Sure, but my point was more about why we traded D-Lo and Mozgov away, and then later Nance and Clarkson, these moves were made to open up 2 max slots in one summer. So if the Lakers didn’t think they had a shot to sign 2 max guys (I’m guessing they knew LeBron was coming for a little while because if all the media knew, how would they not hear the same stuff), then trading D-Lo to dump Mozgov was a pointless move a year ahead of when they actually needed to do it. abeer was referring to that move being dumb, I didn’t disagree with him, but my only way to make any sense of it was that they thought Paul George and another max guy (maybe LeBron) were coming here last summer. Otherwise the D-Lo trade was premature, and the Nance/Clarkson trade was unnecessary.

Thanks for clarifying at @Weezy !

    - D-Lo and Mozgov were traded away because Magic/Pelinka wanted D-Lo out for a variety of reasons, and that extra pick was going to be sent to Indiana for Paul.

    - Nance and Clarkson were primarily traded for salary cap reasons to get LeBron and set things up for other moves.

What are the Lakers chances of signing Kawhi Leonard this offseason if you don't mind me asking? Also, have you heard of any rumors about the Lakers targeting Alex McKechnie from the Toronto Raptors for their new head athletic trainer?

Are you insinuating that the nba/silver prohibited PG from joining the Lakers as a FA to punish the Lakers for their multiple tampering infractions? I don’t doubt that, tbh.

New plan since they can't get AD?

Please be for CP3. Would love to see him end what's left of his career in Boston. They deserve each other.

Say we trade BI, #4, ZO, 2021 1st, Bonga for AD, who do we look to sign/trade to be our point guard. Assume we can’t get Kyrie, Kemba, or DLo.

Kind of worrisome for who is left to sign.
    Maybe dragic if opts out.
Collision isn’t bad but pretty small.
George hill is a bench guy now imo.
    Rubio is poor fit.
I assume brogdon and rozier get matched.

Patrick Beverly is best fit and talent for value of the FA pgs. Doubt LAC let’s him go though

Any guys who may get shipped who aren’t getting paid tons?

So, if the Nets sign Kyrie and KD, do we really think we would go after D'Lo? Seriously? My guess is the dude would rather do a sign and trade to play with the Pelicans in order to help the Nets land AD before he signed with the Lakers.

    Hi @ftechytt !

-Internally, the Lakers were recently confident they had a strong chance at Kawhi. But, since then (around the start of the finals) his camp has gone quiet. Prior to that, the Lakers were talking to Dennis and Kawhi's agent about some New Balance stuff that I'm helping with.

-I haven't heard anything, but I also don't have visibility that deep into the front office. Generally if it's not impacting business revenues I won't be of much help.

Hope that helps. I know it's a lot of non-answers, but unfortunately things are constantly dynamic, and I am not directly tied into the day-to-day of the Lakers front office to have more granular information

It was a complicated situation. I'm running out of time but I'll do my best to summarize in bullets.

    • When Paul came out and said what he did, nobody was offering Indiana anything. The Lakers had all the cards, and were about to close a deal of 27/28, Randle, Clarkson, and Nance.
    • The Pacers tried to get a better deal. They proposed a Paul-Klay trade to the Warriors, who considered it, but turned it down due to injury and chemistry concerns. They also spoke to Cleveland but since they were already scared about LeBron's departure and couldn't get him to commit long term, nothing materialized.
    • The Pacers were upset at the situation and used the small market angle to loudly complain to the NBA, resulting in a tampering investigation.
    • The NBA did their equivalent of a subpoena on everything the Lakers had. The Lakers did a good job of hiding almost everything, but they found forwarded texts of Rob's on Brian Shaw's phone that implicated the Lakers pretty badly.
    • Adam Silver was very upset and while he didn't pull a David Stern, he basically made it clear he didn't want to reward the Lakers in this situation. When Silver is that upset, nobody in the NBA wants to cross him.
    • Normally, tampering is okay and the teams look the other way. But this was seen as a situation where a player and a big market team conspired against a small market team to get what they both wanted. If these facts came to light, small market owners would riot.
    • The Mintz-Pelinka rivalry may have played a role too. Mintz convinced Paul to be open to other options, and the Lakers/Pacers moved on.
    • When the Pacers told other teams the Lakers dropped out of the race, OKC came in with a low ball offer and the Pacers took it.
    • The NBA then announced a fine after the fact.
    • When it came time to free agency, Silver was still not pleased, so the Lakers never even made a strong recruiting effort. It was too risky to tamper again. Paul sort of just went with OKC given that was his best option.
    • The documentary and rumors about the Lakers being upset due to not getting a meeting were just put out there to save face for all sides. AEG actually provided Paul's camp some media resources to help with the filming! After all, if you watched the film, you would have seen them interview Sam Presti and Mintz, I believe. The decision was already made long back. The Lakers knew they were not getting Paul George.

Yeah. Even if it were to turn out to be not real it's damn good. I found this at the start really interesting. Don't recall anyone bringing this package up?

Here's the other side to the Kawhi trade. So for those teams that want to play the dark horse team to AD, Pels better be careful in staying too petty with our package.

Also seems like KD trying to water down the Ky recruitment to BK smoke. I still think Butler will be the guy joining Ky in BK.

Bogdanovic is a really good third tier guy, but really, over DeRozan? I don’t even like DeRozan and that seems silly to me, you’d have essentially traded Kawhi for Bogdanovic just to spite the Lakers. Damn, Pop, that’s harsh.
