The issue is they never really show Anikin being anything other than creepy. There is no reason for Padme to love him, there is no reason for anyone to trust him, there is no reason for his fall to be surprising or tragic. He is a creep from jump street.

What would have been compelling is for a real hero, one who is probably haunted by his past, to be broken by tragedy. To have something terrible happen to a loved one and have a evil genius manipulate that hurt and twist him until he is consumed by hate. Take it so he feels like he is actually betrayed by the Jedi so he hunts them down. And then when this once captain america type protagonist is saved by his son we have reason to rejoice because we see him as a hero again.

The explanation from reddit was basically:

Lucas was a micromanager to the extreme in his prequels. A lot of the issues can be taken back to him needing to manage every single last detail of the movie even in post production. What you see in that gif is two shots of Anakin mixed together in order to get the timing down perfectly when Anakin moves his head. This apparently is not uncommon in movies overall, but it IS uncommon to see it on a closeup of a man's face. It goes to show you the minutia that Lucas dealt in for these movies.

Really good read by Simon Pegg on his SW fandom and being on-set for TFA. Some cool behind the scenes tidbits and a little look at what went into it.

And an unrelated side-note of my own, because he mentions Anthony Daniels, it was so good to see 3PO back to his old self and funny again in his brief appearance in TFA. Right there not knowing when to shut up and interrupting a serious moment between Han and Leia yet again. He was always one of my favorite characters, he's great in ANH as he pretty much has to carry the start of the film for a little while there and make us believe this robot is a character we should care about. Then in ESB he has me rolling, hilarious and perfect, never shuts up to the point they finally have to switch him off. I dunno if many agree with me I've just always loved the character, never found him annoying.

That is until the prequels where they ruined him (though he was ok if pointless in Episodes 1&3). But 2, "this is such a drag", "I'm so confused", making him awful in CGI, giving him the ability to hang onto a platform flying around at high speed with those arms of his that can't even move that way, ugh. I hope we get a little more of him in the next movie, even if only one or two scenes again, he and R2-D2 always at least help connect me to the originals, they're almost the loveable little glue of it all, if that makes sense.

Well, the first part, something terrible happen to a loved one (his mother), and be manipulated by an evil genius is sort of what happened, but I agree the entire thing could have been handled much better. Rather than just point out that Anakin has darkness in him by Palpatine reminding him what he told him about his mother and killing the sand people, would have been nice to see maybe see Palpatine blame the Jedi for that. Like you say, hurt him and twist him, make him conflicted by telling him something like the Jedi made him abandon his mother and kept telling him to ignore his visions and not allowing him to go help her, not showing love or concern on their part. He does try and put down the Jedi to Anakin multiple times and put doubt and conflict in him, but I agree there are many ways it could have been done much better.

Could have been much worse too, and I really enjoy McDiarmid's performance for the most part, which I guess is one reason I enjoy 3 so much more than the first 2. Really my main complaint with the prequels I think is one many fans share, we didn't need to see Anakin as a kid. 1 should have started with Anakin about the age he was in AOTC, training as he was, a padawan. 2 should have been an entirely Clone Wars movie, and then 3 similar to what it is, but like you said, handled better.

Finally got around to watching this. Super late but wanted to avoid the crowds and the fans that will clap at everything and I end up missing half the movie.

Great film, you guys pretty much covered all the praise and all the criticisms. Questions were answered and even more questions came up but I'm sure they will all be answered throughout the trilogy. The set of new characters were great and very likable from the start (Rey is bae).

Favorite moment throughout the movie, towards the end where Ren is trying to use the force to grab the lightsaber in the snow and it just flies by his head and Rey grabs it.

JJ Abrams addresses TFA rip-off of ANH comments

    http://collider.com/star-wars-the-force-awakens-criticism-jj-abrams-rip-off/

Interesting read, I at least get the thinking with the explanation. Mainly I'm posting it for the tiny bit at the end about how JJ, Kasdan, and Rian Johnson collaborated to make their stories fit and how adjustments were made to 7 and 8. I find it interesting how this isn't Lucas' thing anymore, and multiple writers and directors have to get together to make this all fit, yet they each get to put their own stamp on the films. I guess in the same blueprint of the Marvel movies, but with IMO much higher expectations. People may get annoyed when a Marvel movie is disappointing, but they get pissed when a SW movie is.

Yeah I actually think it'd be awesome if Lucas was more accommodating. He completely backed away from the project because they didn't want to give him any control at all. Well I don't see why he shouldn't be there as a councilor. He's so great at building a universe. Among the modern era there's few like him. I get both sides wanting to make it a clean break, but I do fear we'll lose some of the cool, unique stuff that Lucas came up with.

Star Wars fans are insane. Eventually someone will make a working light saber, but until then, there's this:

This cracked me up, Adam Driver remains one of my favorite things about TFA, and stuff like this only makes me like him more. Very much looking forward to watching his character arc across these movies. But anyway
