The above per Larry Coon.
I'm not saying Coon is wrong, but it is my understanding that McGee counts as a vet exception that we sign last along with Stevenson once we cap out. McGee's actual cap hit once we go over the cap is going to be 1.5m. So with McGee and Stevenson still technically not part of the roster yet, LA is sitting with 10 players, so they will have an incomplete roster charge of 1.7m for 2 spots (838K per). That means Bron, Deng, Kcp, Rondo, Zo, BI, Kuz, Hart, Moe and Zu + the incomplete roster charges will lead to around 96.7m in salary with about 5.1m in space remaining (in actuality 6.8m, once we fill the roster to 12). Deng Stretched: 17.4m in cap space (14.9m if you consider incomplete roster charge of 3) Deng dumped into available cap (ie Atl and Sac) with no salary returning: 24.8m in cap space (22.3m if you consider incomplete roster charge of 3) Also Kawhi has a 15% trade kicker that he could completely/partially waive if traded to his preferred destination of the Lakers. But let's say he doesn't waive it, then his incoming salary via trade would be 23.1m (vs 20.1m). In that case, we can completely take him in with capspace if we dump Deng and have the option of just sending the Spurs future draft compensation (which is obviously super unlikely.) However if we stretch Deng, then at a minimum, we have to send 3.2m worth of salary, if 15% trade kicker is not waived and 1.5m worth of salary, if 15% trade kicker is completely waived. So that means at the least are legally able to trade 1 of Hart, Kuz or Moe (all make 1.7m) plus Zu (1.5m) if Kawhi picks up his trade kicker. And at the very least we're legally able to trade only Zu for Kawhi if Kawhi completely waives his trade kicker. Let's see how much we can squeeze SA as this thing drags out. Btw, we must now wait till July 31st to include Moe in any trades and Dec 15th to include Bron, KCP, Rondo, Stevenson and McGee in any trade. Surprisingly, Bron is ineligible to have a no-trade clause placed into his contract (must be at a minimum an 8year vet AND played 4years minimum with the team signing him). However, KCP does have a no-trade clause because he will have earned his early bird rights with LA at the end of this 2nd 1year deal. Btw, Real regarding an earlier discussion we had in this thread, I believe you can renounce the exceptions to gain cap space and then regain them after Oct1st, once your cap reflects the new season (kinda like renouncing a player, but still keeping their rights if they remain unsigned till after Oct1st). Either way, the discussion is moot, since numerous cap resources are listing Lance as a player we signed with the Room and not cap space. So thx for enlightening me on that matter.
Soooo.. Deng doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. Anyone think we will actually give him some playing time this season, maybe with LeBron, rather than sit him out for another entire year of his career? We do need bodies at this point, he is technically a living human body.
So you're saying leave him in for 38 minutes a game against Randle to take the brunt of his rage? Hmmmm
Assuming we resign Brook. Starters: PG - Ball SG - Ingram SF - Lebron PF - Kuzma C - Brook Bench: PG - Rondo SG - KCP SF - Hart ** PF – Lance * C – Wagner * *If we wanted to go big we could play Wagner at the 4 and McGee at the 5* **Hart could play some backup 4 I would imagine too given his success last year at guarding the post in spurts** Reserves: Svi Mykhailiuk Zubac Deng Bonga I like it a lot!
Ironic that that is exactly what Brook did to us is ""book it" Updated numbers: 10 signed, (not counting Stephenson and Mcgee so 12, for all intensive purposes). ...funny how last night Burke and Jones both refused to speculate on what the roster will be on opening night. Both really believe we have more moves to make.
I doubt it. We have one roster spot still available if we sign Svi. There aren't even any "waive" candidates. We're going to save that spot for a mid-season acquisition is my guess.
Updated numbers: 13 counting Stephenson and Mcgee who will sign last and whose deals can not count as money over the cap. We have not yet signed Svi which seems likely so, 14. 2018-2019 Roster. This appears to be what we are rolling with barring trades or using the last slot and room exception likely to be reserved in the event a player that can help is released by waiver/bought out. 2018-2019 Roster. Yup, we've finally signed all the guys we said we were today. Looks like this is the final roster we roll with at the start of the season. I think we keep that roster spot open for any waived players and trade flexibility. Still think we are a bit thin at the center position but screw it, I'm ready for battle.
We definitely don't have a starting caliber Center, but I can see McGee, Zu & Wagner being really annoying to other Teams.
McGee with extensive minutes will be a foul magnet. Don't know what Zubac will bring. Wagner? I'd rather see him at the 4. I'm definitely not comfy with our rotation at the 5.
Remember we have the room exception and a slot. Someone mentioned in another thread that Tyson Chandler was an excellent candidate for a buyout to make room for Deandre Ayton coming in.....
Agreed , roster adjustments definetely will be made during the season but I especially don't understand our approach regarding the center position at all As for the poor depth at the 4 spot , I think it's a deliberate choice from our FO to force Lebron to spend major minutes at the PF position for the 1st time in his career .
This! If we're going to use the room exception on a buyout candidate...it can't really be for the post trade deadline market, then it woulda been better to add Boogie who is projected to return around that time as well. Why not add a vet big and possibly waive him a la Bogut midseason if we need that extra roster spot. Heck, we could even waive/dump Zu if it needed to come to that. I honestly believe we need that extra roster spot to facilitate a trade and since talks broke down with Kawhi, instead of waiting to sign Lance/McGee/Svi, we used our remaining cap and will revisit the trade when our rookies are moveable and Kawhi and Pop can't come to terms during team USA meetings. But to hold an empty roster spot for a buyout candidate till February is not ideal imho.
