you only use picks to trade Deng if you know for sure 2 max happens...otherwise its a waste of assets

If Pelinka gets rid of Deng before the draft, and signs two max guys, he has to be executive of the decade. He would have gotten rid of a malcontent, two of the worst contracts ever signed and gotten two super stars, all in a 18 month window since he took the job. Oh, and drafted Kuzma, Hart and Lonzo in that time. I do not know how he isn't a legend right off the bat, ahahah.

I want no part of trading our young core, especially Lonzo, Ingram, Kuzma and Randle for ANY star in this league. Trading them for cap space? Forget it. Building around those 4 players will give us the greatest chance of competing for over a decade. Keeping our core intact is more important than signing Lebron or George. They are the supplemental pieces to our core, not the other way around. We've suffered 4 years to build an exciting young team that other teams envy. Let's not ruin everything by being impatient. If that means keeping Deng til his contract expires so be it.

No to any kind of trades for our young core, but all things equal, Kawhi is a better player all the way around IMO. It really just depends on how he recovers from his injuries.

    I disagree fundamentally with this.

We've suffered 4 years to reach this moment and what makes that exciting is the ability to sign two max guys, not to rebuild solely around these young players. I love our young players, but there's no guaranteeing they're capable of winning a title literally throughout their entire career. We could go 10 years with this group and win nothing. What the Lakers have always done is when they've had the opportunity to strike, they've done it. Wilt. Kareem. Shaq. Kobe technically. Pau.

Having Kareem didn't cheapen Magic. Having Shaq and Pau didn't cheapen Kobe. Having Wilt didn't cheapen West or Baylor. Using our cap space to sign max players to help build with our team, not as complimentary pieces but as equals, is precisely what the Lakers have always done and should continue to do. If we end up having to sacrifice a kid (we shouldn't need to at this point) for the chance to build something possibly dynastic, it shouldn't be so easily dismissed. All options should be on the table when it comes to #17 and more.

i would just like to say I am so happy that Westbrook extended with OKC and didn't become a target for us. That guy becomes more and more unlikable with every passing game. I just watched the highlights of last night's game with Portland and every night he seems to push, shove, dance, and taunt. As soon as an opponent does anything like that, he'll snap and lose his cool. I don't think I could have handled rooting for this dude for 5 years.

    ^Yeah, second that on Westbrook.

PG is so perfect for our team right now. I'm just hoping he sees that...

A rookie Magic got to the Finals and won MVP with the help of Kareem. That type of experience/exposure is invaluable to player development. Kobe had to hit the fast track while Shaq was on the team. He tasted titles relatively early in his career and that is why Kob was hellbent on winning another title without Shaq. He was tired of missing the postseason and/or getting bounced in the 1st round, so he demanded a trade or a roster that could help him get one. That drove him and the Lakers franchise to 2 more titles.

These young guns of ours haven't done s*** yet. We can all sing kumbabya with each other as they continuously aim to break .500.

OR...we can jump start their development and give them invaluable experience through the playoffs via legitimate max player stars. Our kids need that vet...need that leader....need that champion. There are no guarantees any of them will become one and there are no guarantees this young roster even grows together since free agency can peck one or more of them off the roster in the future. You don't develop them and wait out the Dubs, especially since nothing is a given (ie Steph's injury concerns). You go out and get a winner now!

I want my cake and to eat it too.

(Keep youngins, sign max/near max vets, win championships, develop youth)

Basically I'm willing to trade Deng and 2nd round picks LMBO

Of course you disagree, we're on the opposite ends of this argument.

I'm all in on the youth movement and building a dynasty. I wouldn't mind adding a star or two along the way, but not at the expense of losing any of our kids. Not only do I want #17, I want #18, #19, and #20 too. This is the GSW or SAS approach.

Then there are folks like yourself and @vasashi17 that prefer the Heat or C Bags approach of building a quick superteam. I understand where you're coming from, I just don't agree.

There hasnt been 1 championship team that won with their "youth" from top to bottom, gsw got there by adding iggy/Livingston, clev got it with james return, mia got it with shaq n then james/bosh n they sacrificed a bunch to get to the bosh/james team

I never said top to bottom. We're inevitably going to have to add players. I just don't want to lose our players in Lonzo, Kuzma, Ingram, Randle.

Hypothetical scenario here, I would like to hear everyone’s thoughts.

So I’m willing to bet that when free agency hits on July 1st, of the big 3 free agents... LeBron will drag on his decision and decide what he wants to do the longest. I have a feeling Boogie and PG13 will make their decision on who they want to sign with within 2-3 days. LeBron might take 4-5 days to decide....

Having said that, I can almost imagine the Lakers will have meetings set up with LeBron, PG and Boogie on the first day of free agency to throw their pitches.

So here’s the hypothetical. What do you do if your Rob/Magic if on day 1, during your meeting with Boogie, he and his agent say “if you offer us the max, we will commit. But the offer has to be on the table right now”. Would you commit to Boogie on day 1 if you know that means you won’t have the cap space for one of PG or LeBron?

The benefit is you can lock in on a all NBA team level player (with the risk that he’s returning from a torn Achilles), that no matter what PG or LeBron decides, you come away this summer with a all star at the Center position so he fits very nicely with the existing roster.

So again, if you were Rob/Magic, would you guys commit to Boogie or pass and hope LeBron/PG decide to team up in LA?

    Hell no.

I am not dealing with another player that is trying to come back from an achilles injury. I watched Kobe try to come back and it was so painful to watch him not be the same player he was before.

Let the Pelicans re-sign Boogie. He's not ever going to be the same player IMO...so I don't want to deal with that headache.

I would much rather sign PG13, re-sign Randle, and keep the remaining cap space for 2019 when other superstars like Butler, Kawhi, Thompson, etc become free agents. I'm not dealing with a post-achilles Cousins no matter how good he was before. If he wants to come here, he'll come at a discount. I'm not offfering the max to him.

Pelicans seem better without him. He hasn’t been a proven winner yet, has sour attitude, leads league in technicals, he’s a big guy coming off a major injury to a young team that wants to run and gun.

His skill set is tantalizing for sure, but I think Maginca go for a sure thing vs a big risk in a max contract

My first phone call is to PG, if you get a commitment from him it basically makes the rest of FA that much easier.

Yep ... I would add this : You can't say no to elite/legendary talent such as Lebron . I think some Lakers fans may not understand it or think it's easy because we had it non stop except for 5 years between 1980-2013 with Magic , Kareem then Shaq and Kobe .

There is no guarantee this streak will continue . It's a rarity, REALLY

The " all in on the youth movement" is nonsense to me .
