It might not be a bad plan. I mean, there are going to be some solid free agents in 2020. For example, Luol Deng and Timofey Mozgov.
Okay, since I'm assuming you're serious, here goes: If I'm the Pelicans, I'm looking at: Holiday/Frazier Williams/Moore/Hield Deng/Cunningham Davis/Jones Asik/Ajinca -So, my main question is, "How do I find minutes for Hield while still getting the benefit of Lou?" It might be a step in a good direction for the team, and it would buy them a season's worth of goodwill with AD If I'm the Lakers, I'm thrilled and do this in a second; I'd even throw in a second rounder to make it happen: Russell/Huertas/Calderon Young/Clarkson Ingram/Hill Randle/Nance/Black Zubac/Mozgov + that pick gives us some flexibility in pursuing other options. If I'm the Lakers, DONE. If I'm the Pelicans, I want to hear more offers.
I was a big fan of Hield this past draft but he hasn't really been that great this year (8.6ppg 2.9rpg 1.3apg 39.3fg% 36.8 3fg%). He's 23, so it's not like he has the benefit of being young/raw, like Ingram, and you can guarantee a notable 2nd year leap. If the plan is to keep AD happy, getting an instant impact guy like Lou is probably higher priority than minutes for Hield in the short-term. Lou is a FA after next season, so really just buys Hield another year to develop. That said, I was being semi-serious. I was mostly trying to come with a quasi-realistic trade idea where the Lakers get that 2018 1st round pick and setting up a scenario where that 1st rounder is just re-routed back to them in a trade offer for Anthony Davis next summer.
Sadly there won't be any room for them due to the fact that Magic will have already brought 7 superstars here via trade and FA.
Seriously. That whole thing was about as self-indulgent as Beyonce's "performance" last night on the Grammy's. I blame my wife for making me sit through that. Lebron ended up with 2 titles and 2 more finals appearances. In the context of this discussion, if Magic gets us 2 superstars and 2 lesser stars, great!
What about this one? The reason I want a first rounder is to package to move Mozgov or Deng. Seriously. Salary Dump 1. Pekovic - MIN Lakers trade Mozgov and a 1st, Minnesota trades Pekovic and a second. Deng/Mozgov + 1st rounder + Randle for an all-star. Get a Star 1. Cousins - SAC This one gets complex, but we might be able to give them a sizable salary dump in the process of giving them Randle for Cousins. Lakers ship out Deng, Calderon, and Randle, plus the first they acquire (from Lou Williams). Sacramento sends out Gay and Cousins. Lakers: Russell/Huertas Young Ingram/ Cousins/Nance/Black Zubac/Mozgov -Lakers have their big star. Sacramento gets their replacement for Cousins, and they add a first rounder. SAC's current contract trend is 95M this season, 83M next, and 17M the third year. After this trade, they'd be at about the same this year, but they'd find an additional 7M of flexibility in year 2, allowing them to make a max offer, it seems. 2. Hayward - UTH -This is a possibility, but it's complicated by Hayward's player option.
