Maybe something other than "Huh" would have been a more polite way to express the surprise of you saying the center position was the biggest area of need next year (aside from SG if Nick moves).

When you say a center who can shoot are you including the 3 ball? Neither Zu nor Moz would be that player or should be spending much time out there with our rim protection and rebounding being major concerns. But both can shoot the 2 and Zu especially looks to be a 5 that's going to have a great touch out to the 3 as needed or even the occasional 3 if given the green light. With his demonstrated willingness to come into the facility on his own time and being at the top of the list in that regard I expect significant improvements from him in all areas they have him working physically and skills wise by start of the season next year.

Neither Withey nor Pachulia shoots the 3 and Monroe should be out of the question with our bigs situation.

But then you also in another post used the term "shooting big" which wouldn't have made me blink if you're including stretch 4 and off the bench utilization. Or if Black could be turned in a trade to somehow upgrade to a better small ball center option who could also shoot Js well and even the 3 ball.

i like mack on a low-dollar deal. good third guard with russell and clarkson already in the fold. solid backup pg. i don't like george hill on this roster at the price he'll fetch; plus, his injuries concern me.

patrick patterson is unrestricted, and toronto's going to have to pay ibaka. he might be gettable. he'd be a good fit, i think.

I don't think we need a 5 who can shoot the three, but it would be nice. We have no one who plays the 4 or 5 who can shoot the three. That's really a recipe for failure in today's NBA. I'm thinking of a 4/5 situation to help us be a better team. If Randle is our starting 4, we have no defense at the 4, we have little to no three-point shooting, too.

If we had a defensive 4, I could get on board with Zu.
If we had a shooting 4, I could get on board with Black.
If we had a solid team all-around, I think Mozgov would be a solid fit.
We have none of those. So here are my reasons for listing those guys:

Withey: He's a bench player or I don't want him. He doesn't shoot outside much, but his %s outside are excellent: 55% from 10-16 feet, 44% from 16 to the arc.
Monroe: We'd have to move someone, or I don't want him. But he's a down low scoring presence like few in the league. He's also a decent rebounder, and he's something of an iron man. I wouldn't mind adding him, especially if we were able to move a big and add one of our fantasy wings. But he's not a priority.
Pachulia: Clearly a platoon player at this point in his career (if he hasn't always been that). He has never made more than 5.5m in a season, so he may be available for less than Tarik Black. That's crazy to me. He's a legit defender who can hit the shot out to 16 feet.

I don't see us addressing our needs at the 5, to be honest, which is one of the strongest reasons I'm in favor of making a move at the 4 instead. This means moving Julius.

This has probably been asked a lot already, but does anyone know exactly how much cap room we'll have to work with?

I was under the impression we wouldn't have enough for a max contract since we don't really have any big expiring contracts coming off the books.

If we do have room for a max, are we generally assuming we won't have a chance on some of the top free agents like Hayward or Griffin?

I won’t fight over positions here. Some guys might play different spots more frequently, etc. I’m just going by the listings on whichever site I found them on.

    Gordon Hayward +9 (MAX)
    Otto Porter Jr. +4 ($17M)
    PJ Tucker -6 ($12M)

I suppose this goes without saying, but at those price tags, I'll take Hayward, but I don't want either of those other guys, even if I think they'd be solid adds.

We have, assuming no roster changes besides Ennis expiring, nearly 82 million in contracts. Cap holds will make that just about 83 million. Nick Young expiring would get us to 77ish million. The cap is set at 103 million next summer. That gives us 26 million or so in cap space without maneuvering at all.

The maximum contracts will be roughly:
    0-6 years- 24 million
    7-9 years- 29 million
    10+ years- 35 million

We could get to 29 million easily by waiving Tarik Black. We could get to 35 million by stretching (or finding an otherwise route of dumping) Deng.

Julius is starting to look kinda nice with his 3 point stroke and is knocking them down now every so often. Whole new ball game with the influx of ultimate Laker winning confidence just signed up to help him keep it going. As we've always said if he can hit a decent % from 3 to keep them honest look the hell out. I think he still has it in him to get considerably better with the shot. Form looks OK to good to me. What do the shooting mechanics specialists here think?

    Center
Greg Monroe +8 ($18M, but half of the guys in his neighborhood got max; two of the three who didn’t were old; He’s MAX.)
Zaza Pachulia +3 (Got $3M last year at +4; he’s now a year older, a little bit less good, but took a cut to chase a ring. I’d put him at $6M for next season on the market.)
Jeff Withey +0 ($4M, but he’s younger, so he may receive a shorter deal at up to $7.5M per season)

He's hit 8 on the season, so I'd be cautious about thinking he's got it going. Even if he can hit 33% of his threes (which he hasn't shown he can), I just don't see him being a good fit on a good team with the money we've sunk into Deng and Mozgov. When it comes time to extend Randle, how much do you offer him?

I agree. Its a difficult line to walk and I know we need to give Luke talent, but 2018 FA is where its at.

I don't think he will want to come because he wants to chase a championship, but JJ Redick would be who I think would be ideal out of that SG pool this off-season. We'd give Russell the kind of shooter he needs and the consistency.

i'm not sure i'm seeing any scenario in which it makes sense to do anything but dumpster dive in FA this summer. if we keep the pick, you look to improve via trade (maybe two). if not, i think you basically brace for another year of "development" (read: actual tanking in a year when you actually own your pick).

I personally agree but the way Magic and Rob talk makes me think they're going to be more aggressive than that.

Rob said as much. He said, 'we're going to be aggressive.'

Plus, are we going to go through another missed season of missing the PO's next season?I don't think so.

Everything and everybody are in play IRRESPECTIVE if we keep our pick or not...

    All IMO

I want Hayward. Unless we get him I had just as soon develop the young guys we have left. Paul George will be a Laker this summer. I hate to see any young guys go but it is inevitable. Please not Zu or Ingram. Oh yes, I want Ball in the draft. Well on the way.

terrifying, given the FA landscape. aggressive in trades? i'm down. but that means a dramatic shift in team building.

I think it's likely both. I strongly suspect we make a big play for George this summer if we keep our pick. It just smells like that's the move.

If God is an NBA fan he/she will let us keep our pick # 1 or 2 to finally pull the Lakers franchise up to fair / even after the egregious wrongs done by Stern with CP3 and Gilbert being gifted also against all odds with the picks the Cavs came up with after LeBronz took his talents to the "super team" in Miami.

that one makes perfect sense, and may be followed by other dominoes. i just don't want them going balls out to sign the big name FAs again. none are likely or even good fits.

our best FA signings of late were end-of-FA-season guys: lou, bass, ed davis. there's always someone left out in the cold. bring them in or sit on the cash for better use later. my only gripe with bass and davis was the one-year deal. if you have enough cash, you can probably hammer out a multi-year deal in that same situation.

i don't even see a clear mozgov/deng (seems like good fit and should thus overpay early) candidate. maybe patterson? then again, we got totally burned on that last time (still think the general concept was sensible).

nba god would have given us towns or simmons. there's not one in this draft. maybe nba god will save us later. s/he does still owe us. BIG.
