Good points. I guess becoming a hired mercenary for the fans is a good gamble... especially because we all know which team would win that contest lol

Not sure there's nearly 24million worth of care from fans to make his dream come true. So if it flops, does he look bad? Or no?

He mentioned if he doesn’t get $24 million, he will donate whatever that was collected to charity.

I think the league will ultimately squash this, I’m sure this somehow violates the CBA... I mean what’s to stop Steve Ballmer from dropping a “anonymous” donation and he gets to sign with a capped out Clippers for the minimum?

Bad precedent and could see Ballmer pulling strings with some covert intermediary(s), or other owners possibly. Doubt Jeanie would, my opinion.

Ballmer is a good owner with deep pockets.

The Clips will be a threat for a long time.

    That's just the reality.

Takes balls to stay in LA and to keep the same team name with all of the stink on it. He'd do better elsewhere, but have to admire the guts. They've already been respectable since the moment he took over and Sterling was gone. NBA needs good owners who care, but I hope they never win anything meaningful during my lifetime.

I mean, Balmer has enough money to buy the NBA (assuming all the teams are for sale and he liquidates his assets). It's not exactly difficult to be a good owner when you've got all the funds in the world to make things run. Other owners who are wealthy might be cash strapped and focus more on earning a profit while this is probably Balmer being bored and needing to spend money.

It's not just about money. It's about hiring the right people to run your team, and setting the right culture. Jim Buss had all the money in the world at his disposal, but had no business running a team, and it showed. Balmer, for all we can say about him, was in the room with Doc and Lawrence Frank when the three of them convinced Kawhi to come play for the Clippers (provided they could land a PG-caliber player) and that also speaks to something. There are any number of reasons why Kawhi didn't come to the Lakers, and the same is true for Aldridge, KD, etc., and none of those reasons are "lack of money."

Sure, a competent management and setting the right culture comes to play. It actually is much better for owners to stay away from making these decisions. But when you're rich, you have the capacity to do things other owners can't. You will gladly pay the luxury tax, offer incentives, etc., that poorer owners can't. Many of these NBA owners are wealthy by average standards but Balmer's networth (minus Paul Allen RIP) guarantees that money won't be an issue. Lakers are a separate issue mainly because we don't even know who is running that team officially and the fanbase of the Lakers are ride or die fans. They will stick to the Lakers regardless of winning or not. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the Lakers are still a top revenue team despite losing seasons. I'm thinking of it from the perspective of being an NBA player or executive who wants to earn money after the NBA. Balmer provides that. He's not afraid to spend the money to make it happen (which is why the Clippers are actually relocating in the near future). Not many owners can influence a decision like that. You don't think Balmer offers incentives that other owners can't? I'm sure if Doc phoned Balmer asking to use a private plane for a vacation, he'd have one ready within the hour. Same with Kawhi. Balmer probably hooks Kawhi's family up with Microsoft positions. Money talks and fixes a lot of problems.

I basically agree with all of this. Kinda wish we upped our "money under the table" game since it's clearly a relevant factor for players and coaches. But then I remember that the rules governing that sort of thing are only honored in the breach, and only when it's the Lakers.

Paul Allen had that Microsoft money too. And he was a good man. Doesn't mean anything. The Lakers always get the best players no matter what era.

he almost got us at a recent apex, tbh. clips got kawhi, and we wanted him. got PG, and we wanted him. we got lebron and AD (we win), but it's a LOT closer than it used to be, and we have to get used to it. ownership needs to up its game. and rambii ain't it.
