This. Plus why didn't they do it while fixing his tibia?

Was the foot with screw on the same leg that fractured? If yes good question. If not probably no sense in having two bum legs at the same time.

I thought I read that over time the foot injury had healed not quite flush, so it would create additional torque over time - might've been okay, but it might not've been. I'll look for the article.

BTW, Randle explicitly denied that this was true:
    http://espn.go.com/nba/draft2014/st...-worried-julius-randle-improperly-healed-foot

In July the Lakers admitted some concerns:
    http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/...rookie-julius-randle-foot-examined-precaution
"If he has the (corrective) surgery, would miss six months"

    Here it is!
    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/julius...cruel-blow-to-crumbling-lakers-154552606.html
    "Bone had rotated slightly"

There's a way to understand this:
Doctors see that the bone has rotated slightly, but they say it's probably okay. Some see this as "there's a problem," but Julius sees it as "it's okay." Lakers see both sides, go for letting him play, then it eventually makes sense to do the surgery.

Or perhaps it rotated after the initial rounds of checks (but then the concerns make less sense).

The reason for a rod over a screw is that the screw is loose fitting and not connected to the bone. It fits over and around the bone making it possible to dislodge and cause discomfort.

A rod inserted into the bone itself provides basically the same function as a bone itself just like a person getting a metal plate in their skull to replace broken skull fragments. A rod was inserted into Julius's foot to form a more natural fix to his fracture. The rod is much less likely to form a problem in the future because it's much less likely become dislodged.

Julius's tibia got the same treatment and the same rod.

Yeah that sure as hell ain't happening. Isn't Ronnie Price in the same deadline? Or not? Would suck to do it to him too after leaving it all on the floor every single game and stepping his game up when the opportunity came. And brutal as well when he just took a sledgehammer elbow to the eye socket and nose, and "bled out" on the floor [IMG] without writhing around in agony like a little LeBr.....errrr......puss [IMG], not even freaking grabbing the area, propped on his forearms prone on the floor. GRIT. Mamba. Steve Black. Bynum on one leg. We need him this year.

I don't know where I can find the clip but it was really cool to see the Behind the Scenes video of Randle with his family in Dallas at his mom's brand new home the day after Christmas. This was shown on the brand new episode of Backstage Lakers.

lol Randle giving his family gifts and didnt even wrap them up. Just walked outside to his car, got them out, walked back into the house, and gave them away. Bigtime Dallas Cowboys fan too.

Nice. RT @billoram: Julius Randle at Lakers shoot around on stationary bike. Says he’ll be out of boot on right front on Monday.

    Oh. Yeah.

I want to see some footage of the kid working hard to get back. He's one of the few bright lights left in this season even if he's not playing.

Ah, a pinhole of light in what at first appeared like a seemingly inescapable tunnel of darkness.
