I'm halfway thru Queen's Gambit, big fan of chess grandmasters when I was little until Kasparov got beat by the computer:Vogelheaving:
Most annoying thing in that video is seeing Boron's fugly mug not standing up for the Lakers. Because of his Magic affiliation. Disgraceful.
i feel like magic had a role in getting lebron, but after that, i wonder how much better off we'd be right now had he just never been part of things. those trades were just awful, and while they didn't end up costing us much (we won the title), we didn't have to hamstring ourselves by unloading potentially useful young players on rookie scale contracts for literally nothing. we now have enough data to know that rob was behind the good stuff and magic was behind a lot of the stupid stuff--including the press leaks. really annoying.
in fairness, most people aren't asked to do all 5 (or don't ask to do all 5). so some of that is on the busses for trying to incorporate him in all ways. what percentage of great coaches and managers were great nba players? jerry west and...bill russell when he was player/coach?
It seems that former superstars are either bad at coaching or burn out pretty quickly. Jerry West couldn't wait to get away from coaching. I think most superstars are megalomaniac basketball savants that run out of patience with mere mortals that don't get it like they do.
right. it's confounded with the fact that they're rich enough not to need to work anymore in most cases, but a lot of them haven't done well when they tried, either. the superstars have abilities that others don't, and it's hard to become a master strategist from that vantage point. jason kidd can't be in your head telling you that a guy is about to break open and that the angle will be created if you give a brief shoulder fake and extend your right foot. but scott brooks had catalog this s*** for a decade so he could stay on a roster.
But also excellent business owner apparently. Maybe they cancel each other out, but the key thing is that he is just a cheerleader and fan now. And occasionally an ambassador. But he doesn't need any official role any longer.
Dumping Green is looking like a genius move right now (whopping 1-6 from the field and -27 +/- in a game they won!) Losing Dwight/picking up Harell I'm still not sure about. Dwight again looking good in the backup C role.
