there is nothing wrong with that squad, I have a hard time naming an all time best "TEAM" that doesn't have Magic as the PG but I can see Perkins POV here. One of the next best distributors all time is Lebron and he can do it from the SF position and he has the two best scoring guards ever to dish to. That would be pretty lethal. Kareem to anchor the middle. Then Bird. Hmmm. Does he give them the rest of the intangibles a great team would need to dominate?? Probably.

So, here is my team but not sure it is any better:

    Magic
    Kobe
    Jabbar
    Lebron
    Davis

This is a bit heretical because I am literally not naming Jordan. Why?? Because I think if you name him, you build the team around him. Kobe can do 99% of what Jordan can and he has a better long range shot. We would need that. Also, could name Curry but I don't think he is a great defensive player. While Magic may not have been great per se, he was under rated in this regard and he does have length and can close off parts of the court. But with Kobe, Davis and Jabbar in their primes, there is not really much space left on the court that is not going to get A+ defensive coverage. Lebron is just the best large forward who is capable of doing everything and to spell Magic at PG at times. Davis because he is one of the best PF/Centers to ever play the game. Projecting a little but not much. Dude is a defensive monster who is more than capable of taking over a game offensively when he gets going.

Finally, screw it they are all Lakers and that is a plus. I would take this starting 5 over any other I could muster. Build a starting five that doesn't include any of them and tell me why they are better!! You'll be wrong but it will be fun to listen! LOL

I'd replace Kobe with Magic. No need to have Kobe and MJ on the same starting five. Too similar. If you go Magic, MJ and LeBron 1-3, you have the best PG, SG, and SF ever at each position. The 4 and the 5 are more competitive. As between Wilt, Shaq, Russell, and Kareem, there's no clear favorite at center. But I take Kareem. 6 MVPs, 6 titles. An unstoppable shot. Unmatched.

    I'm keeping Kobe.

First of all, because technically speaking that means taking Kobe away from any potential rival. Second, because he's my favorite player and I want him in my team for personal reasons.

And all of that said, if I have Kobe, MJ and Kareem, I just don't think my team can lose. Sure, Kobe and MJ are the same profile, but both Kobe and Jordan are pretty damn good and I know they could adjust to playing together. They're also ultimate competitors with utmost respect for one another, which I think would be contagious for the rest of the team (having Larry is a plus for this also), getting quite the positive result.

And maybe the most important part? Who even cares about the opponent of this starting five. I want to see every practice with Kobe and MJ. That would be crazy... only real risk is getting injury because of overworking.

Also, I hate this 3-point era. So I'd love to have a team winning that doesn't depend that much on 3s.

Ugh, I'm just imagining all this and I get kinda sad thinking about Kobe.

He actually had some game plus he looked physically kinda like Kobe on the floor if you hadn’t been paying attention. And.... tore his achilles before Kobe did his.

Favorite top 5's is one thing

But I feel like an all time starting 5 no matter the player, they would be able to play exceptionally well disregarding personal goals. Given that they're playing in their respectable position (I.E. were not gonna have like 3 PF, or 3 SGs. 1 PG, SG, SF, PF and center)

But even with my fave 5 (AI/Kobe/T-Mac/KG/Shaq). AI and Kobe can play together, when people say they cant it boggles my mind. They're gonna have the easiest looks in their entire career.

Like our 2013 squad, if Dwight was on the same page and was committed to defense and picking up garbage I think we would have been successful. excluding the d'antoni factor.

I am amazed that D'antoni is even still in the league. His coaching is better suited to college, but his personality is too much for young guys to deal with. I simply cannot stand the guy and everywhere he has gone, has been mostly a disaster. He will have a year or two of decent seasons but it is always a downward process.

D'Antoni excels on a roster suited to his style.

I mean Pau at the 3 point line? I mean we have Pau, Kobe, and Artest whom can all work the post but he wanted to a run and gun style on a roster that wasn't fit for it. Not to mention he was NOT THE COACH to handle Kobe and D-Coward.

He simply can not adjust his coaching style to a roster, the roster needs to fit him.

He can draw up some great plays, was the Godfather of the modern game, but damn he's such a 1 dimensional in a 1 dimensional coach. As in he was always about offense but even on offense he can only coach a certain play style.

IMO, hes like an overrated offensive coordinator rather than a head coach.

I agree. He reminds me of Mike Martz... the great offensive coordinator for the Rams and architect of "The Greatest Show on Turf." They seem to be cut from the same cloth in how they act and aren't really HC material.

Assuming you're actually allowed to check guys on defense, I agree. Because Steph and Harden, for instance, would be bloodied. Playing current rules, you might need some three-point shooting. I don't know. Then again, all of those guys could take 10+ FTs a game.

im just curious, Why Kobe at the 3 and MJ at the 2? Was there a reason behind it or just preference.

I think MJ being more physical and kobe being more of a shooter than MJ I'd put MJ at the 3 especially with the big hands.

They would be interchangeable. I have MJ just above Kobe on my all time greats list, so I gave him first dibs on their best team spot.

If we are considering defense, that obliterates the Steph over Kobe argument. If prime Kobe guards Steph, he shuts him down. If Steph guards Kobe, he goes for 81.
