I understand that it's a new system, new coach, new personnel, injuries, etc..

What I don't understand is what the hell did this team focus on in training camp? I heard it was defense, yet we're the worst defensive team in the league.

It doesn't look like we really did anything during training camp to assert any kind of identity.

Other bad teams like the Knicks are at least going through growing pains trying to learn the triangle. What exactly are we doing?

Maybe today. Our defensive ranking is the worst in the league though, and it's not close. :worried:

So, I took a look at some stats.

Defensive rating is how many points your opponents score, adjusted for pace.

Lakers are last. Well, last sounds bad, but just how bad is "last"? I went back 20 years, and no team came close to our horrendous 117.4 rating.

The difference between us and the second worst defensive team (Denver Nuggets) is the difference between them and the Los Angeles Clippers (22nd).

We have the worst opponent 2P% at 53.5%.
We have the 3rd worst opponent 3P% at 40.2%.
We are the 3rd worst team in opponent free throw rate.
We have the 4th worst DRB%.

Hey, some good news. At least, we're at league average in forcing turnovers. Lol.

Efforts been good, better...talents the same....Kobe and 4 guys that are bench players, then a bench of D league talent excusing Davis. When Young and Kelly...how does a guy that young get hurt/ injured all the time?... come back the talent will improve but realistically not by much. I see a battle for the 3 worst teams this year between them, the 76ers, and the Nuggets.... with that protected 1st round pick staying put, plus having the Rockets 1st rounder...certainly a late one, and the Rockets 2nd rounder also...helping get some talent on this team next year. This year is a done deal, it's too bad.

We showed promise against the Grizzlies, building from previous games towards improvement on both sides of the ball. We were only down 3 in the first half and thats because Pelicans went on a run to close out the half. Boozer was a liability all game long on defense which became a liability towards the entire rotation IMO. The energy wasnt there in the second half, like it was against the Grizz. Hill wasnt as scrappy in the paint, Boozer was just shot, Price didnt have the, "I just pounded 3 pre-workouts before I checked in" type of play" etc. We absolutely have to start Davis and Hill together, let them feed off each other, challenge each other by showing whose the bigger dog(in a good way), and bring Boozer off the bench where we can use his scoring. Sacre plays good scrappy D. We must try STARTING the game this way.

So why is Scott not making any adjustments now? It's painfully obvious what's not working. Screw player's pride. If they had any they wouldn't be this bad. Those who are producing need the most playing time period. That's how we'll win games. But no Scott still needs to figure it out. Smh. Even us fans can see what needs to be done.

Could be a case of easier said then done.. but ATLEAST try it. But maybe he wants to continue to try the line up for say 20 games(Almost 1/4 of the season), so he has no doubts of making player/scheme changes without regrets. Afterall, it is going to be an experimenting year. We kept making progress before the second half of the Pelicans game. I think we need to chill out a bit, be a little more patient instead of stressing 8 games into the season as if we had championship hopes haha. Cant stress enough the circumstances of which we have going on that we cant look off.

You're trying to get people to be optimistic in the "Whine, Moan, Complain thread". I appreciate your position and your points, but I don't think you're getting the point of this thread. It's the opposite of optimism, it is for venting and complaining. In any other thread, I say go all out on optimism. And sure, keep telling Lakers fans watching the worst team they've ever seen record-wise and on defense through 8 games to relax as if we don't know the difference between a good and bad team and aren't used to much better if you want, but maybe not this one, kind of a waste of time.

I know this isnt a good team. Its not making the playoffs. Its looking like its going to get that top 5 lottery pick afterall. I have my WMCs too, but to continue beating a dead horse is also a waste of time haha.

Its too bad Byron Scott isnt a Bill Bellichick type of coach. Its too bad Kobe Bryant is 26, its too bad Phil Jackson isnt the coach. Its too bad weve had injuries. Its too bad some fans thought life is over with Kobe getting "too" many minutes.

You can also beat a dead optimism horse. It's just a different way of going about the same thing. "Relax, relax, relax, relax...".

So, I posted about defensive rating earlier. Here's some more to put things into perspective about how bad our defense is.

The worst relative defensive rating (this is defensive rating relative to the league's average) in NBA history is +8.2 by the 1998-99 Nuggets and the 2005-06 Sonics.

The Lakers are currently +11.7. We are literally making history. Even if we improve a significant amount on defense, we'd still have a good shot at having the worst relative defensive rating in NBA history.

This is the worse team in Laker history right now. The sooner everyone comes to grips with that fact the better off we will be.
