So Civil War is the best comic book movie I have ever seen. While watching it I just kept thinking "Wait...This is a comic book/summer blockbuster movie right?". I feel like you could take out all the supers and tweak the story and you would still be left with a really good movie. As for the new characters, they nailed Black Panther, spot on perfect, and FINALLY someone got spiderman right! Historically no one has ever done this. Spiderman is all about the huge contrast between socially awkward Peter Parker and Brash Spiderman. Tobey was a good Peter, and a mediocre Spiderman. Garf was a horrible Peter, especially since it was written as a cool skateboard kid, and a decent Spidey. The new guy nailed both. Heck, they even talk about the whole dynamic of Peter vs Spidey in the movie as Peter talks about football with Tony. It seems with the departure of Marvel Entertainment oversight Fiege is set to take the MCU to new heights.
Re: Moving all MCU shows to Netflix I really hope this is true. Network TV shows are simply terrible. The pressure to make each episode more self contained with a monster of the week style of presentation really hurts the ability to tell a story. With AOS there have been some very good stories being told, but I feel that they often don't get told well because each show is expected to have its own mini story with a beginning and a climax. Furthermore, AOS has really been hampered by network tv time and content constraints. I am not saying the show should ever be pg-16 like DD and JJ, but it could deal with a bit more complex subject matter. In the end I have no desire to watch another ABC MCU Show, especially Most Wanted or Carter, and hope that Fiege is able to move all of the properties to Netflix. I hope AoS can get itself back together, but aside from that I would rather see development of shows, mature or not, that can have the "13 hour movie" vibe on netflix. A "Runaways" show could be less mature audience and still be great on netflix. and for the DD crew Moonknight or a Falon Grey series featuring her pops(Blade),would be fantastic.
On the subject of Spiderman, I just wanted to vent about how ridiculous a friend of mine was being. He was very upset that Spiderman was inexperienced and how most of the Avengers were dismissive of him. Kept saying that Spiderman should be way stronger and highly regarded. When I asked him why, his answer essentially boiled down to Spiderman being the original Marvel superhero and that he was more important in the Civil War comics. Saying he should be on the same level as Captain America and Iron Man, and it's offensive that he's on the same level as Ant Man. He was dumbfounded when I said that this is a different universe and shouldn't have to follow the comics beat for beat. He couldn't articulate what specifically about having a young and inexperienced Spiderman took away from the storytelling in this movie. Just insisted he's not a screenwriter and it shouldn't be like this. Then he got confused and acted like the previous Spiderman movies are still canon. Saying that if Spidey has taken out guys like Green Goblin already, he should've already been on Cap's radar. When I said the timeline is different and we're still gonna see his development into a more powerful and respected superhero, his counterpoint was that we don't need another Spiderman origin story. This is a dude who I'm pretty sure has never read a Marvel comic. Just read a bunch of Wikipedia articles on their plot lines and became a comic book snob whose main criticism of any superhero movie is how they differed from his flawed interpretation of the comics.
I'm really hoping for: Secret Warriors- spin-off of Agents of SHIELD with Daisy leading a crew. Moon Knight- nuff said. Blade- with Snipes as poppa Blade and his daughter as the lead. How awesome would that be? It's time for SHIELD to be reconnected to the movies officially. It doesn't make sense anymore for SHIELD not to be on the radar of the Avengers. A global crisis, a missile blown up in outer space... I don't know if any of you guys saw the finale last night, but they debunked any way for Hulk to have left the atmosphere in that quinjet he stole in Ultron. This organization no longer makes sense and it's time to kill off characters you don't need and add the ones you want to the movie side. I'd hold on to Fitz/Simmons and Mack and that's probably it. Put them all in the movies as a re-instituted SHIELD under strict government restrictions.
Well Spidey wasn't the first Marvel character, he WAS in the movie stronger than a bunch of characters, and his role in the comics wouldn't have made sense in the films. Spidey does the unthinkable and reveals who he is in the comics, but what impact would that have had here? Nobody had heard of this Spider-Man. Sounds like your buddy was just being a dingus!
Yeah. I mean, when Winter Soldier tried to punch him, he made a mockery of his strength by catching his fist and sort of inspecting his metal arm. Dude is stronger than Cap and Bucky. I mean, how strong does he want him?
This is the same Bucky that holds his own against Cap, Black Panther, Iron Man... I mean this dude is no joke, but Spidey catches his punch and starts talking to him. Spidey also easily handles Falcon who is a trained military operative, brings down the *spoiler awesome moment* with the clumsy Star Wars reference, and is only 16 years old at the time. If this was a superhero draft he might go #1 overall, but certainly no later than #3 out of all the characters they had in that movie.
http://marvel.com/news/movies/26203...hly_anticipated_thor_ragnarok?linkId=24717779 Marvel announces an All-Star cast for Thor 3. I'll be honest it's the weakest branch of the MCU, but this cast is... nuts! Cate Blanchett- Hela Tessa Thompson- Valkyrie Jeff Goldblum- Grandmaster Karl Urban- Skurge Mark Ruffalo- Hulk Along with all the regular cast (minus Natalie Portman who wanted out).
So early reviews are out for X-Men, and its getting panned by top critics sitting at 36% rotten and is only 51% fresh from all critics. Apparently it has some good/great parts including solid performances, but its all diluted by the chaos that is the rest of the film. Personally I hope its a huge failure and that Fox will get smart like Sony and jump on the marvel train.
I think the reality is FOX could make a lot more money if they just played ball with Disney. I can't imagine what spider-man is about to do. Can you imagine a reboot of FF and X-Men within the MCU? Cha Ching... In the end I just think that Fox, Sony, and even the DCCU folks don't get it. They don't take the time to process, plan, and understand the subject matter and the end results reflect that. Disney would take the time to cast better, write better, find great directors, and weave a much better story.
I'm honestly okay with X-Men being with FOX. As much as I'd love to see X-Men involved in the Avengers, if it wasn't for the X-Men being at FOX we probably wouldn't be getting awesome lesser known properties like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Ant-Man. I just want FOX to understand the characters. They just look at the property as a "genre" and as a "blockbuster" where everything blows up and at the end things wrap up nicely. That weakens what comic book movies can be and it's less than the standard Disney/Marvel has set. I do however want the FF to make it back to Marvel. FOX clearly doesn't know what to do with them and Marvel could desperately use the villains attached to Fantastic Four. If I were Marvel I'd just cough up the straight cash to buy back that property. The problem is FOX has been consistently poking the bear with Marvel for years thinking Marvel wasn't a real threat. I've read the unreleased 90s FF movie really pissed off Marvel and that Marvel has tried to open negotiations for a buy-back, but FOX wouldn't listen. Unfortunate... I'd be fine with another Sony style deal too. Marvel gets to use their characters while forcing FOX to pay for solo movies of the Fantastic Four. As for FOX, I think they need a reboot. Get rid of Singer and start over. Small scale stories that deal with just the X-Men and give more attention to awesome characters like Cyclops. Cyclops is so much more than just a guy with laser beam eyes.
That is the biggest reason I want FOX to give up X-men. I remember reading an article early on in the X-Men movie development where Fox stated they weren't going to use any of the stories from the comics except of loose inspiration. This seems to carry over to the actual characters too. I just don't think they get it at all and instead of fantastic stories with great characters you get a mediocre story with odd characters. The whole thing needs to be rebooted by someone who actually cares about and understands the source material.
Agreed. I was hoping Apocalypse wouldn't perform all that well so they'd get it, but it opened with 100 million first weekend. Bad sign. FOX and Singer clearly don't care for the material, but why should they? They keep making money regardless.
True. I'm a Marvel fan so I'm certainly biased, but the one thing they are certainly doing is keeping the bar raised on what these movies can and should be. For these movies to be true successes and keep the genre alive and well: 1. True to the characters even if the plot differs from the comics. 2. Not just explosions, but a coherent plot. 3. A well thought out universe that connects organically from movie to movie while still maintaining individuality.
This is the same problem DC has. They recently hired Geoff Johns to co-run the DCEU. So at least they got a guy who knows the comics and their origins.
