Durant has greatly tarnished his legacy even if he wins several titles with the Warriors. This move is fairly unprecedented as far as I know, to see the best player on the losing team in the conference finals join the team that eliminated him just a month later.

Trading for Westbrook doesn't make sense since we have to give up probably a good deal of assets when he will just walk from OKC in a year. However, there is one really important caveat: will the Lakers still have enough cap next summer for a max contract with all of the signings so far? I know I saw numbers saying we would be close, but not actually able to offer a max contract. Still, it might be fairly simple to trade one or two contracts to open up the cap next summer.

Westbrook should be the FIRST pick in EVERY fantasy team ;).

Of course it makes sense. I built a perfectly easy to understand argument why you move Russell. C'mon with that.

I'm not going to repeat why we should or shouldn't trade Russell specifically, but how confident are you that we have any shot at Westbrook next summer? Did this summer go so well that you think we've got a great shot now? I'm not saying we gut the team and leave ourselves without young players. If someone else wants to do that, I let them. I'm perfectly happy to rebuild slowly especially since GS is going to dominate the next half decade anyway. However, if all it takes is D'Angelo Russell/Lou Williams/one player not named Ingram I think it's worth a look. We have almost nothing going for us in FA. There's really no reason for Westbrook to come here next summer at all barring some sort of completely unreasonable development for the young players.

It'll be worth it to revisit this at the trade deadline and see where OKC and the Lakers are at. If the Lakers are competitive and a playoff team somehow, then sure let's just wait. If the Lakers are a 10th or 11th seed which is likely, then we should very seriously consider making the move.

Durant to GS? League effed. At least our season will be about progress, not about winning championships. I feel bad for all the other potential contending teams out there.

There is a lot of outlash against Durant right now online. Understandably so. But personally since we're not competing, I'm just intrigued to see what they can do.

When Lebron went to Miami, I desperately wanted him to fail. I don't feel any of that right now.

    I don't disagree with what you're saying, I just think it's worth considering. :D

Everyone just said no and let's get him in FA so quickly. I'm genuinely curious what those people think we can do to get Westbrook to consider us? We couldn't even get meetings this summer. Do we expect it to change that dramatically? Seems like insanity to assume things will change that dramatically. Heck like you said OKC has a decent team without Durant, better than the Lakers. So why leave?

Like I said though, it doesn't matter. OKC will not rush this decision. Let's see where we're at for the deadline. If the Lakers are competitive, then I wait and take a shot in FA. If we're not a playoff team or even in the running, then I call and make a solid offer and see what happens.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment out of this is that we didn't get a hilarious rant from OKC in comic sans :(

I have doubts about landing him in free agency too. Still would be tough to pull the trigger on that trade.

Stop hating people who haven't even met. Why did you hate Lebron for leaving to Miami? Why hate Lebron? C Bags, Spurs, Pierce, Ray Allen, I get. Lebron has no ties to Lakers lore or anything. Neither does Durant.

I don't trade our future for a pg whose game is based entirely on athleticism. 1 because we can sign him next offseason if he really wants to come here, and 2 because even if we trade for him we aren't winning a title with GS as is for years. It's pointless to me to try to go win-now mode when there is no way in hell we are gonna win now. Build this team, let them grow together for years, and then when GS's run is over they'll be ready to take over. The West is done for years now with this move.

So you pass on the opportunity to have Westbrook? I mean I'm not expecting to win anything, but I still want that man in a Laker uni. I can't help but love that kid and the way he plays. He might break down in the next few years but he's got that Kobe stubbornness about him. I like it.

I think it's at least worth discussing that's all.

We don't have to pass on the opportunity. Wherever he goes, he'll be FA next season.

How about this: For me, I didn't particularly hate Lebron for his decision, I hated him for The Decision. Lebron treated his FA with his trademark narcissism, while Durant did it with a little more respect and humility.

I actually have no issue with KD to Warriors. The players association had the option of smoothing out the cap increases over several years, and they chose not to, leading to this huge cap jump and the ability of the Warriors to sign Durant. I think, had this type of cap increase occurred when other big name players were available, we would have seen some similar movement.

I can't be mad at Durant for doing what he did.
