That last story by Smith? It happened in 2004. Gary Payton had to plead for 24 to get his head into the game. Bryant was probably so frustrated with that doofus Howard that he had a locker room epiphany about O'Neal. I do agree with Baseless that by then O'Neal's weight was killing his stamina and placing a large strain on his body. Two Big Macs? LOL!

Looking back...I'm grateful that they were even paired together. Us Laker fans have been spoiled by nothing but the best and that duo was no exception.

That was a really fantastic segment. D12's biggest contribution as a Laker?

    I'd buy a copy of a Shaq/Kobe book by Stephen A.

I'd say he probably has the best relationship with the players and gets the most news/info/stories from them vs. any other member of the media. He has earned their trust and respect and he doesn't abuse them or embarrass them with what he's told. He's a true insider in that regard. Chris "Sources" Broussard could learn a thing or two from him.

I used to be in a situation where I could listen to Jim Rome's radio show for over 15 years straight. Well after the Jim Everett incident on TV years earlier and early in Rome's career, that he has owned many times. Though he still maintains that Everett was told what was going to happen and still snapped, and himself has owned his part in that debacle.

All that said, just to say at least on radio because have never much watched Rome on TV, nor do I think it's as good an interview venue for him and athletes ..... that I think, IMO, he has that same kind of respect with pro athletes and sports figures that come on his radio show and he does the best interviews in the business.

Of course Stephen A. also mixes in actual "reporters" skills too, like Big Nasty Joe McDonnell used to do. Players and team insiders would give stuff up to him, and seems like Stephen A. has stepped his game up in recent years, beyond just the annoying screamin' schtick.

When Bryant won his fifth championship in 2010, O'Neal, who won four, said he was upset.

"He gets No. 5 and a reporter says, 'You feel good you got one more than Shaq?'" O'Neal said. "Then Kobe was, 'Yeah, I got one more than Shaq.' I was like he got me."

For his part, Bryant said he was driven even more after O'Neal got his fourth ring in 2006 with Miami.

"I knew he was going to push me to win more, because I always wanted to get to where Magic [Johnson] was, where Michael [Jordan] was," Bryant said. "So four was something that was really on my radar. It pushed me even more. It drove me even more. So when I got five, I was like, I just had to turn the knife a little bit."

Actually from all of this I understood that Shaq (as the mature player of them) needs to take all the fault. And he admits it. He sholdve been the better man, take his 3 finals mvp to his memories, and let Kobe run the show till the end if his career.
That would probably made him a contender for the all time great center. And I even admire Kobe more from those stories. What a legendery player.
And the best part for me was to hear Kobe is excited about this season.

Funny, I haven't been moved at all to listen to this yet. Now ^^^ I am just to hear what he has to say to Shaq about this year's team.

Actually I really enjoyed listening to it. I don't know what was 20 seconds, but Kobe and Shaq were talking together for a good 20-30 minutes.

Things that really stand out to me for all the Kobe haters in the world is that Shaq said

"Kobe is the greatest Laker ever"

And around 2001 Shaq said "Kobe is the best player in the world" and he restated that belief in the podcast.

There was a lot more good stuff in there, but these days there is such a plethora of Kobe-bashing that those quotes stood out to me. If Shaq can say that stuff then these haters need to pack it in.

LT it's definitely worth a listen if you remember those days. And unfortunately there's not too much talk of this season.

LOLOLOL! Still have not gotten off my a** to listen to Kobe on Shaq's podcast yet. I think it's some of the "tell us something we all didn't know already" effect. Plus I have my doubts as to whether Shaq would now be so buddy buddy and magnanimous if in fact Kobe had stalled at 3 rings and had not overcome the "Kobe can't do without me...... Kobe...Kobe.....tell me how my a** tastes" piece of history. I rank it right there with all 7' 320 lbs of prime Shaq calling out the manhood of other guys he's beating the crap out of. Whatever. Good for the masses to see these guys EACH own their parts in the breakup and make nice formally finally in a widely viewed format with the podcast.
