yeah, watching the press fawn all over the butler trade (they didn't even give up kuminga!!) has been pretty hilarious.

the fact that nico called rob has discounted what is likely among the greatest trades made in nba history. nico also called milwaukee, i believe. maybe others. we also didn't move reaves, one of our firsts, knecht, either swap, some of our seconds, etc. if you had asked me ahead of time, i'd think all of that would be gone! instead, we had enough left over to get an interesting young talent at a position of need.

but of course, michael pina leads his "winners/losers" article with jimmy butler and gs being big winners. like...i get that you love to zag and all (you have to in order to continue being a clippers homer), but any trade deadline article that leads with anything other than luka for AD is not serious.

To be fair, Rob had Luka fall in his lap. But then he did a good job securing Luka for a great price. Milwaukee may have botched it, or they may have made the right decision for them. If I were Mil GM, I might make the same decision, due to unsureness about being able to re-sign him vs greater chance of keeping Giannis, closer ages, perceived value, etc.

everyone's idol danny ainge had kevin garnett fall in his lap.

rob could have made one of the many panic trades people wanted and been unable to receive the luka call.

I said it like 5 times here while the pitchforks were out from all the mind readers since last summer up until the day of the Luka trade …. EVEN after DLO and Max II for DFS and Shake ….. that Rob was not going to do what was needed …. that it was exactly like 2 years ago for the same period of time all the negative stuff said as fact about what he wasn’t getting done about getting Westbrook out of here. Wait and see what he does or doesn’t do this deadline instead of all the intense negativity “assuming” the worst. But I was wrong, especially since we find out that the Luka trade was being negotiated and worked on for the Lakers compensation to Dallas for like 3 weeks and Rob’s saying Hold my Beer to what he did 2 years ago.

True. But it takes some luck to win sometimes you know.

So while it did fall in his lap I credit him for fleecing…sorry…further negotiating with Nico and not giving up both picks, Austin, etc. when most would have been okay throwing those additional assets in for Luka.

I’ll be honest and say I do still think we could’ve gotten back to the top building around AD, but the front office views Luka as their guy and I have no issues with that.

Williams may have been overpay (really depends on the back but multiple folks have said it should be okay) but it fills a clear position of need so I won’t quibble over that either.

Overall, everyone should be happy. The team has a clear direction with talented young players which is what everyone wanted.

    What are the odds.

Based on Rob's face this is when he had to pick his jaw off the floor

Can’t believe Rob found a way to trade our injury riddled center for a sharpshooting rookie plus an unprotected first and pick swap! And all this AFTER the trade deadline? Elite GM’ing for sure!

    :D

I never understand how these conversations can happen in public. Like, there's a zillion possibilities someone overhears or a lot of people that will recognize them and may try to listen.
It's like in TV shows when CIA or other agents talk about confidential stuff strolling in a park. I can't fathom that such thing happens

Ah, I'm pretty sure this is a post-meeting coffee break and they're probably talking life stuff and not the deal, of course.
But many times you see it happening, the other day was at a restaurant

...really should be a restraining order on Rob limiting his access to Nico after what he did to that franchise. Probably tough to get since they initiated things but still.

With that photo, you would be thinking the Lakers and Mavs were discussing a trade for Lively or Gafford. No one would have expected a trade for Luka.

I still remember seeing that notification. You just couldn't believe it. The KD to Warriors one was surprising as well but you kinda expected that it was down to only a few teams that could realistically get him because the OKC were still a top team at that time. Where else would KD go?

But the Luka one was out of nowhere. It will be a long time before we get something that surpasses that. It'd have to be Wemby coming to the Lakers :LLLLLebronlaughing:

My first awareness was coming into Lakers Discussion here on LB and seeing the "Luka Doncic Discussion" thread. Holy what in the f*** f*** ?? I knew nobody would be jerking around with a joke like that. Next flash to my non comprending brain after first awareness AD was traded ..... that's incredible but who ALL ELSE and how many picks did we have to trade for him. Knew AR had to be in there right? And Rui. And ALL the picks for next 10 years.

    BUT NO!!!
