In that case, then I hope we lose the pick this year if we don't get the first pick. I've read that the 2017 draft class is supposed to be deep and this years draft class is shallow. I think we're more likely to find a star player in next year's draft even if we draft in the middle of the first round than having the two or three pick in this year's draft.
Agree with you but I don't believe we'll be historically bad like we are this year. Not bad enough to keep that pick anyways, it's also top 3 protected next year.
A small part of me hopes we lose the pick so we can be done with this "Will we or won't we get our pick?" nonsense. But if we get #1, I take that back.
If we lose the pick this year, then we get to keep the 2017 pick. I think we are likely to pick in the 10-14 range. And from what I've read, we might be able to find better talent in that range of the 2017 draft (like a kawhi Leonard, klay Thompson, or jimmy butler type) than with the number 2 or 3 pick in this year's draft.
It would be amazing if we got the #1 pick and drafted Simmons. But how does Russell - Simmons - Randle - Clarkson work...they all need the ball in their hands.
I think that drafting Simmons would make me lean toward Luke Walton even more as our next coach. He's got experience now working with smaller line-ups and I could see him effectively using all these guys together.
Is there like a defensive stud at the wing in this draft...maybe one that can hit the three ball? It'd be nice if we could trade up in the draft to grab him if he exists.
Jaylen Brown is probably the closest. He looks a lot like Stanley Johnson from last season. Super athletic, strong defensively, but not a consistent shooter. Our answer at SF is almost certainly coming from FA or a trade though.
It probably needs to be at this point. Yes, if we somehow keep our pick there are a few sfs in there that could step into that void, but at some point we need someone old enough to rent a car in our starting lineup. But if we land at #3 and take Jaylen Brown, I'd be OK with that. We need some defense out there. I still like the idea of playing Simmons at center. There's only a couple teams in the league that would "punish" him. He's actually pretty big.
Defensive 3 and D wing in the draft? We got one this draft that's buried on the bench, Anthony Brown!
Nah Simmons isn't physical enough to play Center. Some are concerned he isn't physical enough to play the 4 let alone the 5 position. He'd start at SF and we'd just have to figure out a way to space the floor somehow. Ryan Anderson might be a sneaky pickup for us to that end. If we get the #2 or #3 pick I think there's a VERY high chance we trade that pick for someone.
i really wish the lakers were just a bit better this year. i'd be ok with giving up the 6th or 7th pick and knowing that we had one next year. but the idea of being the 2nd worst team and likely giving up the 4th pick...icky. i know it's only a couple spots, but statistically, top five picks have been a lot more valuable than 6-10, iirc.
Honestly if we had a 3-17 record playing exactly the way we did last night, I wouldn't care where we ended up in the lottery. Last night we showcased some hefty young talent and if we did that consistently, the league would take better notice and the pick wouldn't matter as much as the FA(s) we get. Now that we've been doing almost everything wrong though? Yeah. That pick is going to sting when it's 4th or 5th and the Sixers use it to trade for some pretty good veteran while we prepare to see who we draft at #32 or whatever.
Barnes or Batum is a must sign in the summer. If we get a draft pick we need to take the best available whatever the position.
Nice prospect if we finish with the 2nd or 3rd pick. I still agree with RealDeal though. I think if we don't land Simmons, that pick is going out in a trade to bring in a good player with 3-4 years experience. I mean, let's say we draft Ingram. Four of our starters would have 4 years experience COMBINED going into next season.
I've been keeping track of that kid too. I like his biomechanics a lot despite his serious lack of muscle. He moves really well and you can see he's got good athleticism. He needs to put on some muscle, but I think he can be really good. He'd be the perfect #2-#3 pick for us: someone we could ostensibly keep, but also could move for a more proven player. It's not that I don't think he'd be a very good NBA player, but like @Savory Griddles said: we need some experience out there once Kobe is gone. Metta is a good player-coach, but we need someone on the floor who can help keep the kids level at times.
