Also sounds like Magic either doesn't think Phil is coming back OR he doesn't WANT Phil coming back....he wants Jerry West back. I agree with him on that. Not sure I want Phil and the triangle offense back.
I agree. We know she wants her brother gone and loves Phil. As messy as it is, if it means that whole mess will end I can get behind this.
I think Mitch has been a good GM as well. And I'm not sold West is ready either. But I heard today in an interview with Frank Isola that Phil can opt out of his contract this year. If that's true I can totally see Jeanie selling out pretty much anyone to bring him back.
I don't know if she'd be that self serving. I hope she wouldn't. That'd be a huge mistake and would spell even tougher times ahead than what we've got right now.
I have no faith in them at this point. I think if everyone was just worried about the best interest of the team they would have set aside their differences and worked things out by now.
I like how they fail to mention Byron Scott's coaching in all this... Believe it or, the Lakers roster has some good talent, but it's up to the coach to decide how to use it all... And so far, Byron has failed miserably... Get him out, put in a new fresh mind.
As I said many times before I unfortunately think winning titles again will depend on having a new majority owner . It's still "early" but the ability of the Buss children to turn gold into complete crap in just three seasons is scary . Jeanie will probably let Phil "run" the franchise soon and it's not good news. Another decision likely to be driven by personal feelings ... not good
Yep. Phil will have zero accountability because Jeanie ain't going to fire her fiance. I do not want Phil near this team unless it's in a figurehead, non-decision making capacity. Phil wouldn't hire Thibs either. He'd hire Walton (then force him to run the triangle exclusively) or some other triangle acolyte. Also, I knew Magic hated Jim, but damn. He essentially blamed Jim for EVERYTHING. Totally called him out on national television.
What I don't get about Magic Johnson is this: what was he really expecting? Why would any stars come here to play in LA with an aging, injury prone Kobe Bryant? It just doesn't make basketball sense for any of those guys to come here. Also, why would anybody wanna come and play for Byron Scott, a guy that doesn't even understand analytics? Lastly, the new CBA completely handcuffs teams like the Lakers because we're not able to offer as much money anymore....nor were we competitive enough to retain our stars (Dwight, Pau, etc), not to mention the coaches we've had don't exactly scream "championship". The problem is our team keeps GUNNING for superstars. We needed to be going after the 2nd tier guys as well. Guys like Tobias Harris, Kosta Koufos, Patrick Beverley, Corey Brewer, Danny Green, Demarre Carroll type of guys. We need to be on the ball with the second tier guys and not waste too much time on guys like KD and Derozan. However, I think we're better positioned this summer than any other summer because we will not have Kobe, we'll have two max slots, and a potential top 3 pick. We cannot screw this summer up.
