Is it me or did Mcgregor get cocky after he tagged Diaz repeated on that eye? He had his hands down and was leaning forward a lot after that. Diaz caught him, wobbled him and it was over after that.
^ That's something he does, it's part of his deal. He thought he was untouchable. Still a shock for me. The bigger shock for me though was Holm/Tate. I thought Tate was going to get rocked... Wow. Great night for the UFC.
McGregor tapped really fast. Unlike Holm who fought until the end and took a little nap. Good for UFC or not? McGregor was becoming really popular and with Ronda's loss, he was their main meal ticket. I'm thinking Dana White is pissed off right now. I'm thinking Ronda has to fight Holm now, but no belt involved. I'm gonna hate it if they just give her a fight vs Tate without going thru Holm first.
Holm dominated that fight outside of the 2nd round when she got taken down. Tate won by the submission equivalent of a "puncher's chance".
I also think 170 is too high for Mcgregor. He has to stay below that. He's not going to dominate on 170.
For McGregor, it was an exhibition fight. He's not conditioned for that weight class and he kept throwing bombs and go gassed. Once Diaz caught him on the button, Connor couldn't recover from it and couldn't fight back once it hit the ground. Both a good sports about it all though.
I don't think McGregor's loss here hurts the UFC necessarily. He went up in weight. In his own weight class he's still going to dominate. For Tate, I think it's good for the UFC in general because Tate validates the weight class a bit. Where before it was assumed the field had to catch up to Ronda, now we're looking at a little more parity which makes it a little more "anyone can win". I think that's good for the women's side.
I'm a fan of McGregor, but one of the criticisms of him is he can't recover when hurt. Despite the weight, he should've won. Diaz had 11 days and his face was a bloody mess and I'm sure he couldn't see out of his right eye. I loved that he stuck around to answer questions afterward. Classy.
Diaz is unorthodox and just a tough son of a*****. McGreggor just couldn't hurt him enough. I don't think going up in weight was that big of a deal in this one. Connor is usually much bigger than his weighins when he fights, so I'm guessing he wouldn't have much of a problem going up in weight.
McGreggor kind of hinted at the only thing that changes about going up in weight: some of the punches he landed on Diaz would have knocked out guys in his weight class. He went up and guys that size are used to that kind of power. That's why he got over confident when he cut Diaz. In his own weight class, that's game over basically.
I think Connor's hands down show-boating was to mask his fatigue. I think he gassed from his flurries in the first and didn't want nate to know he was tired.
Well that's just a different kind of stupid hubris then, right? To think you can pretend something like that in a fight is pretty ballsy. The guy is going to try to tag you regardless of whether or not he knows you're tired. The only way that helps is if you think you've mentally broken Diaz and Diaz is not that kind of fighter.
McGregor-Diaz rematch offical for UFC200 at 170lbs, with Aldo & Edgar fighting for an interim featherweight belt. All 4 of those guys in press conferences together? Should be amusing.
McGregor-Diaz is a weird fight to push. Why now? McGregor has no suitors in his own weight class? To be fair McGregor was probably winning that fight before he got cocky, but it's still not a great match-up for him. Aldo/Edgar should be fun.
That's what I'm thinking. I mean this isn't a title fight, I know and the guy needs a challenge but damn. All it takes is a lucky punch from Diaz and it's over and Diaz might be able to beat him without luck. Ballsy play here. Probably not a smart business move.
Apparently, win or lose, Connor's next fight will be defending his Featherweight title against the winner of Aldo/Edgar. But yeah, if he loses to Nate again... definitely takes some of the shine away for sure. I must say, I'm really enjoying Nate Diaz being a star right now. His interviews are hilarious. Nice to see the Diaz boys getting some media respect for a change.
