Personnel matters, but with such glaring mistakes this series, can you confidently say he will have the experience to not make other mistakes next year playoff? With the Lakers, every year is championship or bust, do we have the patience to let JJ learn on the job?
^I would sure hope so... Intense but very detailed. In the end Redick improved us in droves but the postseason exposed his inexperience. He'll be fine.
I think JJ is here for the long haul. I'm hoping for a Jerry Sloan type of tenure but with better results. Maybe it's not what he wants, and maybe someday he burns out or burns out the players, but I think he's a great fit for the long term.
i think he had very few options and made a couple poor choices in the playoffs. i'm not sour on him, though. i want to see what he does with a roster better suited to luka and a summer and training camp to develop sensible schemes on both ends. it's not easy to integrate a piece like that in a few weeks.
Remember when some of us thought, he was keeping his cards close to his vest, not letting other teams know our plays, saving a "surprise" for the playoffs? And boy, he did ... turning into a combo of Mikey D and Thibs, ooof.
Reddick did a commendable job in the regular season getting us to third in the jam packed West. Unfortunately he made some mistakes as a rookie in the playoffs. But I think he’ll learn from it. It became clear quickly that he didn’t have the guns to go all the way this year. No playable center was a death knell.
I’ll admit I was one of them. I was like, “If he’s exposing guys like Joker and KAT in the regular season, just wait to see what he cooks up in the lab for the playoffs “. Boy was I wrong
I take into account that this season was disjointed during the last third (?). Chemistry was being built but the James injury really did not help. Doncic still acclimating his game with the others too. Redick was left to just throwing whatever sticks. Learning on the job while everything was in flux. He'll learn.
One last thing on JJ JJ just point blank telling Hayes that he was not going to play was just unbelievably stupid and stubborn. It's one thing to let the player know you're taking him out of the starting rotation but to basically not have ready just in case you need him at some point was so stupid. Guess what when DFS was in foul trouble and then fouled out with Gobert going bonkers and Vando out to lunch on offense, you may have wanted to stop the bleeding with a center at least. This is opposite of Phil Jackson, he would put in some random player just because he needed to fix a matchup problem for a couple possessions. He trotted out the corpse of Horace Grant once in his final season because some player was punking Rick Fox in the post just to stop the bleeding from the same play. I know the players seems to like him but just an overall awful performance IMO this series
not sure if throwing luka under the bus in the first press conference is a great idea. i mean, there's no way he's talking about anyone else, right? i'm also not sure anyone is in good enough shape to play the entire half carrying the load jj was expecting from luka and lebron in this series.
My thought and it certainly is true when you look at AR’s upper body 4 years in that he was talking about both those guys. He HAS to get stronger up top PLUS add to his quite good lower base.
I agree with this as well, dude needs to chill a little bit, not a ton, but a little bit for sure. Blind rage doesn’t lead to rational decisions
Young coach, with no real prior assitant coaching job. It was bount to happen. Does nobody go through the ropes anymore? Outside of this series I think JJ did a great job, but not making any sort of adjustments and being stubborn about it is just wild.
Hopefully, this experience was a learning opportunity for him. Overall, he exceeded expectations, but next season he’ll need to have a clearer handle on the playoff rotation. Trusting your players and helping build their confidence is absolutely key.
Again?! Dumb decisions in game, now at press conference too? Granted some are not in great shape to play a whole half that he wanted his players to play. But now to bring up conditioning when that was hung on Luka after the trade? That is one thing you don't talk publicly about! This is not his podcast where he can bring up topic that we get attention.
JJ asked him day one if he wanted him to coach him hard. Everyone knows his injuries limited him and capped where his conditioning would usually be. At the same time, his conditioning is an international story and part of why he is now a Laker. I don't think it's nearly as big a deal as Nico or the national media seem to think it is, but it's a thing. I'm sure he'd rather JJ be up front with the asks and expectations rather than lie to his face and us move him in the middle of the night because behind closed doors we think he's fat. Also I think it's a lot about Austin. Every year he's a year away from where we need his conditioning to be based on that current role. He puts in the work, he'll get there. But it's been a thing since we signed him. I didn't think so. He's very up front and clear with the players on what he's doing and why. If he doesn't plan on playing him, I like that he's telling it to him straight up.
We have to be self critical if we want to improve. Luka needs to slim down and improve his conditioning, Reaves needs to bulk up and improve his conditioning.
