Former Lakers player James Worthy has been hired by the team to work with the coaching staff it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak. In his position, Worthy will work with head coach Byron Scott and his staff, focusing his attention on working with the Lakers big men. He will accompany the team to Hawaii for training camp and will continue to work with Lakers players throughout the season. Worthy will also continue his role on Time Warner Cable SportsNet as an analyst for the network’s Lakers coverage. “James was one of the best forwards to ever play the game,” said Kupchak. “We feel he will be a valuable addition to the coaching staff and will do an excellent job teaching our group of big men. We are pleased and fortunate to welcome him back to the organization.” An NBA Hall of Famer, Worthy played all twelve of his NBA seasons (1982-1994) with Los Angeles. Named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, he concluded his career with the Lakers ranked sixth all-time in scoring (16,320), seventh all-time in team field goal percentage (.521) and third all-time in team steals (1,041). His accolades include three NBA Championships (1985, 1987 and 1988); NBA Finals MVP (1988); 2-time All-NBA Third team (1990 and 1991), 7-time All-Star (1986-1992) and All-Rookie First Team (1983). http://www.nba.com/lakers/releases/150928_jamesWorthy
So... MWP + Worthy to tutor Randle. They must really see something there. Imaging Julius becoming a combo of the two! GOAT.
good...i think the only person angrier than myself after a bad loss is James...he doesn't hold back either
Speaking of in shape..... Big Game James is drinking the Metta juice too with his face and upper body looking like it, so he can get out there and show these guys. Tight. Thick. :crazyron:
Love it! Big game James should be a great addition, but the thing I find interesting is it seems he would have to be a specialty coach because he's not going to have time to be on the bench during games and commentate for TWC at the same time. Looks like he'll probably just be a coach for practices.
I like James' ability to explain or break down what he's talking about in plain English. I think he will be an asset to longtime friend and partner in crime Byron. Move approved! nethumb:
Good move. Worthy should know enough being coached by Smith and Riley. Just avoid calling room service for other than food.
Worthy and Ronron mentoring Randle? Hard to ask for anything better than that. Randle needs to be a sponge and soak it all up.
I forget the other guy's name but he is good, and James is good and the Girls are good, Coach Miller is good. All these guys and gals providing the color on TWSN for the Lakers are amazing I think. This year with that kind of stuff is going to be off the charts. Worthy right now has to be, like Byron, in his dream post Lakers Hall of Fame playing career ..... in his dream job. He's so personable and asks such great questions and commands such great respect from the players too. Hello ..... a 4th championship winning (and 3rd multi-championship winning) Lakers great for all these guys to learn from and be encouraged from. And these young guys .... Julius, D'Angelo and probably to a degree Clarkson are young alpha dogs already. This is why our young guys will be delivering like far more experienced players with their seriously wonderful assortment of skills, by I think Christmas, hell .... maybe sooner, once they all start gelling together. Even losing Nash, look at the freaking championship experience on the floor with them and coaching them. I could not be more excited. And I will be saying this honestly in different ways as I work my way through all of the Media day footage today. A great day in Lakers Land. Seriously. :Chick: :JerryBuss:
Excellent. I think we all had this thought for a long time "Wow Worthy could really make a great assistant coach for us". It's not a reality. And yes I love that James rips us a new one in post-game when we deserve it, including the coaching staff. I hope him being on staff doesn't cause conflict of interest and he still calls Byron out when necesaary.
