It's okay to have conviction and faith in your religious beliefs. But I am strongly against putting someone in power whose idea of how the country should be ran is primarily based on religious principles.

Well obviously very religious people are guided by their faith as a cornerstone in everything they do and believe. I'm not saying religious people should be disqualified from holding office. Just keep your beliefs private and out of the political arena. Don't say "vote for me because I'm a Christian" or "I believe in policy X because Jesus said so". Again, it's fine if privately that's the truth. But as a politician, you better come at me with a secular and logical argument for why you want to enact policy X.

Savory, the question you proposed is worded very impartially. Being dedicated to religion doesn't automatically make your ideas for how the country should be ran more moral than other world views.

Overall, I think Pence's anti-LGBT beliefs are archaic and I also worry about having a president who is extremely Christian while we're fighting ISIS. Don't get me wrong, it's clear that a radical Islam is a plague to modern culture. But that's because radical Islamists are hateful and dangerous. Not because they're not Christians.

I recall hearing during the RNC some speeches from commanders who I had previously agreed with. People who came on news channels and argued strongly about identifying radical Islam as a threat to our national security. But then some of them came out at the RNC and kept bringing up Jesus in their arguments. That's scary. Don't make this a religious war.

I'm not looking to stir up a religious debate here in a political thread. But, just as an FYI. The ISIS issue IS a religious war. Not from our side or Europe's but from their side. ISIS is doing what they are doing strictly for religious reasons. Any approach to meeting the threat that leaves religion out of the consideration is missing the point entirely.

I agree completely. What I meant is that I don't want to see us making this a religious war from our side too.

Has Pence said that we should vote for him because he's a Christian? I haven't seen that. If he has, then I agree. That's the wrong reason to vote for someone.

I also agree that Republicans in general have missed the mark about where to draw the line. Their views on social issues towards gay, lesbian, queer, trans, etc have held them back in recent elections. Funnily enough Hillary shared those views not too long ago.

The Republican tie to Christianity is real although I think it's exaggerated a bit. I don't see any issue with voting for a devout Christian. I also wouldn't see an issue with voting for a devout Jew or devout Muslim as long as I agreed with their beliefs and what they stood for.

You are correct. It doesn't necessarily make it more moral. That's where the American public decides who's morals fall in line with their own. That's what is starting to scare me. If people hold Pence's religious views against him, like some people held Romney's (Christians held it against Romney because he as Mormon), but are willing to turn around and vote for someone like Hillary with her moral compass...that's a scary world. It's easy to say Pence's religious beliefs are a problem, until you ask yourself who is going to look after our kids fighting overseas. Who is going to think twice about sending them into harm's way? If you have a kid in the military and the choice needs to be made, do you want Pence or someone like Hillary or the other corrupt politicians? Switch out Christianity for Hinduism and someone who follows Ghandi, that person would be ripped to shreds as well despite likely being a much better person than Hillary. Some in our country have turned religion into a scarlet letter and somehow twisted the separation of church and state into this idea that our politicians need to be personally as free of religion as possible.

And for the record, Pence is not a religious nut. Rick Santorum you could make an argument for.

Trump has vowed to limit House members to a 6 year term and Senators to 12 as part of his broader plan to "drain the swamp" and reduce the amount of influence lobbyists have in Washington.

I'm not convinced that term limits are necessarily the answer. Incumbents at least have some autonomy from the political machines due to their name recognition among constituents. So they can afford to break the party line from time to time. Few younger senators and congressmen can do that except Rand Paul who's campaign was mostly crowdfunded.

What really needs to happen is meeting limits. Congress is basically open for business 5 days a week except for Federal holidays or the occasional recess period.

When the USA was founded, Congress never met 5 days a week. They'd meet every few months. Being a member of congress wasn't a "career". It was a public service position, similar to jury duty. Limit the amount of times Congress meets each year to 6 times a month and the size of the federal government shrinks along with the corrupt atmosphere. More power goes into hands of states and local governments.

^^ interesting take on this @revgen. I like what you're saying, but I still think term limits are needed. These people enter office rich and leave wealthy.

While many junior members are afraid to break ranks, I want those that will.

They'll still be wealthy working for the lobbyists after their short terms are up. I'm not convinced that "business as usual" will stop until the doors on the business say "closed".

Vote for junior members who aren't republican or democrat unless they are heavily crowdfunded like Rand Paul or Justin Amash. That's the only way they'll "break ranks" with the elite.

She still hold those beliefs according to the Wikileak emails where her staff is trying to figure out how to spin her real opinion on LGBTQ.

As things stand, I'd be terrified of that happening. More time off, just means more time to set up shady legislation, and buying votes through "hidden" favors and money.

Shady legislation is already being proposed and pushed regardless. The difference is they only have 6 days a month to push it through. Some legislation will be thrown out in order to meet work deadlines.

I liked the idea of them getting paid only AFTER they balance the freakin budget and quit spending money we don't have.

It's all pretend money anyways, so who cares?!!

    From Trump Gettysburg speech today:

    TRUMP'S ANTI-CORRUPTION TO-DO LIST

    1. Constitutional Amendment to impose term limits on members of Congress

    2. Hiring freeze on federal employees to reduce the workforce through attrition (not to include military, healthcare, or law enforcement)

    3. Requirement to eliminate two federal regulations for every new one

    4. Five-year-ban on White House and Congressional officials becoming lobbyists

    5. Lifetime ban on White House officials lobbying for foreign governments

    6. Complete ban on foreign lobbyists raising money for American elections (we know why this hasn't happened yet, and anyone else saying this I wouldn't believe, but since he was self-funded, I believe he can do it)

TRUMP'S PLAN FOR JOBS AND TRADE
    1. Renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement or withdraw from it

    2. Withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership

    3. Order the secretary of the treasury to label China a 'currency manipulator'

    4. Use U.S. and international laws to end foreign trading abuses that unfairly impact American workers

    5. Lift restrictions on the production of $50 trillion dollars’ worth of U.S. energy reserves including shale, oil, natural gas and coal

    6. Approve the Keystone XL pipeline project and other 'vital energy infrastructure projects'

    7. Cancel billions in payments to U.N. climate change programs and use the money to improve U.S. water and environmental infrastructure

TRUMP'S LAWS: BILLS HE WOULD PUSH IN HIS FIRST 100 DAYS
    1. 'Middle Class Tax Relief And Simplification Act':Economic plan designed to grow the economy 4 per cent per year and create 25 million new jobs. Involves tax cuts, trade reform, regulatory relief, lifting restrictions on energy production, and encouraging companies with offshore funds to bring them back to America.

    2. 'End The Offshoring Act': New tariffs on goods brought into the U.S. by American companies that relocate jobs outside the U.S.

    3. 'American Energy & Infrastructure Act': Uses public-private partnerships and tax incentives to generate $1 trillion in infrastructure investment over 10 years

    4. 'School Choice And Education Opportunity Act': Redirects education dollars to allow parents to choose any public, private, charter, magnet, religious or home school; ends the 'Common Core' federal standards; and expands vocational and technical education

    5. 'Repeal and Replace Obamacare Act': Replaces the Affordable Care Act with health savings accounts, removes barriers to purchasing health insurance across state lines, allows states to manage Medicaid funds and speeds up drug approval inside the Food and Drug Administration

    6. 'Affordable Childcare and Eldercare Act': Provides tax deductions for childcare and elder care and incentivizes employers to provide on-site childcare services

    7. 'End Illegal Immigration Act': Funds a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, 'with the full understanding that the country of Mexico will be reimbursing the United States'; establishes 2-year mandatory minimum federal prison sentence for illegally re-entering the U.S. after deportation, 5-year mandatory minimum for felons who illegally re-enter, and 5 years for coming back after multiple deportations; increases penalties for overstaying visas

    8. 'Restoring Community Safety Act': Creates a Task Force On Violent Crime, increases federal funding of police forces and boosts federal support for anti-gang prosecutions

    9. 'Restoring National Security Act': Eliminates the federal defense 'sequester' to restore military funding, guarantees veterans the option of private health care if VA facility wait times are long, institutes new defenses against cyber-attacks, and establishes new immigration screening based on 'values'

    10. 'Clean up Corruption in Washington Act': Enacts new ethics reforms affecting politicians and their staffers

Trump was the wrong answer to the right question. Hopefully 4 years of Hillary will be enough for us to ask the question a bit more seriously and answer it with something a bit more practical.

I still don't like 7, 8 sounds scary, and 9 doesn't address the VA problems it just puts a bandaid on them.

I think the concern is the country will be a very different place in 4-8 years after Supreme Court justices are appointed.

8 is something the government has been wanting for awhile. Federalized police force. I'm sure someone told Trump to put that in. Look at our small town police departments with tanks and humvee's. It's crazy. They're militarized. I'm not in agreement with that either. Scary, but it's happening, whether it's Trump, Hillary, or the next president.

Also reported in the Wallstreet journal i you don't trust the Trump camp (which you shouldn't):

    "
Trump camp: Report that Clinton ally helped FBI official's wife 'deeply disturbing'

    By Rebecca Savransky

Donald Trump's campaign called a political donation from Hillary Clinton ally Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) to an FBI official's wife "deeply disturbing," an aide said in a statement Monday.

“Last night’s revelation that close Clinton ally Terry McAuliffe authorized $675,000 to the wife of a top official at the FBI, who conveniently was promoted to deputy director, and helped oversee the investigation into Clinton’s secret server is deeply disturbing and calls into question the entire investigation," senior communications adviser Jason Miller said in a statement.
"The fact that this was allowed to occur shows either outright negligent behavior by the FBI or a level of corruption that is beyond belief. The FBI needs to fully address these issues as soon as possible.”

The report, published Sunday in The Wall Street Journal, said the Virginia governor's political action committee gave nearly $500,000 to the 2015 Senate campaign of Jill McCabe.

Jill McCabe is married to Andrew McCabe, who now serves as the deputy director of the FBI.

Andrew McCabe later helped to oversee the investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server while serving as secretary of State, according to the publication.

The report also says the Virginia Democratic Party raised $207,788 for Jill McCabe's campaign through mailers.

McCabe lost the election to Republican d*** Black.

"[McAuliffe] supported Jill McCabe because he believed she would be a good state senator. This is a customary practice for Virginia governors," a spokesman for the governor told The Wall Street Journal.

"Any insinuation that his support was tied to anything other than his desire to elect candidates who would help pass his agenda is ridiculous.”

The Republican nominee tweeted about the report late Sunday night."
