If Lebron said it, it would've been "what a leader! Not afraid to give them tough love." But it's Kobe. We know how it goes.

its absolutely true. Having to listen to Mark and Jeff talk about it for over 20 minutes was annoying as hell. Jeff "In all my years of coaching I have never seen this" and then Mark "Its a sign that no one said anything. Not his teammates, Mitch, the coaches no one."

Then they harped on how he couldn't talk cause he isn't in practice. This guy is 36 and playing in the top 5 in minutes in the LEAGUE in his 19th year. If it was Lebron it would be "he can do it because he leaves it all on the court every game doing whatever it takes to win."

After all those minutes who was the one on the floor crashing into the scorers table to get the loose ball? Kobe and his old man counter part Timmy. The media is a joke.

    • Nick Young is allowing 0.63 Points per Shot – currently 2nd in the league.
    • Young is bringing the energy against his opponents – contesting over 49 percent of their shots.
    • These Vantage metrics are better than some of the most notable defenders in the NBA.
Nick Young has long been noted as a pure scorer, getting knocked by critics for his defensive play (or lack thereof). This offseason, he set out to change that.

The self-styled Swaggy P has completely transformed his defensive play in the early going this season. He’s now turning on the pressure, doing a fantastic job keeping a hand in his opponent’s face. This transformation began last season, when Swaggy P was put in the spotlight for the first time as he joined the Lakers. First-year head coach Byron Scott, a great defensive mind, took notice of Young’s potential.

“I liked how he played and how he was giving full effort on the defensive end, and I really love his energy,” said Scott during an interview this summer. “He cared about winning. He changed his whole persona, what people thought of him. I’d never seen him play defense before.”

Swaggy P’s work this offseason has shown a major payoff. Despite the Lakers’ abysmal record, Nick Young has played phenomenally on defense. According to Vantage Sports, the Lakers guard is allowing an amazing 0.63 Points per Shot – second in the entire league, behind only Andre Roberson. His opponents haven’t been able to knock down shots at all – Young is holding them to under 29 percent shooting. It must be tough to shoot when your defender is on you like glue. Swaggy P is Contesting+ over 49 percent of his opponents’ shots – 4 percent more than the average player.

Nick Young may not have passed the eye test for many viewers, but Vantage Sports has a different take on the guard’s defense. According to the table above, Swaggy P has been playing better defense than some of the most notable defenders in the league.

This doesn’t mean that the 29-year-old is the best defender in the league but probably that he's the most underrated.

Despite his amazing stats, Young hasn’t been guarding the league’s best. When a player gains the reputation as a defensive monster, like Tony Allen has, he is usually paired up against his opponent’s best scorer. Because of this, a defender’s stats can be somewhat skewed, having to defend a team’s best scorer every single night. This hasn’t been the case for Nick Young (yet).

So while Swaggy D may not have arrived as an elite defender just yet, Vantage Stats tell a story about his improvement that has been buried by the Lakers' overall lack of success. If he can keep these metrics up, this could shape up to be one of the biggest single-season defensive transformations in NBA history.

I've been saying this for a long time and my appreciation has only increased. Nice to see some stats that backup my eye test.

Young has become a really good defender.

Last season Lakers fans started saying this about Swaggy, and I confess I'd never noticed. Then I started watching...and sure enough he's a quality defender. Has been for awhile now. Thanks for the metrics to drive home the point.

Man, those are some elite numbers. See what a little passion and a lot of athleticism can do on the defensive end? Unbelievable. Young is currently playing the best basketball on this team. Except that he can't pass at all. Well, I guess you can't have everything, especially for that price. Shoots 43% for 3, 90% on FTs, best 4-point guy in the league ;), plays D.

I wonder if he will ever get the credit he deserves since he doesn't get a ton of flashy blocks and steals.

It's such a good point - and I think more and more people are going to look to these flashy stats as indicators of goodness. It's one bad thing fantasy sports has done: everyone cares about an RB's yards, but they don't care about the FB who throws the lead block. Shot blockers and ball thieves are heralded as good defenders, but guys who deny ball and force tough shots against opposing best players don't get all that love.
