But the first episode was all 60s and race relations. 84 was first time we met in the 80s and wasn't covered until episode 2. 2 hours to set up the 80s rivalry. Don't get me wrong, part 2 was amazing television, even though we lost. And part 3 was great, but if you devote 2 hours on the 60s and 70s, you have to cover the last 2.

I didn't realize Magic actually asked for a trade when he was upset with Westhead. I guess that's where Kobe got it from lol.

It was huge news too. Coach was fired real quick. Briefly touched on in the doc, but the first coach crashed on his kids bike, so asst took over and won the title. Magic wanted him gone, so he was fired. West was announced as co-coach with Riley and West took the mic and said Riley was coach. I think West sat on the bench for 10 games and then stopped (I could be wrong on that part).

This is so good, there's so much I didn't know. I also have more understanding of Jerry's fatherly relationship with Magic and I'm impressed with the early 80s 76ers, they faced the Lakers 3 times from 80-83.

And he decides to end his career with the Clippers? (I know this is speculation but with everything vital happening for them soon I imagine we'll find out soon if true)

83 Sixers were the best team I ever saw. Won 67 during the season and went 12 - 1 in the playoffs after Moses Malone said they'd go "fo-fo-fo." He was off by 1 game. They were a machine.

I agree they spent too long on it but they needed to set the stage a bit. I'd say they should have cut some of that back and given Kobe and Garnett more time.

Boom. The Balmer thread just announced it. That sucks. He was under contract with GS through July but clearly they'll let him leave early for Jerry to be involved in the draft and FA.

Frustrating. Mr West deserves better than the Clippers.

Or simply add a part four which could've aired tomorrow.

With Doc running the show he's gonna be more of a consultant IMO.

Part 3 ruled. Redemption!! I remember watching or listening to Chick on radio every single game of the 1987 season. That was my favorite. Was cool to hear it was Byron's and I think Magic's favorite season as well. Beating the C Bags was the icing on the cake. What a phenomenal year and team.

Yes it would have been cool to have the reboot of the rivalry with 2008 and 2010 that they only touched on. But hey, they should just make a fourth one and show it!

Did they say the C Bags won more than half of their titles when there were less than 10 teams in the league ? LOL

the lakers have more titles during the modern era, which for me starts with the NBA-ABA merger in '76

    lakers have 10 since '76, C Bags have 4

Great documentary that brought me back to many emotions I had as a teen watching this series. Wished they would've done more with the 2008 and 2010 series though. Game 7 in 2010 was a classic.

Something else I tweeted, but neglected to mention in this thread:

Still have much love for player B-Scott. Both the high-flying Showtime version, and the old 3-point shooting Kobe mentor. Blocking his coaching & potshots at Russ out of my memory, which will get easier with time.

I'm watching part 1 right now on the espn app. LOL at the new kids on the block cornball being the narrator for those guys while we got one of the all time greatest emcees in Ice Cube narrating for us. Another win for LA.

Great history lesson for young Lakers fans like myself. Born in '92 so I didn't experience the rivalry until 2008-2010, disappointed we didn't get more of that run in this 30 for 30.

just finished watching all 3 parts

they should have gone 3-0 against boston in the finals that decade. C Bags win in '84 was the definition of luck

but hey, 2 out of 3 ain't bad

Sorry 80's rivalry was EPIC. The showdown in 2008 and 2010 were minor next to those.
