens to be the Lakers and Nets. I didn't hear about these people complaining about buyout candidates when Cleveland had the most buyout candidates when LeBron was on that team or when the Bucks were rumored to have the most buyout interest last and the other previous season. These players are only going to be with the team for just a few months so it's not a location issue - it's them joining the champ contenders.

I agree. Reddick could have easily relocated his family to New Orleans and rented a place... He certainly earns more than enough money to do so. My guess is Griffin wanted to work with JJ on a buy-out but JJ assumed that meant he was guaranteed a buy-out. In either case, JJ isn't some GOAT player for that franchise... he doesn't dictate what the team should do. Plenty of players are going through the same situation and some have had deaths in their family due to COVID... who does JJ think he is with this sob story lol

I'm not sure I agree with you guys about the Reddick situation. Yes, his expectations may have been naive, but Griffin promised he would get moved to a preferable destination. As they say, a man is only as good as his word, and that's all there is to it.

    https://www.si.com/nba/2021/04/01/jj-redick-critical-david-griffin-pelicans-mavericks-trade

I didn’t listen to JJ’s podcast, but from this article he says Griffin told him he’d try to trade him to a “preferable destination”. Well, I think Dallas fits that bill, they’re definitely closer to contention than the Pelicans.

Seems like there was some miscommunication there and JJ having unrealistic expectations. Unless Griffin specifically told him that they’d send him to Brooklyn, I don’t think New Orleans did anything wrong here. And I don’t think this is going to necessarily lead to bad optics for the Pelicans front office. They had a segment on The Jump about this, and both RJ and Horry were ripping JJ for whining about this.

But tying back to Marc, yeah the only way he’d be justified in being upset is if he turned down higher offers because we promised him he’d be the full time starter.

I don’t think we know that ... but it does seem plausible considering the hoops we jumped through to acquire him (we had to trade McGee and a second rounder, take on McKinnie’s contract, and give Marc a two year deal).

But I also think we’re making a mountain out of a molehill of Marc not doing media availability. I’m sure he’s fine with the situation and just doesn’t feel like talking, maybe even just not feeling up to it after the Covid recovery. Then someone manufactured the BS buyout rumors for clickbait and threw gas on the fire.
