Okay fam, the Boogie signing seems to have deflated our largely successful summer. Remember that all these contracts that are being reported, they’re not officially signed and essentially a verbal agreement. So till then, I suspect we’re trying to operate like a team that is above the cap and not a team that has cap space. As of right now LA is capped out and above the cap with the capholds of BLo, IT and Frye. We agreed to a deal with KCP for 12m and we renounced Jules caphold. So our books without non-Laker free agent activity goes as such: Deng (18) KCP (12) Zo (7.5) BI (5.8) Kuz (1.7) Hart (1.7) Moe (1.7) Zu (1.5) = 50m (which leaves 52m in cap space if we renounced all our free agents…but we haven’t yet) BLo caphold (34) Frye caphold (14.1) IT caphold (11.9) = 60m in capholds so we have 110m in team salary at the moment and are capped out. Yet we are not a tax-payer (luxury tax threshold is @124m) so we get the non-taxpayers MLE of 8.8m to use. We’ll get to that in a minute. So lets say we renounce Frye’s caphold, then we dip down to 96m in team salary. So we have cap space to use and we add McGee (2.4) and Stevenson (4.4m) and that puts us at right about 102m again, which is the salary cap. So we’re capped out again. We now renounce BLo’s caphold and now all of a sudden we have Bron’s amount in cap space. So once we sign him, we’re back to being capped out again. Now consider that since we’re capped out, we are eligible to use the non-taxpayer MLE and that is what I assume we used on Rondo. That amount takes us back to 110m in team salary. So maybe there really wasn’t a market for Boogie cause we didn’t have the resources to provide him what he wanted. I mean, we could have renounced IT to get him his money, but we didn’t. So why would we do that? I suspect its to use the non-taxpayer MLE(8.8m) as opposed to the room exception (4.4m) to get more spending power. Also when you’re operating above the cap, you can use your player’s rights to make trades and movements that you would not be able to do if you were operating below the cap by renouncing their capholds. That being said, IT just started following the Orlando Magic and seeing how we renounced Jules, and only have McGee and Zu at center, looks like the Magic could afford to lend us one of the centers they have there so that it creates more of an opportunity for Bamba. IT @ his caphold amount of 12m (see KCP and Avery getting paid roughly the same amount, so that is his market value) and Deng (2 years 18m per) are 30m in outgoing salary and can bring back up to 37.5m in salary. Depending on what Orlando wants to do, they could send out bad their bad contracts, that SA might actually be interested in. How about Biyombo (2 year 17m per) and Fournier (3 years 17m per). That’s a lot of salary to dump, but they are taking on Deng and maybe we can also throw some draft capital in there. Now we can turn around and send Fournier, plus Hart and Kuz and future picks to bring in Kawhi. We end up with Biyombo, Bron and Kawhi, Rondo, Stevenson and McGee. Not such a bad haul, particularly defensively. And we get to retain Zo and BI.

I changed to the standard sundays whites forum style instead of road purple and everything looks fine on my end. I think it just may have been that purple theme was making things look different for me.
Although the amount is close (he's getting 9 mil and the non-taxpayer MLE is 8.6), Every breakdown I've seen says we are using pure cap space on his deal. They're being pretty exact too. They wouldn't round up 8.6 to 9 mil. We also renounced Jules and his cap hold at the same time we signed Rondo presumably to make room. We should still have the MLE. For Lopez? Or split between Lopez & ?
To list it visually: Lonzo/Rondo/(Caruso) Ingram/Pope/Mykhailiuk(Newman) LeBron/Hart/Stephenson/Deng Kuzma/Wagner McGee/Zubac We have so many freaking wings it's crazy. I have no idea what minutes Stephenson is going to get. I don't think he'll play in front of Hart? I can't be mad at depth though. We still need a big. Right now there's Brook Lopez, Amir Johnson, Channing Frye, Jahlil Okafor D). Give me Brook Lopez and let's call it an off-season.
Not sure where the doom and gloom is coming from due to our post Lebron signings. We added the best player in the world along with productive veterans who can help the development of our young guys. But we’re loading the team with non-shooters right? Because Tyler Ennis was so much more of a three point threat than Rondo? And there were other veterans minimum backup centers available that could snipe from three point range? Stephenson is the only net negative for our shooting and I don’t expect him to play too much. If we add Brook to this roster, we’re set to be a top 4 team in the West IMO
I see it more like this Ball / Rondo / Caruso Pope / Hart / Mykhailiuk Ingram / Stephenson / Deng James / Kuzma Lopez / McGee / Wagner / Zubac Might not be Lopez, but we absolutely need a starting center. McGee played like 10 minutes a game the past few seasons.
Yours probably makes more sense, but yes we need Lopez back at this point. I'd give him whatever cash we have left. I don't want to be piecing together with some Amir Johnson signing.
These are all estimates at the moment. If it's being reported that the amounts are close enough to exception money (8.6m vs 9m) then a team can announce it as an exception signing vs a cap signing when the books start to shape up on July 6th. For example, NOP doesn't have cap space even after renouncing Boogie's caphold, yet they signed Jules to a 2yr 18m contract. So obviously they used the non-taxpayer MLE there, and it's being reported as a 9m per year contract. But it's just an estimate. A true 2yr Mle contract is 8.6m with a 5% escalator, so you're looking at 8.6m in yr 1 and 9.1 in yr 2 = 17.7m which is being reported as a 18m deal. I honestly suspect that we're operating as an above the cap team so that we could gain the Mle (8.6m) vs the room exception (4.4m). But it provides us flexibility in how we maneuver our cap of the amounts are estimates around exceptions: McGee 2.4m (assumed to be the vet min exception if we're maneuvering as a capped out team) Lance 4.5m (assumed to be the room exception if we're maneuvering as an under the cap team) Rondo 9m (assumed to be the Mle if we're maneuvering as a capped out team) Also if the 9m for Rondo is in fact the mle, then all we have left at the moment is vet min exceptions. If Rondo was given 9m out of cap space then we have 5.8m left in cap space to still hand out to free agents. Hope that clarifies my post a little bit.
We can't operate as an over the cap team if we freed up money to sign LeBron. We have to be under the cap to do that and once we are, the only exception we can have is the room.
Real, it's a verbal agreement and one we renounce BLo (to sign him to a vet min or available cap remaining) we free up roughly the amount for Bron's max. Just follow the crumbs in my first post in this thread as to how they could be operating above the cap. Either way, they're just gaining a bit more money with the exception if they are. (8.6m vs 4.4m). Plus it helps us add salary via trade if we're operating above the cap.
But we can't drop under the threshold and use the Non-Taxer Payer Exception. Once we have cap space freed up below the threshold, we're only allowed to use the Room Exception.
We either operate as a cap having team armed with the 4.4m room exception or we operate as a cap strapped team armed with the 8.6 m non-taxpayer. Also if we're cap strapped, we can take on more salary without worrying about it taking up cap space (which opens up more trade possibilities and partners now that it looks that Bron will be the only max guy we add this summer).
But the point is, to sign LeBron outright we need 35.6 million in cap room. If we are below the cap at any point this off-season, that means we can only use the Room Exception.
So I’m looking at the roster, seems someone like Stephenson or hart could be the odd man out... I don’t mind depth but it would be nice to maximize the talent and personnel we have... any idea if lebron is willing to play 4? Or if the staff will make him play 4? Or if it’s even viable to play him at 4? I mean the PF’s in this league are smaller than him...
I actually think that’s a big part of why the FO didn’t value Randle. While Randle could play small Ball 5, they valued rim protection more and if you’re comparing Bron and Randle as PF, obviously you go with the Kang. With our switching, we could even run Lebron as the “5” sometimes and it won’t beat him up any extra.
At least we have SIX (!) of the best rebounding guards in the league to grab and go ... then Lebron will be like " hold up , let's slow the pace down and play halfcourt" LMAO .. Cry later
