Wow, this is interesting, to hear formal invitation from Byron. And now that it is on the table, this will say a lot to ME about Nash as a person. Especially since he was on record, just being truthful, making the comment about "money". Did not work out (extremely) unfortunately but he was given his "chance" by the 1st class Lakers organization, much to their getting the short end of the stick. This would be a "man of character's" way of trying to help make that outcome at least a little bit better this year....by doing that.

If he declines, then I change my opinion on Steve Nash.

Definitely an interesting development. As a "thank you" to the team, it'd be great for Nash to step into that role. What else would he be doing for the year besides collecting our cash?

There's all kinds of things he can teach if not necessarily his own transcendent court vision and hall of fame performance. The mindset behind elite PG play, and certainly some of the ball handling, dribbling and passing off the dribble with either hand types drills that I am sure he has used all of these years to keep himself elite in those "skill" areas..... for one. And then too his observations against teams we play all season long, just like Scott is smartly trusting and tapping into Kobe's basketball intellect brilliance.

It would be awesome if he decided to stick around to help mentor our guards in an assistant coaching capacity, but I wouldn't necessarily hold it against him if he didn't want to. It might hurt him to stay so close to the game fresh off the heels of the news that his career is over.

One of the smartest players to ever play. I think it would help this young team out.

Yeah....but.....like I mentioned.... I would hope a player of his pedigree that was able to give us virtually nothing for 3 years, would have his reputed "character" to try to at least a little bit help make up for the HURT he put on the Lakers organization with the money and the draft positions given up to acquire him.

He's gotta be one of the top 5 skilled point guards in the history of the league.

I'd love to see him mentor Lin and Clarkson.

I was wondering if Nash could actually physically handle it, sitting on planes and bus chairs for hours on end and lugging around luggage. Knowing his desire to play too he will try and be an "active coach" in practices with the PGs showing plays and who knows what will happen. That's where I would worry about him because his problem really seems to kick in at NBA speed basketball.

His problems would surely make it difficult, but wouldn't he be able to look at film and tell people what to look for?

Yeah good point....full time coach could be physically taxing on him and would require real commitment. Maybe even as a special PG development coach when the team is at home would be worth something. Like Kareem used to do with Bynum. He wasn't traveling with the team was he? That wouldn't seem too hard on him. Just go to home games and practices. Give us something back....anything...... [IMG]

Ah, don't make it sound as if he is handicapped. If Phil could have done it... He went trough practices and had no issues. Games are what hurts him.

Well - as an AC he won't have to play games, just show a move or direct it here and there.

I would like to have Nash hang around to mentor the PG's on the team. He needs to earn his money somehow. I'd even be okay with him selling beer at the Staples center if need be.

Given that he hurt his back while carrying bags, I think his situation is different from PJ's. And I was just thinking about easing him into coaching duties, not saying he couldn't do more once his condition returns to where he's feeling pretty decent again.

This is the only way how I imagine he'd physically be able to handle an 82 game season:

[IMG] Reminds me of an episode on The Big Bang Theory a year or so ago where the main brainy dude was laid up in bed and robot device was cruising around with a monitor with his mug's image driving his friends nuts.
