I prefer Fultz but I just see us taking Ball even if we get the first pick.

With the Suns victory today and Lakers loss to the C Bags, we are the 2nd worst team in the NBA behind Brooklyn.

I hate losing to Boston and I hated that game last night. Tank or no.

At this point we are clearly "out rostered". Great or even super great game from the kids and D leaguers, where they are now, doesn't beat average performance from better rosters. Not sure why we expect anything different.

...it's been difficult the last three seasons dealing with this. I don't think this franchise has endured a stretch like it.

We lost to the Hornets because they had Kemba and we didn't. I can accept that.

We lost to Boston because nobody showed up. I cannot stand this. I don't care how young our players are, they get paid millions to go play basketball. If they're not going to come to work ready to play hard, then I have no reason to support them.

I "think" I see the guys trying hard. Boston also has a much better and more balanced roster at this point plus Thomas about to set a C bag record for scoring average. You're probably looking with a finer and more nuanced eye though.

I'm not waiting another 3 years for a draft pick to develop. You keep the pick; you trade it for PG.

Well OK. Except if we against all odds can get Ball in the draft or trade without gutting the team Magic wants this guy bad. See's a guy "approaching" but of course not as good as himself coming out. Hmmm ROFY or Magic ...who's got the juice.

I'm not advocating gutting this team, but I damn sure am not reluctant to give up any of our assets for an impact piece this summer.

    Are you?

Just saying if chance to get Ball seems like Magic will because he's big on that kind of passing first talent. Can't do it in the draft (?), he may prioritize giving up that asset or assets for Ball rather than PG and take his chances PG wants to come next summer?

1.) We're not giving up any assets to get Ball. The only way Ball is coming here is if we keep our pick.

2.) Magic wants to make a splash this summer. I can't see him sitting still doing nothing; and plus, the MAIN REASON why you trade for PG this summer is because you can get his BIRD Rights and have financial leverage more than any other team and start to plan your cap space for the summer of 2018. IMO.

    Pick Swaps

    • 2017 — Owed first-rounder from Houston Rockets (Lou Williams)
    • 2017 — Owe first-rounder (top-three protected, unprotected in 2018) to Philadelphia 76ers (Steve Nash, Brandon Knight).
    • 2018 — Owed second-rounder from Denver Nuggets (Randy Foye, Kirk Hinrich, Jose Calderon).
    • 2019 — Owed second-rounder from Chicago Bulls (Jose Calderon).
    • 2019 — Owe first-rounder (unprotected) to Orlando Magic (Dwight Howard). If a first-rounder not sent to Philadelphia in 2017, pick to Orlando converts to 2017 and 2018 second-rounders.
    • 2019 — Owe second-rounder to Cleveland Cavaliers (Roy Hibbert, Rakeem Christmas), may go to Portland Trail Blazers (Anderson Varejao).

@therealdeal the biggie is the lottery pick this summer, right. If we keep it, our collections of picks and nice players isn't that bad. I think we can start putting together trade packages this summer for impact piece(s).

    Thoughts?

I agree completely, it's why the Lakers have made no bones about tanking this year. The key is trying to find a way to tell the players to keep working hard while the organization wants to lose. Those two things seem to be such opposites that I can see why it would affect young players. If I'm someone like D"Angelo especially I look at what the office has done and say, "wait, you want me to lose so you can keep your draft pick and either replace me with Ball or maybe trade me? F*** you guys." Lou Williams hinted at that earlier this year. Still, it's up to Magic and Luke to make the kids understand that a) this is a business, b) if you look like crap right now you INCREASE the likelihood we're going to try to trade you, and c) the organization wants/needs the young guys to improve even if the record doesn't. I'm not sure any of our kids has the heart to understand the situation without taking it personally. /rant

If we keep our pick, we end up with the ability to put together a wide variety of packages AND a potential max slot in FA.
    Top 3 pick
2019 1st (I would rather not trade it if we don't have to, but it's on the table again potentially) and 2019 2nd
    Hou 1st
Randle, Russell, Ingram, Nance Jr. (who could be a sell high candidate with his health issues), Zubac, Clarkson, and Black

That's a lot of nice pieces to build around. As upset as I am at the kids, I fully appreciate that they could still round out to be good players in this league. It's still absolutely possible that they end up being not just NBA players, but really good NBA players. That being said, we've encouraged a culture of losing for so long that the kids feel like tainted meat at this point. It seems to me we've sucked the heart out of them. If we can put together a package of these kids to go get a Jimmy Butler (Randle, Clarkson, Hou 1st?) and then sign someone like Griffin, we'd still be left with enough assets to try to go get Paul George out of Indiana. Does Russell, Black, Nance Jr., future 1st get it done? How about Top 3 instead of Russell?

A ton of conjecture I know, but if we keep the pick the avenues open wide for us to rebuild quickly. If we lose the pick, we're looking at 1) a completely wasted season and 2) a potentially wasted season in '18 because what FA is going to want to come here this summer without knowing there's another star on the way?

Agree. The organization and the players seem to have a created a complete dichotomy on their hands. That's where Luke comes in and tries to keep them focused, but that's a difficult job when he's making moves that are completely in favor of tanking games unintentionally.

So what do you do if you're a young player? I'd know I'd like for them to keep working hard showing their worth and doing everything can on the basketball court to win games, but at this point, we've been so inconsistent and have showed so much lack of heart so many times this season, it makes me more determined to package up a few of the key young pieces and send them off for a player that can come in and help us restore respectability back to this franchise.

I like the various scenarios you brought up and the number of options we have; this is the benefit of having accumulated assets and now the cupboard isn't only bare, but now we have enough assets to seemingly make a move provided we keep our pick.

I'd start with Paul George. We need a star. Once we get a top 15 player on this roster, then others will flock and come back to Los Angeles. Does that mean you gut your whole team? I don't think so. You have to start somewhere, though. Trade for him and his Bird rights, and start to plan on building the team around him.
