I'm very partial to Rawle Alkins, but they're not dissimilar players. Newman is good. Could definitely be a steal.
He was a top recruit according to the article and didn't fit his first program well afterall. Could have stayed after Graham declared but he felt ready obviously. Who cares he went undrafted... Unlike NFL, only so many selections. Will be rooting for all these dudes. Summer league should be intriguing personally.
Alright here's something on Malik Newman. Pros: - Microwave scorer/shooter. He can get real hot and put up points in a hurry. - Has shown solid scoring footwork. He can find separation on step backs, drives, pump fakes. - Solid shooter from outside even if his shot is a little slow and cumbersome. - Solid ball handler creating for himself. Cons: - Gets sloppy and careless at times. - Can lose focus defensively. - Not a great passer, so more of an undersized SG than a SG/SF. - Didn't regularly show NBA range. It's unclear if his shooting will translate given his long, slow release. Improved dramatically as a FT shooter, so it should.
...cumbersome and slow release? Kind of contradicts how Newman can score in droves. Small SG with suspect court vision? Vander Blue Redux?
It's not restrictive necessarily, but it's certainly not a quick shot. There's a lot of moving parts to it. He's very accurate when given time and space, but will that same time and space be available in the pros? Vander Blue is a very solid comparison. Hopefully a smarter version of Vander.
I don't think his release looks cumbersome or necessary slow. He gathers it on the three but that's fine. His release, finishes in the paint and some of his drives actually remind me a lot of Rashard Lewis.
Lewis was much, much bigger and could afford that weird release because his height and finish point made it a difficult shot to challenge. Newman is listed at 6'3". If he's got to get himself squared up like that and into that shooting motion every time, it's going to limit how many shots he can get off against NBA defenses. He just needs to make his shot more compact and get into it faster.
Oh yeah, no doubt. Lewis was a SF/PF at 6 foot 9 or so. Just mentioning that his offense and shot remind me of him and I think it'll be ok for corner three shooting.
Looking at the highlights...Newman reminds me of Robert Pack or a poor man's JR Rider. Small, compact with deceptive speed. Can finish at the cup. Most of his shots are off the catch. His stroke and resulting follow through isn't as ugly as that other kid we worked out whose name escapes me.
I'm watching some Newman while I watch Mykhailiuk (pretty nice having two guys off the same team). Some things that pop out: He sits in his defensive stance really nicely. He's low, bends his knees, has his arms in good position. He works hard defensively. He doesn't move his feet quite as well as you'd like. Sometimes he anticipates things that just don't happen and gets beat. His decision making is just infuriating at times. He sees passes too late and forces them, takes early contested shots, drives into traffic. Frustrating. Flashes a tremendous ability to get to the basket and solid ball handling. Thin, but athletic. He's perfectly suited for the G-League. He reminds me a lot of Vander Blue.
