Considering how much the upper-tier role players like Bogdonavic/Gallinari are getting paid ($20M per), I think the lower-tier stars are worth the max.

So when you evaluate their salaries from the bottom-up, the Lebron/AD tier superstars are an incredible bargain, because they would actually be worth at least 50% of the cap.

I've always wondered what prime, 2010 free agent LeBron would get with no cap.

If SuperMax + chump change amounted to that, then yep, probably.

That's an interesting question. 5 years 500 million might not be far fetched. Question is, which team would have paid that? I know Mickey down in Miami is a billionaire but would he have paid that? Lakers are a family business, I do not think they could afford that. New York Knicks? I dont know. Clippers, with Balmer, I think he would do that for sure.

Even with that much money, the Knicks wouldn't be able to get the deal done TIC :)

Random question. Is Bron actually as close to CP3 and Melo as everybody says? It doesn't seem like he was interested in getting either of them to the Lakers.

LeBron would recruit CP3 if he could. CP3's contract makes it impossible.

Lebron wants to win championships AND have the ball in his hands the most.

That makes some moves near impossible even beyond the financial part

yay for our draft team! Can't keep them all, but happy they have all experienced success.

agree on 2nd part, but not on 1st. if i couldn't get a top-tier star, i'd be very judicious with the max, in particular. you mention bogdan and gallo, but they're making half what the max will be for fewer years. also, we don't know yet how happy atlanta will be that they did that. the max has become an artificial starting point for rookie extension negotiations, with teams being too afraid of guys walking to think about whether they want to tie themselves to someone who clearly isn't going to lead them to the top of the mountain.

morey's only successes in houston (trading for harden and paul) both involved hitting a lot of draft/contract singles, then aggregating for someone that he wouldn't have been able to sign outright.

and i think sac is instructive here, as overpaying their lotto pick led them to a) be fearful of overpaying bogdan and b) lose him for nothing. had they moved heild for useful vets, they'd have kept bogdan at a lower dollar amount (but similar or better impact) and might have another useful player or two.

anyway, i guess i'm saying sentient's repeated point was correct, just as applied to his favorite player as opposed to AD: three useful role players is worth more than a non-superstar max. 10 useful role players is worth less than a real superstar max. only max real stars. otherwise try to compete with ensemble casts.

case in point. add up all those salaries and then project that team's success in the western conference.

If I'm doing the math correctly....$92M between those 4 players? That leaves you with about $17M to fill out the rest of the roster...does that team make the playoffs? Maybe...depends on the supporting players I suppose. But the fact that it's a maybe tells you everything about what you should or shouldn't do and where the money should be going...

Out of that group, not sure any of them are superstars. BI is an all star, DAR is one too (but borderline going forward)...clarkson/randle are going to have nice long NBA careers but neither will ever be an all star....

How many people are on the roster? 12? I'm guessing Jared is coming back - essentially, 1 spot left.

    We need another big man.

I think the Lakers think they have enough size on the wing and enough ball handling with a combination of guards and wings on our roster..

    Go big.
