If HOU gave us all of their first round picks in the years that we've given ours away to NOLA...PLUS more picks...yes, I'd take Cp3.

    ...wait...no I wouldn't.

Klay and KD are still lined up to receive max offers. From their home team, as well as outside suitors.

In an unlikely event that a freak injury occurs (which you take preventative methods to ensure doesn’t happen...remember, those freak injuries followed other injuries for Klay/KD) I think Kawhi would still receive max offers. He showcased to the world just how good he is and has proven before that he’s not afraid to bet on himself. He’s continuously stated over the last week that he never stopped believing in himself and how good he was.

Maybe he could show Bron how a pro takes care of his body to stay in the league a long time at a high level and not be having groin pulls at his young age.

I’ve heard people speculate Beverly wouldn’t be an option because of all the crap he’s talked on the Lakers as a Clipper, and some have suggested that he still has animosity towards the organization since we originally drafted him and then traded him.

This doesn’t sound like the kind of guy who is going to worry about things like that as he heads into free agency...

I've been legitimately warming to the idea of signing Beverly and using the additional cap room on another solid guy. Bev is the perfect role player for this team. Fiesty, plays hard, can hit the 3, knows his role, etc.

I support that hypothetical wholeheartedly and I would think it would have a better way of going through with more draft incentive.

I would actually one up your scenario and use some draft incentive to pluck away Masai (who currently has 2 yrs remaining) as well. Kuz and/or Bonga + 1-2 moderately protected 1st round picks + some 2nd rounders for Kawhi/Masai would be amazing...but again, our war chest is running bare post AD.

As for acquiring his bird rights...that would be the plan and if Kawhi opts into his 21.4m option, then it didn't matter what AD does with his trade kicker cause we were have enough cap to take him in.

Kawhi can threaten to opt out and take our 27.7m in cap a la the Cp3 route to Houston. So that is a possibility.

And if that's the case, he would play out the 2019/20 season at that bargain price:

    2019: 21.4m (opt in)
    2020: 34.8m (1st year of 2 year 30% max deal)
    2021: 37.6 (2nd year of 2 year 30% max)
    2022: 43.8m (1st year of 5yr 35%max deal)
= 137.6m to get full 35%max via bird rights

Compare that to hang him find on as a free agent in the most favorable scenario to get close to his max:

    2019: 32.5m (1st year of 2+1 30% max deal)
    2020: 34.1m
2021: 42.4m (opt out and 1st year of early bird 35%/5% annual escalator max deal)
    2022: 44.5m (2nd year of 35% early bird deal)
= 153.5m in first 4 years to earn early bird rights

So in the first 4 years he will sacrifice roughly 16m if he chooses to go the full bird rights opt-in & trade route. But he makes up for that loss and then some on the back end via his full bird rights.

Did Beverly and/or Seth play much sg last year ?

I’d spend all $27 mil (if we do july 6th and can’t get a max FA) on Beverly, Seth, brook, bullock. I’d prefer green but he’s going wherever Kawhi goes. Then get Javale with the room ex, and collison with the vet min.

If we are at 24M (worst case scenario), what can we realistically do?

    Pat Bev-10M
    Brook Lopez/Dedmon-9M
    Bullock-5M
Rondo-Room exception (would hope we can get him to a minimum, but I doubt it)

We are still down a wing who can play good defense and guard guys like Kahwi/PG/KD in future

Ariza maybe for the 5M instead of Bullock or for Room if Rondo won't take bench role. But he was pretty cooked last year, drpm way down.

Extra 4M from trade kicker could even be very useful, let alone the 8.5M if it happens end of July

Do we maybe go cheaper on a Center? I rather AD close at the 5, but he is a bit thin for some guys and don't want him to be banged up.

Regarding filling up our cap with a max vs role players, if we don't sign a max this year, doesn't that mean we'd given up on another star for the foreseeable (3+ years) future? Either that or another year of signing 1+1 deals that significantly reduces the crop of willing FA's I'd assume. I'm not sure I'm OK with that. Let's go for that 3rd star.

^^^ 100%. Unless we think Kuz or another 2nd tier guy fills that role on the cheap.

As expected Lakers and AEG dropping mgmt consultants to focus on FA with arrival of Davis. Lots of updates on the AEG business approach for all the top free agents, that I can update in more depth when I have some more time. But any specific questions ask away and I'll address later tonight.

    Best,
    Mr. Rambis

I think if we don’t have a max available this year and instead do one year deals on roleplayers, we still wouldn’t have enough for a max next summer. Plus, I don’t think next year’s crop of free agents is that great anyways unless you want Klutch to have us max out Draymond...

It would be nice if we can keep roleplayers to either a 2 or 3 year deal though so that we have cap room after Lebron’s contract expires.

But yeah, I agree that I prefer to try to get that max player this year, whether that requires whatever combination of delaying the trade, convincing someone to take a slight pay cut, or dumping Bonga/Wagner.
