Have not seen it yet. Happy to hear you guys all liked it.

How was the quality of the lightsaber battles? I saw a cool special narrated by Mark Hamill on ESPN talking about how they modeled the lightsaber technique after Kendo.

The lightsaber battles was the way it was in the original trilogy: not some over the top, highly choreographed "fight" that takes you out of it. Just like the originals, there are a lot of emotions that drive the duels. in short: it feels real and believable.

Yea it's very real, physical, primal...but paradoxically elegant. You feel the weight and heft of it all. It's not a ballet of feathery ninja-like choreography in the prequels.

I had a couple more thoughts last night:

Captain Phasma - disappointing and a waste in this movie. Not at all the threat I thought she would be. I hear she has much more of that role in Episode 8, but she was wasted in this film.

Hux - I love Dohmnall Gleeson, but I thought his acting of this character was the only one that took me out of the film. Too much of a caricature of twirly-moustache bad guy. Just really hammy.

I have to think Phasma had more in this movie but was cut a little short because otherwise I agree it was a complete waste. Hux I thought was pretty good actually. These guys are bad :D they're going to act like that. They're going to be jerks and twirly mustache guys because they're just the Empire. I thought he was just a more intense version of Tarkin.

Yea, you nailed that. He was really Tarkin with bad roid rage. :D I read that the First Order comprise of descendants of a splinter group of Imperialist Elites who didn't want to honor some peace agreement with the Republic. So in that context, maybe he does work. He did channel some spoiled, snotty rich kid who rose to power a little too easily and thinks a little too much of himself.

I still have hope for Phasma because it's been stated by the actress and a producer that she will have a much larger role in the next film and will be the bad-a** that everyone expects. Maybe it's my fault for building her up in my mind as main bad guy 1b to Kylo's 1a, and it just wasn't that at all.

That's not your fault at all, that's how the marketed her. They actually kind of painted themselves into a corner because now they've torn her down a bit. She had a towering reputation before the movie, now after the movie she's weakened. I hope they have big plans to make her an awesome character because otherwise she's a missed opportunity.

Just came back from the cinema. Went with my wife, who is not a fan of sci-fi in hopes of turning her around, but that was a fiasco - she slept for a big part of the movie and didn't like it at all lol.

Me on the other side - I really, really liked it. It had a little disney touch to it, but it wasn't disturbing to me, I had lots of fun and would actually consider going to the cinema to watch it again. It got me pumped up for the next part already. I also have to add that Daisy Ridley is really nooooice

I find her to be more likeable than either of those actors though

I can't be mad at how they represented Phasma, because one common theme about the trailers and everything they put out about that movie is that it told us nearly nothing, and in fact did a great job of subtly misleading us into thinking we knew more about the movie plot than we really did. I appreciate that they kind of lead us to think Fin was a Jedi and Phasma was a bigger star than she was.

I think it's kind of great to go into a movie you've been watching the trailers for, and come out to realize you knew almost noting before actually seeing the movie.

Does anyone feel a little catfished about whether or not Finn is a Jedi? They lead the masses to believe we'd seen the first black Jedi, but it became kind of unclear whether or not he was actually a Jedi/Force sensitive and clearly Rey is the new hope.

I'm cool with it. Like Barns said, it was fun not knowing what was going to happen for once (hello BvS trailer). I appreciated it more that way. Also as far as I'm concerned Finn IS Force sensitive, just maybe not as powerful as Rey.

    @therealdeal Mace Windu?
I was kind of hoping Finn would take to the force especially when he got into the fight with Ren. But clearly he was outmatched. Also am I alone in thinking (and hoping) there might be some romance between him and Rey? She did say they would meet again at the end. And yes she should have kissed him. He did after all risked his life to go back for her. Who knows, maybe after her training or something?
It's going to be too long until Episode VIII.

In thinking back to the original movies, Fin and Ren's relationship does mirror the originals in trying to be more sweet and taking things slow. if they're doing that for more of a buildup for when they finally do kiss, I'm all for it.

Ha! Forgot Mace. Good point. Still there was a lot of momentum behind that marketing. I thought it was an interesting tactic.

Yeah for sure there's a romance budding there. I thought it was superbly handled. They'll get to their relationship at some point. I hope it grows as they train together in the Force.

Just saw it - phenomenal. And let me add one thing:

    Rey is bae.

No really though Rey is such a bae. I might be infatuated with her, she is such a bad a**. And her badassness must make her an heir of Luke's.

I didn't see Han & Leia's offspring becoming the new dark figure. That was crazy along with that scene of him worshiping Vader's helmet. Pure epic. Who the hell is Snoke and where does he come from? Does the First Order bear any relation to the Empire? I'm dying for this back story on Kylo, Luke, and Kylo turning on Han/Leia and the good side.

I'm really pissed Han died, he was definitely a favorite of mine in the OT and Harrison Ford is a bad a**. It's unfortunate that character had to be killed off, but I get the passing of the torch. Would rather it have been Leia though...

I like Finn a lot. He brings in the human element - kind of scared, not very skilled, but has the power and taps into it towards the end. The lightsaber battle with Kylo was great and he wielded the saber pretty well for someone who isn't a Jedi......or is he? Does he bear any relations to the OT characters? Is he connected to Rey, Luke, Han, Kylo and Leia in any other way besides that he betrayed the First Order and stumbled upon the good side?

A lot of similar elements from the original - family member turns dark, Jedis are apart and powerless, a new dark force is rising, a droid finds a Skywalker heir inadvertently, familial relations between the dark and good sides, and probably more. But you know what, I loved it. It still had a sense of new to it and it perfectly re-visited the old elements in a classic way.

So obviously Kylo and Rey are related, but how? I sensed a weird brother-sister element between Kylo and Rey, but it could've just been a familial element. Kylo also obviously knows that Rey is related to him (and thus Vader), but Rey does not. The scene that made me wonder was when Kylo tells Rey that Han is like the father she never had. Then the looooong embrace with Leia at the end of the movie....like it was her mom. But they don't mention having a daughter (Han & Leia) and Luke is too damn awesome to 1) not have an offspring and 2) not have that offspring playing a major role in the Star Wars universe and being a bad a** Jedi.

Oh and Rey is major bae.

I was surprised to find out Episode VIII will be released on May 26, 2017. I thought they would've followed Lucas' old release schedule of every three years... which is just absolutely TOO LONG to wait for the next chapter, now that Abrams gave us a taste of this new generation of Star Wars. They already filmed some scenes and full production will begin January 2016 (which is next month) already!

Also... to hold us off for that year and a half wait... Star Wars: Rogue One will be out next year (some film about the group of rebels who stole the Death Star plans). Not really excited on that but hey... it's got Donnie Yen and Felicity Jones in it.

I spent the past week re-watching the first two trilogies on Blu-Ray. Before that, I had basically only watched the originals as a young kid and only watched the prequels once when they were first released. So I had forgotten pretty much everything lol. It was almost like watching it for the first time. I had a blast and even enjoyed the prequels, although I did notice a lot of flaws in the movies.

Watched Episode VII today and there isn't really much I can say that hasn't already been said. Just epic. One of the funnest movies I've seen in a long time. I was so excited the whole time (... and not exactly sober) and the movie was so fast paced, that I definitely need to watch it at least one more time. I watched a standard showing today, but I can't wait till some good seats open up at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood so I can watch it again in IMAX 3D.

I'll probably end up posting some spoilery thoughts and theories I have later after I have some more time to let that experience soak in.

No spoilers in this... But boy, Disney is just about to take over this world... They really know how to make movies... Seriously, who would've thought Disney... of all people, would bring back that old magical Star Wars Feelings that most hardcore fans were dying for? Props to disney, and props to Abrams who freaking killed it... The movie was awesome.

I really loved the dark tone the movie took on... People felt the movie had a touch of Disney to it, but I couldn't see/feel it. The movie's overwhelmingly dark tone really made me question if the movie was even a Disney movie hahaha.

The characters were easy to fall in love with. That new droid will be the face of the franchise just like R2 was in the originals... The new baddie Kylo Ren was not a 2-dimensional bad guy like most movie baddies are. There is so much going in there with him, that it even made me more interested in his motives and why he is the way he is.... All in all, flipping good movie. I will def go see it again in the coming days...

And they got Gareth Edwards to direct. Definitely not a bad choice.

Did they scrap the old rule that those tuned to the force are always born as twins? That might make the difference on whether Kyle Ren and Rey are brother and sister, or just cousins.
