Some of it may be due to medical/training staff. But others are due to medical history.

Nash has always had issues with his back. He had it under control in Phoenix. Not so much now.
Xavier had injury problems when he was in Memphis.

The medical/training staff doesn't make draft or trade decisions. They have to work with the athletes the FO brings in.

    *sigh*

I was really looking forward to watching Randle play this year. Like some already said, we're extremely fortunate it was a break, not a torn ACL like they were first speculating. He should be ready to go next season at the very least...

In the mean time, if he is able, the training staff should focus on building him up like Griffin/Noel when they were out for the year. Study the game, watch film, maybe work on his jumper once he advances in recovery. I wish him the best of luck, but man, this is gonna be a long season. Third year in a row of complete disappointment, second year in a row with absolutely nothing to look forward to.

Well, he had issues with his right foot before the draft as you noted; also, he had another issue on that foot in high school when he was a senior:

"In the second game of his senior year at Prestonwood Academy, Randle broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot in what was considered a season-ending injury. Randle returned for five playoff games and averaged 28.8 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks en route to Prestonwood Academny’s third consecutive state championship. He was then granted an exemption to play in the McDonald’s All-American game."

Kupchack stated over and over that Randle didn't need surgery, but whether nor not this had anything to do with his leg, I wouldn't know.

Wow, Randle's injury is pretty much the worst thing that could have happend to us . Can we ever get a break with all these injuries? Basically all of my excitement for this season has evaporated, maybe I will be able te recreate it with the time

I don't kno what to say. He was the prize so to speak of that horrible season last year and goes down the first day. It's so hard ... but I hope he can come back and with a guy like Kobe he can and will keep his spirits up!

I'm pretty much speechless. I was looking forward to one thing this year, and that was taken away in game 1.

    broken tibia is no joke.

That's a kick in the junk.
I was just reflecting last night before going to bed, "Even if we suck, I'll get to see Julius develop."

How does this affect him in the long run? He will make a full recovery health-wise, but what about between the ears? He has shown to have a beast mentality, but dayam...getting seriously injured in your first NBA game! Does he ever truly shake the concern in the back of his mind and play free and aggressive?

I guess it's a concern, but while it's a serious injury it's not a horrific injury like a few guys have suffered. He's young, he has a great group of people around him, and he has a guy who just came back from season-ending injuries in consecutive years.

This injury has definitely taken the wind out of the Lakers' sails for this season. Julius was such a bright light, a real joy to watch play and you could tell that he has the IT quality. He just draws you in when he's on the court.

We're going to miss that spark and that hopefulness that he brought to the bench. He was the one guy there who could possibly break out in any given game because there aren't a lot of guys who could stop what he does when he's on. Of course Swaggy P will be another big spark for us when he returns, but even with what we were seeing in pre-season Randle could be a matchup nightmare.

It's just deflating to lose him for most of the season or all of it. I'm sure Kobe will check in on him regularly though during his recovery. Heal up Julius. Want to see you out there again.

Pretty deflating injury, and on par with our luck the past few years. First game of the season too. Just horrible...

Its going to be a long season
