The guy that wanted out because we weren't a 50 win team for a couple years is going to preach patience now, huh?

We can do both. We can sign two max guys and still keep most of the kids around, if not all of them.

I'm kind of with you on that...but I believe Whiteside has a player option the following year so he could opt out and he essentially becomes a 1-year rental. If he can get back to being the monster he was last year, this trade could help mitigate a potential loss of Randle while still getting LeBron and PG13 and being a very competitive team (and elite defensively)

I'd rather still have Deng, who supports our guys and still goes to practice. Zero footprint good or bad. While Hassan = all bad. Plus that is much less cap space to play with now if we trade for him.

Makes zero sense to want him here (type of bball we want to play) and trade for him.

The potential to backfire is there too and he's as bad or worse in LA as he was in Miami, opts in to his deal and hurts our cap space this summer and next.

Yeah. I thought it was an interesting take from him to say the least.

Whether or not I'd trade Deng for Whiteside straight up is a moot point as the Heat wouldn't consider that at all.

    (I would fwiw)

I've been wanting to bring this up for awhile now after seeing it multiple times, but why do you (general you) think that a PLAYER option is a 1 year rental? Yes he can opt out for a longer contract if he balls out, or he's a total dud and opts in and screws our cap for a year.

if we renounce kcp rights, are we still allowed to use him in a snt? i ask because say best case scenario we do get 2 max n retain randle but stay under the hard cap. that would allow us to snt kcp for player that wont push us over the hard cap, jist not sure how his fa rights applies in that instance

I had a thought if we struck out with the 2017 free agents, the gift of “cap space” still allows us to absorb large contracts of potential star players.

With the way a lot of teams flamed out during the playoffs, I can see the Raptors, Wizards, Blazers, Minnesota, Detroit, San Antonio, Memphis wanting to either “reboot” or just completely start the rebuild by trading away their higher paid players for younger, cheaper contracts.

Examples of who I can see the teams shopping:
    - Toronto would make DeRozen, Ibaka, Lowry, Valencunas available
    - Blazers would make McCollum (very unimpressive during playoffs) available
    - Wizards would make John Wall available after the Wizards played the last 30 games better without him.
    - Minnesota could make Wiggins available, he’s a young athletic scoring wing but he doesn’t play a lick of defense and their coach is Thibedeau...
    - Detroit, that entire team could be made available... Drummond, Griffin, Reggie Jackson
    - Memphis looks like they are ready to go for a complete rebuild and would make both Conley and Gasol available for young prospects and picks, while dumping their salaries.

If the Lakers could get any of the players mentioned above but the price is Hart, Zubac, and the 25th pick in exchange for any 1 of the players noted above (doing the other team a favour by absorbing the players big contract... which also means that in the summer of 2019, Lakers would only have cap space for 1 max contract), which players would you be ok with the Lakers getting?

For me I would go in this order of preference:
    1. Marc Gasol, he’s 33 now but would fill a need because we need a center with our existing roster. He’s also a excellent defender for his position, good passer and can hit the 3... while also able to post up.
    2. Andrew Wiggins, he’s young and I think although he’s terrible on defense, if we can add Wiggins to a young core of Lonzo, Ingram, and Kuzma.... imagine him growing with these guys over the next 5 years when Steph and Durant are 35-36 years old...,
    3. McCollum, I really like him and he fills a need of providing a 3 point shooting threat, is relatively young at 26 years old. Can seemlessly start at shooting guard.

In the event plan A (sign PG and LeBron) fails, Do any one of the 3 above and re-sign Randle and the summer is still salvaged.

you dont want players like wiggin/dd, poor 3pt shooters n no D. DD is what Wiggins becomes....id trade for Marc before dd/wiggins, Cj is small combo guard, no teams can win with that type of player if hes the #1 or #2 guy

-note- not sure if you watch clev/tor series last 2 yrs, if you did youd realize Derozen stats are misleading ,hes really not a good player

^DeRozan is a good player, just not a great player. Kind of like Paul George with the difference that George is a better shooter/defender (more valuable and easier to integrate into any team) and DeRozan is a better scorer/playmaker.

To add to that, DeRozan has been awful for entire playoff stretches/series, while George has only had occasional awful games. DeRozan has performed entire disappearing acts, while George has gone shot for shot with LeBron. I wouldn’t want that guy on this team, we caught a break him signing back in Toronto.

No to Derozan. I wanted him when he was a FA and we were in the dark days struggling to get out of the lottery, but now, absolutely NOT. He’s mentally broken in the playoffs and we are at the point where we are pushing into the playoffs next year.

Don’t waste the money and resources on him. He had his chance and we aren’t looking back.

Yeah no thanks on DeRozan. Honestly, he passed on us and chose the situation he's in now.

He and the Raptors can continue being owned by Lebron.

Its not just these playoffs too, go and look at the past 3 playoffs for him and the shooting numbers, everything in general is hot garbage.

I'm still a firm believer in bringing in assets...Especially ones that have names. We missed out on Derozan, Melo and LaMarcus... So instead we used our cap and well, I'd rather be in a situation now where we are entertaing Derozan trade packages rather than trying to unload Deng. Heck even Melo brought back Kanter, who was the 2nd leading oreb'er in the league and Mudiay (2015 7th overall pick) via McDermott.

Teams will always trade for "names". Not bringing in one over the last several summers while watching Dwight and Pau walk away for nothing really hurt.

Yeah, them not coming aboard led us to receiving multiple draft picks. But then look at how JC, Nance and Dlo were traded away for the valuable cap we ended up not using to draft those guys in the first place. Now consider that the majority of our "untouchables" (outside of BI) of Kuz, Zo and even Hart all came within one summer. Hart and Kuz aren't even typical rookies since they had lengthier collegiate careers and as a result are older. So all those years of sucking only to use that cap on contacts we need to shed with the assets we gained thru sucking has led us right back to square one in a way. And we still have Deng on the books that could possibly cost us Jules.

Bringing in "names" and having them as trade assets would have been a better route to take imho. That being said, I love our youth and hope for the best but there are better ways to use your money and we obviously chose the wrong way. I would have preferred to trading our young assets not to clear cap but rather to trade for a disgruntled star or to pacify a disgruntled star that we already have on the roster (see Pau trade to pacify Kob and no, I'm not saying Derozan is even on Kob's level in this particular fictional scenario..But y'all get the idea).

I've never liked or wanted Derozan and I stand by that.

We need a fire sale type trade where we get an All Star for expirings. I wouldn't mind Marc Gasol if the Gruz accept Dung/picks

Pretty much what's available to us if we have to keep hold of Deng throughout this season.
