Actually it's not complicated at all.

+/- it's calculated as whether your team or the opposing team outscores the other while that player is on the court.

Kuz at -12 makes sense considering, he's not a great defender and the Pels went on their runs when Kuz was on the court.

It doesn't matter if Kuz makes 10 straight points for us at a 50% clip and is our leading scorer if the other team is going back the other way and scoring at a 75% clip.

Of course fans will look at Kuz keeping us in the game, shooting at an efficient clip and leading our team in scoring, but if his team defense on the other end leads to missed rotations, box outs and poor close outs, then his net effect on the court is a negative, since the other team is outscoring us at an even more efficient clip. Fans are understandably upset at IT, but they're validated cause dude was a -7 and a large party of that is cause he had 6 turnovers.

I know the stat doesn't tell the whole picture, but it does tell part of the story and has a decent correlation to a player's impact. For instance, in all but 2 of our victories this season, BI had been a net positive for each of our victories. On the flip side, when we lose, in all but 3 games, BI has been a net negative in those loses. Seeing what we're missing (ie eyeball test) with him on the pine tells us alot of course, but his +/- data confirms just how much we miss his impact on the floor.

Still Weez, you're in good company cause a reporter brought up Aldridge's +/- impact and Pop didn't want to hear it haha. Respect Pop to the fullest, but this one time, I disagree with him...imho +/- does matter asked does tell us something about the player. For example, this year is one of the worst +/- ratings Bron has had in his entire career. His defense is absolutely horrid and fans could point to a fall off due to his age. I think it has to do with him carrying that team offensively cause no Ky, Love/IT have been hurt, roster turnover at the deadline, etc. His usage rating is higher than usual and it's cause he's focusing way too much on offense and resting on D.

+/- is how the team scored while you were on the floor.

With (x) player on the floor, the Lakers outscored the opponent by 5 points.
    +/- would be +5

When (y) player came in off the bench, the Lakers were outscored by 10 points.
    +/- would be -10

It’s wildly inaccurate if you look at it on a game by game basis because there are 4 other players on the floor affecting the outcome. Do they play well together? Were starters playing against bench players or vice versa?

Overall I think it’s a worthy stat in the big picture, but like all stats, it has its flaws.

LLLLL lovers always loved the stat because he typically led the league in +/-. But this year when he was dead last for awhile, suddenly “it’s not so accurate”

Edit: looks like two of us were posting s response at the same time

Giving up so many points and losing to a team which played the 2 nights before was (at least) as embarrassing as Lonzo shooting .

Defense was inexcusable. The effort and energy was inexcusable. I'm getting very sick of having to rely on Thomas. The brief stretches when he's competent (small stretch in the 2nd?) are not worth his inability to be consistent and focused. He takes a lot of bad shots and turns the ball over way too much. Pope starts the game hot, tries to keep it going but Thomas forgets how to pass him the ball.

But honestly a team with its 3rd game in 3 days and we can't ratchet up the energy against them? That's bull****. These guys need to want to win every single night. The only guys I see who wanted to win more than anything last night were Lonzo and Lopez. Randle close there, but I want to see him angrier all the time. He's our engine and when he's not burning hot, the team isn't burning hot.

BI and Hart - they are extremely important in what we do out there and they are good at it. Where do we miss them the most? Defensively. BI, while not great/disciplined, is better than what we are trotting out there presently; Hart is is an animal and can switch with great effectiveness.

Hopefully, they are back soon. We need them...

80 F****** points in the paint when we knew their outside shooting was going to struggle with tired legs after they played 5 games in 6 nights.

The refs. I don’t know where they found these guy, but they should send them back. These guys aren’t qualified to call rec league, let alone the NBA. #15 especially should be ashamed of himself, and his wife and kids should be embarrassed.

i will say that a) they still have marc gasol and we don't and b) they had to be a little motivated after that shellacking. still, though, you don't want to have to come from behind against a team that's making the sixers look like they were trying.
