I posted something similar to this in the Byron Scott thread. Barnes fills a tremendous need and can help the transition to Luke Walton's system. And by transition I mean from zero system to a system of any kind. Unfortunately, I am convinced Barnes will be signed by the Warriors. I mean, there is an outside shot since they have Iggy there and Barnes is their 4th option. But the Warriors will likely sign him. Unfortunately, I really think that Mitch, Jim and Byron need to be long gone before we make our pitch to Barnes to even get him to consider the offer sheet. Walton needs to be sitting there as our new head coach in the meeting with Ryan West sitting in the GM chair. Whether Mitch is to blame for some of the recent hires at coach, our other stupid decisions we have made, he is stained with the stench that is a once proud organization failing to win a single playoff game since 2012.
The problem is KD, the front office will go after him and wait on him while Barnes, Batum and Derozan all gets scooped up.
I can. I was PISSED about the Byron hire. But he has actually exceeded my expectations in relation to his sucktitude. After last season, I can't even say I'm all that surprised. I thought the team could win 30 or so if everything broke right. Nothing has broke right.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Whiteside yet. I'd love to have him play the 5 here and he would allow us to play a more uptempo game (in contrast with Hibbert). He'd be a difficult player to get since I'm sure the Heat will offer him the max, but perhaps we could sell him the fact that our team is up and coming and will have a new head coach by then. Main priority though would be resigning JC, who's going to be a UFA like Whiteside.
We have Jordan's Early Bird Rights I believe although I can't remember the distinction off the top of my head between that and Full Bird Rights. All I know is he'll be available to sign one of those Chandler Parsons or Jeremy Lin type deals if he wants to. Or we can just extend him over the cap if/when the time comes.
The good thing with Jordan is that he seems completely down to Earth, respectable and not a douche. If the FO plays their cards right and approaches him in a way to say they will pay whatever a team does, but let's make it even over the years instead of completely lopsided like an opposing deal would be, I think he has enough sense to not sign elsewhere. Say if a team gave him 4/40 (5,5,15,15), I'd rather it be a flat 10 from our side across the board. Let's hope the FO can at least deliver in that department.
Whiteside is going to get this max contract from Miami and then become a daily off court problem ... yolo like Antoine Walker and the best of them I wouldn't be surprised at all
Basically. Trade or draft will be the only way to nab real talent (1 year rentals don't count) until a culture and personnel change happens and shows drastic progress.
I'm not sure that's true. A guy like Harrison Barnes needs someone to offer that max contract. Batum isn't likely to get max money. I'm not sure Derozan is likely either. We'll get someone, we'll just have to overpay for them.
