If it works for the character and advances the plot, then yes.

Lakers coach Byron Scott on how he'll occasionally talk to his younger players: "Most of the time when I talk to these guys, it might sound a little stupid, I talk to them like they're five years old. Because I do have to explain things. They're not much older than that. So I do have to explain things and make it perfectly clear that they understand what I'm saying. It's not saying that they're dumb or anything like that, it's just saying that they're young."

Courtesy of Baxter Holmes ESPN writer.

I am incredulous, yet at the same time this sounds exactly like him. This idiot needs to speak like they are five year olds only because it sets the scene when they read his playbook which is written in crayon. Bad choices are being made, and loyalty, fear of looking incompetent is preventing us from doing the right thing, which may or may not be the gif above me.

The full quote is less stupid. I get what he's saying it's just such a poor choice of words. I don't know how a professional person can be so tactless.

He comes across like a condescending prick when he is the verifiable worst NBA coach of all time

I teach college students - same age as these "young players" he's talking about. They're not stupid in the least, they don't need to be spoken to as if they're five years old. It's not just tactless (but it is); it's also out of touch with reality. Even if you had to teach them all the basketball fundamentals from scratch, you wouldn't have to talk to them as if they're children (and you probably don't have to talk to children as if they're children, btw).

My point wasn't just that it was tactless, but that it's just a completely poor choice of words. I think I understand what he means and it's not literally talking them like children. I'm pretty sure he just means he has to "dumb" down the conversation a bit until they catch up. When I was in school, I would frequently get lost in new terminology and it would confuse me. I'm preeeeeetty sure that's what he means, but a) choose your words carefully and b) why say it at all? It's not necessary to say that to the media.

See ..... that's what's wrong with the NBA today .... it's soft. No grit. In my day Riley used to scream and yell at us and we played in Converse canvas shoes .... and we LIKED it!!

I'm building men here that I can get in a fox hole with, not running some damn nursery school. They don't know NBA ball and that's why I talk to them like they're:
