beware of spurs role players. they seldom replicate their success elsewhere. if the spurs let a guy walk, you don't want him.

I love KCP and he would be great for us. I also think Ron Jeremy loves him too and will try to keep him.

rodg: why would kcp take a 1-year deal? he'll get full max offers, imo. allen crabbe got near it. let that sink in...

also, i hate one-year deals, unless they're for aged-out vet mentors. if things go well, you have no advantage in keeping your guy (see: ed davis). if i were a gm, i'd never offer a deal that a player could get out of after a year unless they were super old and i didn't expect them to be with me beyond the next season.

I think we'll see that this was a year of overspending, but I don't know. He'd be best served by signing a three-year deal with an option on the fourth, opting out, and re-signing at the higher rate.

That Crabbe deal makes no sense, by the way.

Can we sign Metta long term?

Because we need more mentor vets that don't play and have little game left.

What about locking up KCP - and either making him our SG of the future or making him the centerpiece of a pg trade?

i know you're joking, but mwp is exactly what 1-year deals are for.

i'm down for offering him as much as the lakers possibly can. he can defend, shoot, and occasionally make plays at the sg position. i'm in. i don't see why det doesn't match any offer, though. if he's a trade piece for george for the lakers, he is for them, too.

Pope is a frustrating player. He'll hit 6-7 3's in one game and go 2-12 the next. I'm sick of those players. We already got DLo, Ingram, and Clarkson for that crap!

Except he plays more defense than those three combined. And we need that right now, desperately.

    POINT GUARD
If we're adding a PG, I'd rather it be a lower salary, backup type. No one jumps out at me at present.

    SHOOTING GUARD
We could afford to add a legit starting SG, especially on the assumption that Nick Young leaves. Might have to choose between Snipers and Defenders.

    Big Money:
    Caldwell-Pope (Restricted)

    Less Big Money
    Sefolosha
    Tony Allen
    Tyreke Evans
    Redick

    SMALL FORWARD
Getting a bit crowded. I'd like to see Brewer with the team next year, but there are some excellent wings available.

    Big Money
    Gordon Hayward

    Not Big Money
    PJ Tucker
    Shabazz Muhammad

    POWER FORWARD
We could really use a PF who can shoot. One of the positions I'd be open to a new starter with the right situation, but the fact is that we have much bigger needs. So we'd need other dominoes to fall first.

    Big Money
Serge Ibaka - I wouldn't pay him max, so we likely don't get him.

    Less Big
    Ersan Ilyasova
    JaMychal Green

    Not Big Money
    Amir Johnson

    CENTER
On paper, our biggest position of need (until Nick Young leaves).

    Big Money
    Greg Monroe

    Less Big Money
    Nerlens Noel
    Zaza Pachulia

If I was the Lakers FO, I'd be extremely conservative this summer; I don't think they will, though.

@trodgers, what do you think of Dion Waiters?

I'm worried about tying up too much money for when it comes time to extend guys.

Waiters is probably going to make bank. He's basically the best Nick Young could ever hope to be; right? :)

I don't think we will extend everybody; I am convinced some of these guys will by then....

I think Center is pretty well covered. I think with Zu's growth, Moz, and Black, we're pretty solid there. Knowing everyone still needs to develop, it's doubtful that's a spot I spend much money barring an interesting trade.

i think the lakers' biggest position of need will be defined by the trade made this summer (i think there will be one that involves at least one of the young core, if not more). right now, the lakers can argue they have a young player who is or can grow into a starter at all but sg (sorry clarkson).

as i've said before, i really don't like the FA market this summer. i'd honestly be fine with just rolling in with the same basic roster next year, given realistic constraints. i think young is better--and likely cheaper--than many of the sg options.

i'm VERY interested in getting a pf who can shoot (i wanted marvin williams last summer for this purpose). ilyasova would be a good fit. don't know why he bounces around so much, he seems to help his team wherever he is. jamychal green is interesting, too, and memphis has a lot of cash tied up in a few players.

but yeah, i think a shooting big is kind of a must if the team wants to win more games. doesn't have to be the starter, but it needs to be a guy you can play when teams are packing the paint on you.

I noted that if Nick goes,SG is the clear need. I'm not sure I can count on Zu for next season, so if we run with Randle at 4, we need a center who can shoot. That's not a knock on our center rotation. We have two roughly average bigs who are borderline starters. But without shooting elsewhere their effectiveness is limited. Need a SG, need a shooting big, and might have to part with some young dudes to make it happen. JC is first on my list. Then Randle.

First in a series of posts, with player values based on last season's contracts.

    Point Guards

Approximate value based on last season’s salaries.
    George Hill +0 $15m (max – age)
    Brandon Jennings -7 $9M (1/12.5)
    Trey Burke -10 $3M (1/5.5)
    Shelvin Mack -12 $2.3M (Out of NBA/$5m)
TYLER ENNIS -14 $1.8M (Out of NBA, Min, $5m)

I'd be okay with paying Hill that kind of money for two seasons, independent of our roster concerns. I'd be happy to take a chance on Burke at that salary, even for a few seasons, even at 3/$10M. His early career performance might earn him more. I'd be okay with Ennis or Mack at those prices. Jennings may earn more, but he's been a far less effective player over the past two seasons, and I'd see him coming here to be a backup. I think there are just better options. A final warning: PG salaries weren't nearly as insane as salaries at a lot of other positions, so brace yourselves.
