Getting an extension, doesn't garuntee that your job is safe. If we go out in the 1st two rounds, without a significant injury. It's time to clean house, GM, HC, and players.
Now you of all people who preach it’s Luka’s team now and all about making him happy since he’s a competitive em-effer …. ignore the distinct possibility that he really likes Redick and is impressed by him and is really happy with a lot of his teammates as it plays out. Walters isn’t going to go Jerry Jones here. Nor is Jeanie.
If he s***s the bed like last playoffs, then I hope he gets fired. Destroying guys confidence so you can't even get 5 minutes stretches from guys got regular burn in the regular season, no help counters to PnR coverage changes, not changing how Luka or Lebron attack a defense, no subs for an entire half, etc. I don't see this as championship or bust for JJs job because frankly the Lakers don't have a championship roster just yet. Just like the last couple of years close but not quite yet. Feels like the Lakers management feels the same sigh
I will say this in JJs defense. The lakers were a better team before the Luka trade. Fat coming off an bad injury Luka wasnt significantly better then AD and the losing Max cost them a critical 3 and guard defender. Luka wasn't the same Luka who destroyed the Wolves just the year before and the Lakers had no replacement for either AD or Max They still would have probably lost to Denver but that team a lot like this year IMO was just a roleplayer or two away from being a real contender
I actually think the opposite Slick. Luka arriving has changed the timeline, all the history of the AD & Lebron years are wiped. Basically Rob & JJ have a fresh start and a 5 year window to make it work with Luka. If by year 3, we aren't on the cusp of a championship, I'd expect changes then, but not after this season or even the one after. It's also why I think we've been reluctant to trade that 1st cheaply. If we wait a season or two, we can get 3-4 firsts for a trade. I get it.
Right trading Ludabrow made us worse in the short term. I think we've addressed some of those issues with getting Ayton and Marcus Smart, and Latavia and a healthy Robber Baron will help too.
Nah..you aren't paying attention to Luka, he's already been to the Finals, he's already told everyone it's all about the chip. If we aren't competing right now, don't expect him to be here in 5 years. 4-5 seasons in a row, of coming up short(with high end talent?) No that isn't going to cut it bro. Rob is on the clock now..this is the 4th season since the Conference Finals team, he doesn't get some kind of free pass for the next 3 seasons. Nope..I'm not buying that.
Rob is definitely on the clock. Mark Walter won't futz around long. Look what he did with the Dodgers. 12 division championships in 13 years. 13 straight playoff appearances -second longest in MLB history. He's here to win. Good article right here: https://sports.yahoo.com/article/wants-win-four-things-know-152619928.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall
I'm not saying we aren't going to try and compete. I'm saying with Luka, this is a new slate and the errors of the AD/Lebron years aren't being used to judge our present - it's a completely different team now. If we don't win a championship this season, they won't get fired. That probably happens in year 3 or 4. You can put your spin on it however you like, but both of their recent extensions signify what ownership is saying: we want consistency and continuity with Luka moving forward and we believe we have the right coach and front office.
yeah, the fact that the house wasn't immediately cleaned tells me that either walter liked what he saw from the outside or liked what he heard from rob and jj after they initially met. they're both going to get a 3-year run starting now, imo. and i think that's fair. so, i agree with slick except for time frame. it's not this year that's going to make or break for their jobs, but this 3-4 year period. and again, i'm pretty comfortable with both rob and jj, tbh. i know i'm in the minority (especially on the former), but i think we've played a lot of things the right way, particularly since magic left the FO. very few things (westbrook trade and caruso FA choice being the gigantic exceptions) have made me feel like we're not following a sensible process in the front office. and jj seems methodical and seems to be able to connect with players. i think this can work.
Man..if we don't make it out of the 2nd rd, they are getting fired. Especially for Redick. We are already built around Luka. Lebron James is still one of the very best players in the league. Austin is a potential All Star caliber player, we have a legit starting center, and a slew of decent role players. It's win now..right now IMO. 3-4 years? That's a lifetime in the NBA. Luka would have already been here for 4 or 5 playoffs runs by then. Reddick is absolutely not getting that long of a leash. For what? Luka might not be happy with Redick after this season. You guys are making assumptions about what HE thinks.
Same as you are and you’re not acknowledging that by all appearances and things reported said Luka seems to really like JJ and want continuity. If that’s the case he’ll be here unless he totally blows it. Kind of just something to argue about but not going to happen because we’re going to kick some a** this year and JJ will be a big part of it and it’s a honestly a pretty great roster with few weaknesses if players perform to and above their past capabilities. Which I expect. That Rob put together. With still all the expirings and picks and talent to make deals if needed. Relax!!
I'm expecting excellence LT..however recent history shows... Vogel won a chip and lasted 3 seasons. Ham went to the conference finals and lasted two. Redick got bounced in the first round, I'm not sure why, he automatically deserves 3 or 4 more seasons, in order to figure it out. It's not a given, that JJ would have been hired, if we already had Luka.
OK stay tense about it ready for the guillotine to drop if it a makes you happy. I’m going to enjoy the ride this season.
Me too man. However I want the players and coaching staff. To go into this season, having the mindset that their jobs and livelihood, depends on winning a chip now though!!
Of course and I’m expecting JJ will spell that out to them in no uncertain terms in their kick off team meeting Monday morning. The goal of a championship, team first attitudes and all that …. not the sword of @Slick2021 hanging over everyone’s head.
The assumption is based on Luka's tendencies. He backed Jason Kidd in Dallas, he is tight with JJ and I don't think Reddick gets an extension if Luka wasn't on board.
Yeah, firing coaches and management just for the sake of change is pretty idiotic. Lakers already went through Ham and Vogel in a short period of time. I'd rather the Lakers just let JJ do his thing and create some sort of system rather than just overhauling everything. It's the same nonsense that went on with Ham, honestly... People just wanting change, were excited to get Ham, and then realized he was a snakeoil salesman. It's perfectly fine to not win every year if you're building on something worthwhile. Rob's not the best but he's still learning and is above average. I think this offseason was masterful by him. It's not easy to manage a LeBron-led team but he's done well since taking over. No future liabilities, cap space for Jokic or Giannis, managed to keep the 1st rounders, got Ayton, and the team is competitive and young. He's given the Lakers the roster to compete and has let it be known that while they still want LeBron, they aren't bending over for him. It's up to them to show up.
