There was either a lack of communication/understanding between Luke and the FO prior to this sign or (most likely) Lakers didn't know Black and Zu would be serviceable players at the center position .

Throw in Julius ( Nance/T-Rob at rare times) as a small ball center and we are all banging our head against the wall for the Moz acquisition .

revgen bringing logic. our at-the-rim d is bad because the back line is going one on two at the basket on every other trip (hat tip to julius's snoozin' a** and dlo's lollygagging around screens).

that's me. i'm not going to get into predicting the next three years. maybe biyombo tears an acl. what he is highly unlikely to do is develop the skill level and hoop iq to function in luke's offense, which is part of why mozgov was prioritized.

he hasn't been good, but replacing him with a comparable option would do jack squat. banking the cap space to spend it on next summer's mozgov would also have been a disappointing move.

there just weren't good ways to go. the lakers needed a center--if black or zubac were the #1 options, i think it would be worse right now.

anyway, the youngsters are the leaders now, and we have two guys in the starting lineup that either don't know or can't be bothered to play smart and play hard every night. blaming some stopgap vet signings is silly to me. we're seeing what depending upon youth to help get out of the cellar entails. minny and philly are seeing it, too (ironically, someone suggested that towns would hide moz's deficiencies, but i'm guessing close observers of the wolves this year would beg to differ...).

anyway, at the time i wanted the deal to be three years instead of four. same with deng. gotta live with it now.

btw, if i'm mad at the FO about something, it's the calderon/huertas acquisitions. we desperately need a defensive player at backup guard, if only to provide luke with a disciplinary option for russell and clarkson.

    Thank you, and Exactly.

For instance, the best defensive rating team in the league is the Jazz at around 101 as a team. Around 103 is average for a team.

Per Fiendish OC's twitter: Mozgov's has a defensive rating with Randle on the court of 107.9, and Mozgov's rating with Randle off the court jumps to 103.8

Randle's defensive rating with Mozgov's off the court is 121.5

The team defense is the problem (with Randle and Russel being the biggest problems IMO). Mozgov's defense is generally solid individually when he's not having to try to guard multiple players to make up for players missing their assignment.

Luke doesnt seem to agree with you then, why else is Moz min declining and we hardly ever see him in the 4th qtr?

How would you know if biyombo cant handle lukes system? Moz isnt exactly dominating out there. I saw plenty of easy buckets from Biyumbo screen and roll when we played Orl. And that's pretty much what is asked of Moz with the occasional jump shot. However even the stances of Moz backers cant say with a straight face that Moz will improve as a player given his age and career progression

Wait, so before, you said the stats are what matters, and the stats say Moz is terrible (which they never did BTW). Now I'm giving you stats proving my point about Mozgov's defense declining when he's on the court with Randle and having to cover for him,but now your answer is it's not about the stats anymore, it's about trying to figure out what Luke is thinking?

To answer your question, I don't know what Luke is thinking, an neither do you.

I did however give you some stats proving my point about Mozgov having to cover for Randle, verifying what I'm seeing on the court. Do the stats not matter to you anymore if they don't support your claim that Mozgov is a bad defender?

107 is terrible of course having randle out there without Moz is worse, hes already a bad defender who 6 9 playing Center, im gona use your "context excuse" now......you don't need to know what luke is thinking...its called common sense or logic, if the guy isnt effective on either ends of the floor you dont get minutes, period. You know we all have varying opinions, i understand your pt that Moz isnt the sole reason for our bad D and i AGREE but at the same time he has not improved it either over what hibbert did last yr, so overall a bad signing

You either didn't understand the stats, or are dodging it to not have to admit you were wrong. Moz's defense is at about league average when Randle isn't on the court. You can complain about his rebounding and shot blocking wanting more from him, because that is at least a legitimate complaint, but this notion that Mozgov is a bad defender is just imagined. He's average defensively, like I've said all along, as the stats bear out when he's not covering for Randle.

My "context explanation" is from actually watching the games, and seeing how plays go down. You know, actually watching and evaluating. And we do need to know what Luke is thinking. You still thought Moz was trash when he was playing big minutes, but now all of a sudden Luke's decision about how much he plays is important to you and makes a statement about Mozgov's play? Now you're just picking and choosing when it serves your argument.

Those two missed dunks and multiple mishandling of passes were pretty awful....

I liked the 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. The missed dunks and 4 TO's were not so nice.

    Movgov rebounds were really big.
I was thinking about buying his white jersey.
For some reason he seemed really stiff tonight.

Our D hasnt improved replacing hibbert with Mozgov, context all you want theres no arguing that. You brush off my def stats early in the season in favor of your "what i see" argument" but now want me to accept these medicore stats as soon some sort of vindication. Hes a bad defender, not horrid but bad none the less. Your stat using randle without moz is so misleading, i mean how do you expect the def rating to improve playing randle as C whens he already considered a poor defender at his pf spot? Well as for Luke argument, maybe hes starting to lose faith in Moz and has finally acknowledge maybe Moz wasnt the type of player he had envisioned

    Wrong!

""The entire league overall is on pace to have one of the highest average offensive efficiencies in its recorded history.

Whether that’s because of an influx of offensive talent, more three point shooting, or the innovations from coaches to counter the latest defensive trends, the bottom line is that teams are harder to defend than ever. Even in this environment the Lakers’ two most played lineups, the usual starting unit and the killer bench unit that has since been grounded by injuries, have managed defensive ratings of 103.3 (even after their recent shellacking by the Spurs) and 100.0 respectively. This is the equivalent of a league average defensive team and then the best defensive team in the league (Utah leads the league with a 101.2 rating). In contrast, the two most often played lineups last year had defensive ratings of 112.9 and 116.6, easily the worst marks for any lineups that got significant minutes that season. To look at this in another way, out of the top 50 lineups in terms of minutes played this season, the Lakers starters this season, who typically go against the best offensive units of other teams, rank 22nd, and the main Lakers bench unit (when healthy) ranks 15th."

For the 8 millionth time, you haven't provided any stats for Mozgov individually. I just did. It proves you are wrong, but I guess you're too deep now to admit it.

How is what I said wrong? I dont care about whats happening with the rest of the league, the point still stands, this LAKER D has NOT improved with replacement of Hibbert with Mozgov, you're just deflecting and using this increase in league offense as another way of excusing Mogoz. I did provide as team the pts allowed with Moz on and off the floor, this isn't an individual defender argument, he mans the paint and suppose to alleviate some of the pressure of the crappy peremiter defenders, which he hasn't. You're best argument here is that we paid a guy 16mill to be medicore....you can skew the stats in favor of your argument all you want, end of the day, this team is dead last in almost every statistical category in the league defensively, Moz plays a major part in that in regards to the paint fg% and the pts allowed in the paint
