He looked horrible in the first quarter. I said he was 'done'. He did play better as the game wore on, though .
That reverse layup was a thing of beauty. Kobe played a relatively smart game. As long as he's not jacking up a bunch of three's, not holding the ball, then he's not hurting the team offensively. Definitely hit some big free throws.
Yeah he played a decent 2nd half in spite of Byron's whack substitutions with him a couple times. Except for long 3 and miss he unfathomably decided to chuck with around 18-20 seconds left on the shot clock and around 2 minutes left in the game with like a 5 point lead only. Clank, go the other way and if I'm remembering right it knocked the lead down to only 2 points.
Yep, goddawful first quarter and still missing 2/3rds of his shots. But the baseline moves are still killer. I'm hoping what we are seeing is rust from not playing for so long and not his legs. Might be a combo of both. If he's going to miss this much going forward though I only ask that he doesn't shoot so much. And that when he's sucking we sub in MWP.
He started 0-6 I think. Then he went 5-10. He can still score, but I think his legs need to get under him.
Gotta love Ron. Always been a great teammate. Definitely one of my favorite Lakers of all time. That shot against Boston in the final minute was all time clutch. His defense against Pierce the entire series. Wanting to come back to the Lakers. Worked his butt off just to make this roster. He still has something left clearly. Still has that defensive tenacity, those great hands, strength, and physicalness.
I remember Kobe and Wayne being close. Anyway I know he was bad at first, but after the first quarter Kobe was great. He operated in the post mostly. Was looking for guys more. Quicker decisions when shooting the ball. I thought he had a vastly superior game than he's had so far this year. Very encouraging.
Did anyone notice Ron's thumb in the photo? Wow! Years of dislocating probably gives it that range of motion!
Living legend. The building was electric last night, I'd say at best 50/50 between Lakers/Nets fans. But the respect and admiration showed for this guy was off the charts. Everytime he had the ball, people were at the edge of their seat waiting for a shot to go up. He was pretty bad that first quarter but picked it up and that reverse layup he had had people going nuts. This is a guy who at this point does not seem to be able to go off on those scoring binges yet folks were still acting like it'll happen any moment. As I was walking into the arena some dude tells me "I saw him come in!!!" as he saw my jersey. When he subbed in in the 4th there at the end, crowd chanting his name. Really great to see, great win. Finally.
I just want Kobe to go out gracefully, he deserves it. If he plays like he did in the 2-4th quarter of last game, he'll find his niche.
Kobe needs to retire after the season with his dignity intact. Imagine two consecutive seasons of 25% 3PT and 35 % FG shooting.
Imagine if he could accept just being a cog in the machine? He could play for several more years as a contributor like how Vince Carter has stayed around. Like Grant Hill did, Pierce, etc. I don't think he'll ever want that, but if he could step back and let the guys take over, it would be cool. Downside of being an alpha once you lose "it" though, is that probably isn't possible.
