So the Lakers got a load of zone tonight and they go and set an NBA record for 3's in a Finals.

This team is destined to ride the purple-n-gold con-trail left by KB8-24 to a championship and beyond !!

Placing James in the middle of their zone defense manufactured some points with timely scoring dimes to Davis or his own. Miami will play that same scheme again and I trust our staff to put our players in positions to succeed and exploit it.

This is a more advanced Laker site. This isn't a low rent laker site like Lakersground.net. The site doesn't get syntax errors when more than 10 people get on it and we have a gametime thread where information travels faster.

GAME 1: LAKERS 116, HEAT 98

The Los Angeles Lakers made a big statement in Game 1 of the 2020 NBA Finals against the Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat, with a convincing 116-98 victory.

The Lakers dominated the Heat in the paint area as they’ve done to their opponents the entire postseason. No team has been to deal with LA’s size particularly Anthony Davis and Game 1 was no different.

Anthony Davis was the best player on the court with 34 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks. This has been a consistent theme for the Lakers during these playoffs. Davis also hit 2/4 of his three point attempts, was perfect from the free throw line going 10/10, and shot 11/21 overall from the field.

The Heat got off to a great start leading by 13 points in the first quarter, however the Lakers erased the deficit very quickly and dominated the rest of the way out scoring Miami 106-75. They really just could not contain Davis, who really was the catalyst for getting the Lakers erasing the early deficit.

Miami’s best hope at containing the Lakers size particularly Anthony Davis was with their All Star center Bam Adebayo, who has been the Heat’s consistently best player during their run to the Finals.

Unfortunately for the Heat, Adebayo was very ineffective and really struggled with the Lakers size, he had only 8 points and four rebounds in 21 minutes of action before having to leave the game due to injury.

Lakers supporting cast around superstars Anthony Davis and LeBron James have been much maligned throughout the season as well as the playoffs despite the Lakers very successful run to the Finals. While there was some reason for skepticism particularly when it comes to the Lakers ability to spread the court around their two stars because the Lakers have been mediocre at best when it comes to three point shooting during this season.

However, during this postseason run the Lakers shooting has been much improved hitting timely shots particularly down the stretch of a lot of these games. In Game 1 once again the Lakers got key contributions from their role players such as Danny Green, Kentavious Caldwell Pope, Alex Caruso, Rajon Rondo, and Markieff Morris.

As a team the Lakers shot 15/38 on their three point attempts, which is just under 40 percent shooting. If the Lakers continue to shoot this well from three point range Miami really has no chance especially considering the big size advantage.

The big story line after Game 1 was two key injuries for the Heat, which are injuries to two of their top players in Goran Dragic and Bam Adebayo. Both players left the game and were unable to return, they are also both listed as doubtful for Game 2.

Now what impact does this have on the series the rest of the way? Most people would agree that these injuries really could be devastating for the Heat because both Adebayo and Dragic were instrumental in Miami’s improbable run to the Finals.

For Miami their biggest advantage is really at the point guard position with Dragic particularly with some of the issues the Lakers have had defending opposing point guards. Dragic did not play in Game 2 and his status for the rest of the Finals is uncertain.

GAME 2: LAKERS 124, HEAT 114

Bam Adebayo and Goran Dragic were out for Miami in Game 2 as expected, Tyler Herro and Meyers Leonard were inserted into the starting lineup. These guys are more then capable replacements although it certainly these are two huge losses for the Heat.

Miami continued to play a lot of zone defense in Game 2, which they have done the entire postseason. Despite how well the Lakers shot the ball in Game 1 clearly Miami’s strategy has been to entice them to shoot more three point shots and keep the ball out of the paint.

As effective as Miami’s zone defense throughout the playoffs they have not faced a team like the Lakers with the great size particularly with Anthony Davis and a player like LeBron James who is such a great floor general.

LeBron is just too smart of a player and he is just continuing to pick them apart. LeBron not only did a great job once again facilitating the Lakers offense, but also whenever he put his head and attacked he was able to get to the rim at will.

The Heat gave a valiant effort tonight led by Jimmy Butler who had a great all around game with 25 points, 13 assists, and 8 rebounds. Miami also got some great production from their bench particularly Kelly Olynyk who scored 24 points including hitting 3/7 of his three point attempts.

Miami clearly missed Bam Adebayo because just like in Game 1 they simply had no answers for Anthony Davis who he scored 32 points, 14 rebounds, and has made 15/20 of his shot attempts. AD was also hitting his jump shot consistently in this game and when that’s the case there really is no way of slowing this guy down.

Anthony Davis just has the entire package offensively because he’s terrific in the low post with a variety of moves, can hit the jumper both mid range as well as three, he is a nightmare matchup in the pick and roll, a great rebounder, and can take opposing players off the dribble.

In addition to his incredibly efficient offensive game AD has once again been a force on defense doing a great job when he has switched on some of Miami’s perimeter players, he’s altered a number of shots, and really just causing so many problems for Miami with his length.

The Lakers as a team did a great job attacking and taking advantage of Miami’s zone defense. The Lakers are doing exactly what you need to do against a zone defense, which is moving the ball and attacking the middle of the zone. This has resulted in a number of easy buckets in the paint as well as generating a number of open looks from three point range.

As dominant as Davis has been LeBron James continues to show why he’s still arguably the best player in the league at 35 years old. LeBron has continued to pick apart this Heat defense, he has not been fooled by Miami’s zone defense and LeBron is just doing such a great job as a floor general making sure the Lakers are in tune on both ends of the court.

LeBron scored 33 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, made 14/25 of his field goal attempts, and was 3/8 on his three point attempts. Miami knows LeBron as well as anyone because he spent four seasons there, winning two titles and two Finals MVP’s.

However, that has not helped the Heat contain LeBron because he has been just as dominant as AD. LeBron has improved so much as a shooter throughout his legendary career and it has shown late in his career.

The Heat were simply outmatched tonight in Game 2, while they did hang in there despite being so outmatched from a talent perspective watching this game you never really thought there was any chance they would win the game because the Lakers were in control the entire game.

The Lakers are now only two wins away from winning their 17th championship as a franchise and their first in a decade. Game 3 is Sunday night we will see if Miami can respond and make this a series.

Miami had no choice but resort to the zone. They go man to man and it is a repeat of Game 1. We did enough to keep them at bay. James and Davis found seams, spaces to score on passes. Our offensive rebounding also shot up. At one point we had 16? Crazy number. Had we made more threes (not our strength), it would have pulled them out and destroy them.

Usually I'm pretty cautious about my predictions, but at this point, I'll be surprised if we don't sweep this series. That's with good or bad shooting. If we shoot 3s at a 37+% rate, we'll blowout the last two games. If we shoot under, it'll be like today, probably closer, but we'll still win the game.

Hey man, to be fair, there were some benefits back in the day to having underpowered websites... Mainly, it was always exciting when CL would crash because I’d wonder if some big trade had just been announced causing everyone to login and crash the server
