https://kareem.substack.com/p/bruce-lee-and-me?utm_medium=email I really liked this piece by Kareem. Didn't know Bruce Lee had died right when Kareem was flying to meet him. Gut wrenching
Wow..only Cap thread in 50 pages. I have to do something about that. Vintage Jabbar vs Wilt. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1VzRF5dozT/
Happy Birthday! Kareem sits in a class of his own Today is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 79th birthday. People talk about Kareem a lot, so I don’t want to get on a soapbox about how “nobody ever talks about Kareem.” They do. We do. The discussion about him, though, should be more in the zone of best player ever and not just looking at his numbers. Kareem literally changed the game. You weren’t allowed to dunk in an NCAA game from 1967 to 1976, and everybody called it the “Lew Alcindor rule.” (Kareem legally changed his name from Alcindor in 1971 after converting to Islam.) Abdul-Jabbar went 79-2 in high school and won 71 straight games. He won the national championship in high school in his sophomore and junior seasons. His UCLA Bruins went 88-2 in his three seasons (remember, freshmen were ineligible back then, though his freshman UCLA team went 21-0). He won the NCAA championship in all three seasons. When Kareem made it to the NBA, he won an NBA championship in his second season. He won six titles, six MVP awards and two NBA Finals MVP awards. He was the league’s all-time leading scorer until LeBron James blew that record out of the water. But from the start of high school through the end of his historic NBA career, nobody has had a bigger impact on the court, and nobody has had more success at all three levels than Kareem. You can make the argument that he has the best and most complete résumé in basketball history. Happy birthday, Cap! …. from The Athletic
