http://watch.scout.com/former-washington-center-robert-upshaw-talks-after-seattle-pro-am-8/28/2015 Upshaw gives us an update in the video on the link I provided, but I'll try to summarize for people who don't want to click on the link. - Says he expects to in Lakers Camp - Nothing signed officially with the team - Knows he can make the team and 'he'll be a Laker.' - He's been working out keeping in shape and has been participating in the Seattle Pro Am..
Finally something. I don't know what happened in Vegas, but hopefully it stays there, and we can move on with Upshaw in camp
I'm not yet convinced anything happened in Vegas. I'll say more why in a bit. Stats-wise, Upshaw had 4 points, 3 boards in 3 minutes. Looking at what Upshaw says about his status, he's GOING TO BE in camp. He hesitated and tried to find the words to express what his status is with regards to the team. There isn't and hasn't been a contract offer. Yet he says he WILL BE on the team. Doesn't it sound like the team has told him to stay clean going into camp and they'll sign him? He then thinks that he'll definitely be able to do that, so he says he WILL BE on the team. It's not a guarantee; it's a conditional thing, and he thinks he can obviously fulfill the antecedent of that conditional.
Maybe Pincus had a flashback in Vegas to when he was just a "scrub" on CL posting rumors? JK ..... Eric
I am rooting for him. Has a ton of potential, but he has to prove his heart and his mind are in the right place.
I don't think this means he didn't screw up in Vegas. From what I remember, it sounded like a contract was offered during Summer League. Then those talks dissipated. Now it sounds like a conditional chance that Upshaw gets signed. Maybe all he did in Vegas to "screw up"was go out at night and that broke the team's trust so now he has to really shape it up in order to get signed. I think the reason people think he screwed up in Vegas is because of the fact that it sounded like a contract was offered and then now we're hearing this kind of stuff.
It wasn't just him. I heard a podcast with Pincus a couple of days ago that insinuated it was the whole team that screwed up. Nobody knows Robert's role in the incident, but the team came out and looked like they had a day off in Vegas...either way, Robert's going to be on a short leash due to his past. If he wants to have an NBA career, then he the Lakers are doing the right things by holding him accountable by instituting measures to see if he follows through with those steps. There is nothing wrong with that.
Yeah if it was a team thing, like Bob taking Russell, Randle, Clarkson and several other guys to his room to party with some blow and tunes ..... what's the big deal?
Obviously something is still up in the air, otherwise Upshaw would be able to give a more concrete answer. He sounds like he knows what he needs to do in order to get a roster spot, and that it's going to happen. However, most players are confident they will accomplish their goals, like a season or two ago Tobias Harris said he was going to be an All-Star. Doesn't mean it's going to happen. Personally I'm pulling for Upshaw, but trust the Lakers decision-making and respect what has been done thus far to keep his personal issues private while still offering support. Classy move by the organization.
Reminds me of... And the scene that brought them to that intoxicated state. They were probably still thinking about Mrs Davis
Yeah I'm getting the same vibe. Something clearly happened that kept a contract off the table, but they're not closing the door. That tells me: A) what he did probably wasn't that bad and B) they like him enough to let him continue earning a shot here C) he seems willing/glad to accept that challenge I dig everything about that.
Honestly...Upshaw isn't the future of this team. He is what he is...a moon shot. It might work out and it might not. Its a low risk high reward situation. I'm pretty laid back. Of course I hope he is a steal but if he isn't...don't let the door hit ya.
